  • In this study, a new methodology for the assessment of liquefaction potential is proposed. Since there is no data on the liquefaction damage in Korea, the dynamic behavior of fully saturated soils is characterized through laboratory dynamic tests. There are two experimental parameters related to the soil liquefaction resistance characteristics : the one is the index of disturbance determined by $G/G_{max}$ curve and the other is a plastic shear strain trajectory evaluated from stress-strain curve. The proposed methodology takes advantage of the site response analysis based on real earthquake records to determine the driving effect of earthquake. In the evaluation of liquefaction resistance characteristics, it is verified experimentally that the magnitude of cyclic shear stress has no influence on the critical value of plastic shear strain trajectory at which the initial liquefaction occurs. Cyclic triaxial tests under the conditions of various cyclic stress ratios and torsional shear tests are carried out far the purpose of verification. Through this study, the critical value at the initial liquefaction is found unique regardless of the cyclic stress ratio. It is also f3und that liquefaction resistance curve drawn with disturbance and plastic shear strain trajectory can simulate the behavior of fully saturated soils under dynamic loads.

  • Fatigue life of a notched shaft was evaluated in order to estimate the durability and integrity of the notched shaft in design stage. Cumulative fatigue dama- ge analysis was performed using local strain approach based on the assumption that the fatigue life of a notched component is approximately same as that of a smooth specimen is subjected to the same strain at the notched component. In this paper, shafts with different notch root radius of 1, 2㎜ resulting in different values of stress concentration factors were tested under||rotating bending fatigue loading condition. Theoretical stress concentration factor for each notch type was calculated using finite element method. Fatigue life prediction program, FALIPS, written in C language was developed using the strain-life curve, and the local strain approach integrating Neuber's rule, cyclic stress-strain, and hysteresis loop equations. The fatigue life evaluated using the fatigue notch factor obtained from the experimentally determined fatigue strength showed very large scattering with nonconservatism, but the fatigue notch factors derived from the stress concentration factors and Peterson's equation reduced the considerablely accurate fatigue life evaluation within a factor of three.

  • A new model for describing the behavior of clay under monotonic and cyclic loading is proposed. This model uses the hyperbolic representation for the stress -strain relationship in overconsolidated state and it describes undrained effective stress path on the basis of the critical state theory. The developed constitutive model by using an energy dissipation equation can describe the behavior of clay in heavily overconsolidated state as u.ell as lightly overconsolidated state under monotonic loading. In order to extend the model for the behavior of clay under cyclic loading, a shift function of undrained stress spacing ratio is introduced in the constitutive model developed for monotonlc loading. A single additional parameter is required to represent the cyclic effect and it can be reasonably deter mined from the test results. The measured behavior in undrained cyclic triaxial tests has been easily and precisely predicted by the newly developed constitutive model.

  • Many household appliances, including vacuum cleaners, are being subjected to various of impact damages, and made of plastic. However, researches on the damage of appliances materials by repetitive impacts have been rarely conducted. the mechanical stress exerted upon impact-modified polycarbonate (PC) has a great influence not only on the quality of the product but also on the life span. The purpose of this research was to quantify the effects of repetitive impact on the polycarbonate. Second, it was to design the repetitive impact tester for controlling the impact energy. The mechanical properties of tensile strength, yielding stress and strain on the specimens subjected to cyclic impacts were discussed. Tensile strength was sharply declined at the beginning of the impact cycles, while the strain gradually decreased during impact cycles.

  • To clarify the structure development of cyclic olefin copolymers in stretching and relaxation processes, on-line measurements of optical retardation and tensile force were performed. Birefringence increased continuously whereas stress showed yielding at stretching temperatures of $160^{\circ}C$. At $170^{\circ}C$, stress yielding was not observed and stress and birefringence increased monotonously with an increase in the strain. In the relaxation process, stress and birefringence decreased monotonously at all the temperatures examined. The slope for the stress vs. birefringence relation at initial stage of stretching increased with an increase in temperature, whereas that for the relaxation stage was significantly larger that for the stretching process, and therefore showed a significant hysteresis.

  • Tensile and low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests on prior cold worked 316L stainless steel were carried out at various temperatures from room temperature to 650$^{\circ}C$. At all test temperatures, cold worked material showed the tendency of higher strength and lower ductility compared with those of solution treated material. The embrittlement of material occurred in the temperature region from 300$^{\circ}C$ to 600$^{\circ}C$ due to dynamic strain aging. Following initial cyclic hardening for a few cycles, cycling softening was observed to dominate until failure occurred during LCF deformation, and the cyclic softening behavior strongly depended on temperature and strain amplitude. Non-Masing behavior was observed at all test temperatures and hysteresis energy curve method was employed to describe the stress-strain hysteresis loops at half$.$life. The prediction shows a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Ratcheting behavior of IN 718 was investigated at $649^{\circ}C$ under various proportional and non-proportional loading conditions with stress control. The material response was initially elastic but substantial plastic strain was developed as the material softened cyclically. Ratcheting strain was measured to near fatigue life, and is found to have three stages of development - primary, secondary (steady-state) and tertiary. The secondary stage dominates for most cases. Under the same equivalent stress amplitude and mean stress, it was revealed that circular path loading gives higher ratcheting rates and shorter lives than linear paths and that the more ratcheting occurs when the cyclic load is in the same direction as the mean stress. The ratcheting strain at failure depends not only on its rate but also on fatigue life itself, and it is not a primary life-determining factor.

  • This paper describes an extension of a numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subject to monotonic in-plane shear. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. In addition, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect are used. Modifications of the stress-strain relation of concrete and steel are also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively.

  • This study presents cyclic stress-strain and tensile test results at room temperature (RT) and 316℃ using cold-worked TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals. By comparing the cyclic hardening/softening behavior and failure cycle of cold-worked materials with those of irradiated austenitic stainless steels, the feasibility of simulating the irradiation effect on cyclic deformation and failure behaviors of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals was investigated. It was found that, in the absence of strain-induced martensite trasformation, cold-working could properly simulate the change in cyclic hardening/softening behavior of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals due to neutron irradiation. It was also recognized that cold-working could adequately simulate the reduction in failure cycles of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals due to neutron irradition in the low-cycle fatigue region.

  • PBX simulant is known to exhibit highly nonlinear behaviors of deformation such as the stress softening, hysteresis under cyclic loading, residual strain after unloading, and aging. This paper proposes a new pseudo-elastic model for PBX simulant considering stress softening and residual strain. Uniaxial loading and unloading tests at quasi-static states were carried out in order to obtain the mechanical properties of the PBX simulants. And then the Dorfmann-Ogden model is modified to make it consistent with the test result of PBX simulants. Prediction with the new model shows a good correspondence to the experimental data demonstrating that the model properly describes stress softening and residual strain of PBX simulants.
