In milling, cutting tool ins directly attached to spindle and this tells that spindle can provide very useful information on the cutting tool condition such as wear or breakage. Since spindle is rotating at a high speed, measuring spindle velocity using a noncontacting measurement system gives the best information which can be obtained. Due to the force applied to spindle through cutting tool, velocity of spindle changes. And any change in cutting tool condition affects cutting force and consequently spindle vibration. With the intent of continuously monitoring cutting tool condition in intermittent machining operations in a benign manner, a noncontacting velocity measurement system using a laser Doppler velocimeter was assembled to measure spindle torsional vibration. Spindle vibration was measured and analysis of it in the frequency domain yielded a measure which corresponded to amount of cutting tool wear in milling.

The optimum cutting condition of rake angle in turning was investigated in SM45C and SM20C. Results of experiments in SM45C and SM20C are as follow. Specific cutting resistance became higher as the depth of cutting, feed or cutting velocity decreases at same rake angle and resistance became low value at 20.deg.(SM45C), 10.deg.(SM20C). The optimum cutting condition for SM45C is depth of cutting 0.7mm, rake angle 30.deg., cutting velocity 200mm/min, feed 0.1mm/rev, and for SM20C is depth of cut 0.5mm, rake angle 10.deg., cutting velocity 150mm/min, feed 0.1mm/rev.The rake angle for good roughness is 15.deg for SM45C, and that for SM20C is 25.deg. The roughness is influenced by feed and it has the lowest value at 0.1mm/rev and the cutting condition is closely related with the change of cutting velocity and feed.

High Speed Machining(HSM) reduces machining time and improves surface accuracy because of the high cutting speed and feedrate. Development of HSM makes it allowable to machine difficult-to-cut material and use small-size-endmill. It is however limited to cutting condition and tool material. In the machining operation, it is important to check main parameter of tool life and select optimal cutting condition because tool breakage can interrupt progression of operation. In this study, cutting parameters are determined to 3 factors and 3 levels which are a spindle speed, a feedrate and a width of cut. Experiment is designed to orthogonal array table for L9 with 3 outer array using Taguchi method. Also, it is proposed to inspect significance of the optimal factors and levels by ANOVA using average of SN ratio for tool life. Finally, estimated value of SN ratio in the optimal cutting condition is compared with measured one in the floor shop and reduction of loss is predicted.

The curved surface machined by plate end mill causes a excess non-cutting volume, in these cases ball end mill is used for the curved surfaces. This study is aimed to obtain the optimum cutting conditions of various cutting speed, table speed, tool diameter, radius of curvature roughness on the conditions of various cutting speed, tool diameter, radius of curvature when machining the curved surface using the ball end mill. After designing curve rates, obtaining NC data by CAD/CAM system through CC-Cartesian method and transferred the data through DNC system, we machined the specimens by the CNC machining center, The surface roughness of specimens was measured by surface roughness tester and CNC 3D coordinate measuring machine. The cutting condition were the same as follow velocity; 15, 20, 25 30m/min, feed rate;40, 60, 80, 100m/min and radius of curvature; 30,40,50,60mm, tool diameters; ø8, ø12, ø16, ø 20mm. Analizing the working results, we can acquire the optimum cutting condition of curved specimen at the cutting velocity of 20~25m/min and the feed rate of 80mm/min. As the same cutting condition the best surface roughness was showed at ø16mm of the tool diameter. But the tool diameter was smaller than ø8mm. we could improve for the surface roughness by controlling the cusp.
For economical and environmental reasons, the aim of this research is hence to monitor the cutting conditions with the dry cutting, the wet cutting, and the mist cutting to obtain the proper cutting condition for the plain carbon steel with the ball end milling based on the consideration of the surface roughness of the machined parts, the life of the cutting tools, the use of the cutting fluids, the density of the particles of cutting fluids dispersed in the working area, and the cost of cutting. The experimentally obtained results of the relation between tool wear and surface roughness, the relation between tool wear and cutting force, and the relation between cutting force and surface roughness are correspondent with the same trend. The phenomena of surface roughness and tool wear can be explained by the in-process cutting forces. The models of the tool wear with the cutting conditions and the cutting times are proposed to estimate the tool cost for the different cooling strategies based on the experimental data using the multiple regression technique. The cutting cost is calculated from the costs of cutting tool and cutting fluid. The mist cutting gives the lowest cutting cost as compared to others. The experimentally obtained proper cutting condition is determined based on the experimental results referring to the criteria.

In modern industry, the machining process is very important for manufacturing various products. More than 80% of machining processes apply rough cutting. The target of this study is to establish the optimal condition of rough cutting using trochoidal motion for improving productivity. For research, the range of cutting conditions is defined by trochoidal motion. The cutting time and tolerance are measured and evaluated according to the cutting conditions of machining. Experimental data are utilized for comparing trochoidal motion and contouring. It is found that the cutting time of trochoidal motion is two times less than that of contouring with optimal cutting conditions. To conclude, trochoidal motion for rough cutting under appropriate cutting conditions improves productivity and shortens processing time significantly.
The effects of cutting condition and tempering temperature for the shape of cutting chip were investigated. For this purpose, a lead-free brass containing 1wt.% of Bi extruded at $750^{\circ}C$ in straight turning was used in this study. The cutting chip preferred was mainly found to be loose form of arc chips with curling discontinuity, and these were formed by shear fracture. However, some of fragmental element chip were found to be mixed when tempering temperature was as high as $500^{\circ}C$. The form and size of chip was more affected by feed rate than by tempering temperature and cutting rate. In addition, the cutting surface was observed to be formed more rough in the case of high feed rate and low cutting rate compared to low feed rate and high cutting rate.

The optimum cutting condition for rake angle in turning was investigated in (6-4) Brass and Al alloy. Results of experiments in (6-4) Brass and Al alloy are as follow. Specific cutting resistance becames higher as the depth of cutting, feed or cutting velocity decreases at same rake angle and resistance appear low value 20.deg., 25.deg.(6-4)brass, 0.deg. 20.deg.(Al alloy). The optimum cutting condition for(6-4) Brass is depth of cutting 0.5mm, rake angle 25.deg., cutting velocity 80m/min, feed 0.1mm/rev and for Al alloy is depth of cutting 0.1mm, rake angle 0.deg., cutting velocity 200m/min, feed 0.5mm/rev. The rake angle for good roughness is 20.deg. at (6-4) Brass, and that for Al alloy is 15.deg. The roughness is influenced by feed and it has the lowest value at 0.1mm/rev and the cutting condition is influenced by rake angle only.

Cutting force is important to understand cutting process in milling. To measure cutting force, tool dynamometer is widely used but it is hard to apply in workshop condition. Cutting force measurement which doesn't affect cutting process is needed. Using relations between cutting force and spindle displacement, cutting force can be predicted. Cylindrical capacitive sensor was used to measure spindle displacement during cutting. And signals from tool dynamometer collected to compare with spindle displacement. The result shows spindle displacement has a linear relation with cutting force. Using this result, a simple method to predict cutting force could be applied at workshop condition.

This paper presents the characteristics of surface roughness and cutting force in ultraprecision cutting of aluminium alloy using natural diamond tools whose edge radii are smaller than those of tools made of other materials. The feed rate and depth of engagement were set to be a micrometer order. After measuring the surface roughness of machined surface and cutting force for each cutting condition, the relations between the surface quality and its condition were investigated qualitatively. If the feed rate was under a certain limit, the machined surface quality was deteriorated unexpectedly. This is supposed to have happened due to vibration leading its condition to abnormal one. In a certain situation the machined surface roughness by a natural diamond tool was inferior to that made by a carbide tool whose cutting edge radius is larger. This is supposed to be caused by not normal machining but burnishing effect.
