We experimentally investigate the high-Reynolds flow around a rectangular cylinder of aspect ratio 5:1. This configuration is the object of the international BARC benchmark. Wind tunnel tests have been carried out for the flow at zero angle of attack and a Reynolds number, based on the crossflow cylinder length and on the freestream velocity, equal, to 40 000. Velocity measurements are obtained by using hot-wire anemometry along 50 different cross-flow traverses on the cylinder side and in the near wake. Differential pressure measurements are acquired on multiple streamwise sections of the model. The obtained measurements are in a good agreement with the state-of-the-art experiments. For the first time among the several contributions to the BARC benchmark, detailed flow measurements are acquired in the region near the cylinder side and in the near-wake flow. The edges and the thickness of the shear layers detaching from the upstream edges are derived from velocity measurements. Furthermore, we compute the flow frequencies characterizing the roll-up of the shear layers, the evolution of vortical structures near the cylinder side and the vortex shedding in the wake.
The goal of the research is to evaluate the open source code of OpenFOAM for the use of nuclear plant flow simulation objectively. Of the various incompressible flow solvers, simpleFoam, pimpelFoam are then tested under three validated cases (backward facing step, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow). For the evaluation of steady state incompressible laminar flow simulation, low reynolds number of backward facing step flow was solved by simpleFoam. The resultant of the reattached lengths turned out to be similar with the other experimental and simulation results. For transient flow simulation, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow were solved by pimpleFoam. The simulation accuracy was evaluated by comparing the resultant flow patterns with the description of the characteristics of the flow over the circular cylinder. The quantitative accuracy was evaluated for no more than 85% by comparing it to the decaying constants of the turbulent round jet velocity.

For decades, researchers have rigorously studied the characteristics of flow traveling around blunt objects in order to gain greater understanding of the flow around aircraft, vehicles or vessels. Many different types of flow exist, such as boundary layer flow, flow separation, laminar and turbulent flow, vortex and vortex shedding; such types are especially observed around circular cylinders. Vortex shedding around a circular cylinder exhibits a two-dimensional flow structure possessing a Reynolds number within the range of 47 and 180. As the Reynolds number increases, the Karman vortex changes into a three-dimensional flow structure. In this paper, a numerical analysis was performed examining the flow and aero-acoustic field characteristics around a circular cylinder using an optimized high-order compact scheme, which is a high order scheme. The analysis was conducted with a Reynolds number ranging between 300 and 1,000, which belongs to B-mode flow around a circular cylinder. For a B-mode Reynolds number, a proper spanwise length is analyzed in order to obtain the characteristics of three-dimensional flow. The numerical results of the Strouhal number as well as the lift and drag coefficients according to Reynolds numbers are coincident with the other experimental results. Basic research has been conducted studying the effects an unstable three-dimensional wake flow on an aero-acoustic field.
In this study, visualization of in-cylinder spray behavior and spark channel stretching by air flow characteristics depending on engine operating conditions were investigated. For in-cylinder spray behavior, increase in engine rpm did not alter the counter-clockwise air flow direction and location of in-cylinder dominant air flow but increased average air flow velocity, which hindered spray propagation parallel to the piston surface. When injection timing was retarded, direction of in-cylinder dominant air flow was changed, and average air flow velocity was reduced resulting in an increase in spray penetration length and change in direction. For spark channel stretching, increase in air flow speed did not affect spark channel stretch direction but affected length due to increase in spark channel resistance and limitation of energy ignition coil can handle. Change in air flow direction affected spark channel stretch direction where the air flow was obstructed by ground electrode which caused spark channel direction to occur in the opposing direction of air flow. It also affected spark channel stretch length due to change in air flow speed around the spark plug electrode from the interaction between the air flow and ground electrode.
The offects of a small control rod (d=3mm) located near a main circular cylinder on the drag reduction and wake structure modification were investigated. The location of the small control rod mounted on a rod-like spring is self-adjusting according to the wake structure far optimal control of the flow around the main cylinder. The experiments were carried out at the Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter (D=50mm) in the range $Re_{D}=1{\times}10^4{\~}6{\times}10^4$. Mean velocity and turbulent statistics were measured with varying the angle along the cylinder circumference ${\Theta}=15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$ and the distance between the main and control rods L =0.7, 1. Compared with the bare cylinder, the main circular cylinder with the fixed and self-adjusting rods reduced drag coefficient by $10{\%}$ at the angle of ${\Theta}=45^{\circ}$. For the main cylinder with self-adjusting rot as the Reynolds numbers increase, the streamwise mean velocity is increased, however, the turbulence intensity is decreased. In addition, the control rods tested in this study are effective at higher Reynolds number than at lower Reynolds number.

A two-dimensional circular cylinder freely falling in a channel has been simulated by using immersed boundary - lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) in order to analyze the characteristics of motion originated by the interaction between the fluid flow and the cylinder. The wide range of the solid/fluid density ratio has been considered to identify the effect of the solid/fluid density ratio on the motion characteristics such as the falling time, the transverse force and the trajectory in the streamwise and transverse directions. In addition, the effect of the gap between the cylinder and the wall on the motion of a two-dimensional freely falling circular cylinder has been revealed by taking into account a various range of the gap size. As the cylinder is close to the wall at the initial dropping position, vortex shedding in the wake occurs early since the shear flow formed in the spacing between the cylinder and the wall drives flow instabilities from the initial stage of freely falling. In order to consider the characteristics of transverse motion of the cylinder in the initial stage of freely falling, quantitative information about the cylinder motion variables such as the transverse force, trajectory and settling time has been investigate.

Many turbulence models have been developed in order to analyze the flow characteristics in an engine cylinder. Watkins introduced k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for in-cylinder flow, and Reynolds modified turbulence dissipation rate by applying rapid transformation theory, Wu suggested k-${\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model in which length scale and time scale are separated to introduce turbulence time scale, and Orszag proposed k-${\varepsilon}$ RNG model. This study applied the models to in-cylinder flow induced by intake valve and piston moving. All models showed similar flow fields during early stage of intake stroke. At the end of compression stroke, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ Watkins, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ Reynolds and ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ RNG predicted well second and third vortex, especially ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ RNG produced new forth vortex near central axis at the lower part of cylinder which was not predicted by the other models.
In this paper, we present two successful results from active controls of flows over a circular cylinder and a sphere for drag reduction. The Reynolds number range considered for the flow over a circular cylinder is 40-3900 based on the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter, whereas for the flow over a sphere it is $10^{5}$ based on the free-stream velocity and sphere diameter. The successful active control methods are a distributed (spatially periodic) forcing and a high-frequency (time periodic) forcing. With these control methods, the mean drag and lift fluctuations decrease and vortical structures are significantly modified. For example, the time-periodic forcing at a high frequency (larger than 20 times the vortex shedding frequency) produces $50{\%}$ drag reduction for the flow over a sphere at $Re=10^{5}$. The distributed forcing applied to the flow over a circular cylinder results in a significant drag reduction at all the Reynolds numbers investigated.

The present study numerically investigates three-dimensional laminar flow past a rotating circular cylinder placed in a uniform stream. For the purpose of a careful analysis of the modification of flow by the effect of the rotation on the flow, numerical simulations are performed at a various range of rotational coefficients ($0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}2.5$) at one Reynolds number of 300. As ${\alpha}$ increases, flow becomes stabilized and finally a steady state beyond the critical rotational coefficient. The 3D (three dimensional) wake mode of the stationary cylinder defined at this Reynolds number has been disorganized according to ${\alpha}$, which were observed by the visualization of 3D vortical structures. The variation of the Strouhal number is very weak when the wake pattern is changed according to the rotational coefficient. As ${\alpha}$ increases, the lift increases, whereas the drag decreases.

Gas flow field within the cylinder which is called a tumble flow is important factor in improving lean combustion stability. In this study, steady state flow tests were performed to quantify tumble ratio of flowfields generated by a tumble intensifying valve(TIV). In addition, velocity and fluctuation profiles in an intake port and flowfields in th cylinder were inspected using a hotwire anemometer and a laser light sheet method with various TIV configurations. These experimental results show that installated TIV has a great effect on flow field distribution in an intake port and test effects enhance a tumble flow in the cylinder.
