  • An elastic model is developed to predict the average thermal residual stresses in the matrix and fiber of a misoriented short fiber composite. The thermal residual stresses are induced by the mismatch in the coefficient of the thermal expansion of the matrix and fiber when the composite is subjected to a uniform temperature change. The model considers two special cases of fiber misorientation ; two-dimensional in-plane and three-dimensional axisymmetric. The analytical formulation of the model is based on Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and is nuque in that it is able to account for interactions among fibers. The model is more general than past models and it is able to treat prior analyses of the simpler composite systems as extram cases. The present model is to investigate the effects of fiber volume fraction, distribution type, distribution cut-off angle, and aspect ratio on thermal residual stress for both in-plane and axisymmetric fiber misorientation. Fiber volum fraction, aspect ratio, and disturbution cut-off angle are shown to have more significant effects on the magnitude of the thermal residual stress than fiber distrubution type for both in-plane and axisymmetric misorientation.

An Experimental Study on Performance and Flow Characteristics of Automotive Sirocco Fan (자동차용 시로코팬의 성능 및 유동특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • For the optimal design of an automotive blower system, effects of the scroll cut-off starting angle, the clearance between blade tip and bellmouth, and the scroll expansion angle on the performance of sirocco fan are investigated experimentally. Best performance is achieved at fan exposure ratio $\Deltae/r_c$,/TEX> =1.0, and clearance ratio $\DeltaeC/C=0.62. Flow characteristics inside sirocco fan are also studied by using LDV. Flow patterns in the inside of fan can be classified into three regions. Velocity vector has the same direction as rotational direction of fan at 0~$120^{\circ}$, toward the fan blades at 150~$180^{\circ}$, and opposite direction at 210~$330^{\circ}$. Turbulent intensity is relatively high near the cut-off edge in the scroll housing.

Results of Minimal Incision Distal Metatarsal Osteotomy for Moderate to Severe Hallux Valgus (중등도 이상의 무지 외반증에서 최소 절개를 이용한 원위 중족골 절골술의 결과)

  • Purpose: Minimal incision distal metatarsal osteotomy (MIDMO) is known to be an effective surgical procedure for mild to moderate hallux valgus. However, the result of MIDMO on moderate to severe hallux valgus is controversial; therefore, we investigated the radiological and clinical results of MIDMO on moderate to severe hallux valgus. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 51 feet (48 patients) with moderate to severe hallux valgus. The mean age was 67.0 years and the mean follow-up period was 32.2 months. Radiological data of hallux valgus angle, first intermetatarsal angle, and distal metatarsal articular angle on plain radiographs were analyzed. Recurrence, union, lateral translation of distal fragment and angulation were also analyzed. The clinical data were obtained using American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score of preoperation and last follow-up. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine a cut-off value. Results: The mean hallux valgus angle measured at preoperation was $37.7^{\circ}$ and $15.9^{\circ}$ at last follow-up. The mean first intermetatarsal angle of preoperation and last follow-up were $15.2^{\circ}$ and $8.3^{\circ}$. The mean distal metatarsal articular angle changed from $12.6^{\circ}$ at preoperation to $7.8^{\circ}$ at last follow-up. Preoperative hallux valgus angle (p=0.0051) and distal metatarsal articular angle (p=0.0078) were statistically significant factors affecting postoperative AOFAS score. Cut-off value of each was $37^{\circ}$ and 13o, respectively. Lateral translation of distal fragment in 5 recurrent cases was 23.0% compared to 45.3% of 46 non-recurrent cases. The result was statistically significant and the cut-off value was 38%. Conclusion: Sufficient lateral translation over 38% in MIDMO on moderate to severe hallux valgus patients with preoperative hallux valgus angle under $37^{\circ}$ and distal metatarsal articular angle under $13^{\circ}$ can lead to good clinical results without recurrence.

  • In this paper, the reduction of the figure of merit depending on the increased spill-over when the parabolic reflector is cut off partially for low-profile configuration in the satellite broadcast receiving antenna is analyzed. Also for the accurate analysis and simulation, it is considered that the noise temperature is increased due to the effect of ground thermal noise toword the sidelobes and back lobes when the antenna is tracked from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ in elevation angle, and that the total noise temperature is increased because to the noise figure of LNA. As the results, noise temperature is increased up to about 15K and G/T ratio is decreased to about 2.5dB, when the reflector is cut 35% off partially.

  • In this paper, a method to implement new Quasi-SOI LDMOSFET is introduced and the electrical characteristics of the device are studied. Key process steps of the device are explained briefly. By performing process and device simulations, electrical characteristics of the device are investigated, with emphasis on the optimization of the tilt angle of p$\^$0/ channel region. The electrical properties of the Quasi-SOI device are compared with those of bulk and SOI devices with the same process parameters. Simulated device characteristics are threshold voltage, off-state leakage current, subthreshold swing, DIBL, output resistance, lattice temperature, I$\_$D/-V$\_$Ds/, and cut-off frequency.

  • In this paper, the design procedure of a guidance algorithm in the boosting phase of missiles with free-flight after thrust cut-off is introduced. The purpose of the guidance is to achieve a required velocity vector at the thrust cut-off. Trajectory optimizations for four cost functions are performed to investigate implementable trajectories in the pitch plane. It is observed from the optimization results that high angle of attack maneuver in the beginning of the flight are required to satisfy the constraints. The proposed guidance algorithm consists of the pitch program to produce open-loop pitch attitude command and the yaw attitude command generator to nullify the velocity to go. The pitch program utilizes the pitch attitude histories obtained from the trajectory optimization.

  • Recently the first author and his coworker report a new finite element method for the Poisson equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on a polygonal domain with one re-entrant angle [7], They use the well-known fact that the solution of such problem has a singular representation, deduced a well-posed new variational problem for a regular part of solution and an extraction formula for the so-called stress intensity factor using tow cut-off functions. They use Fredholm alternative an Garding's inequality to establish the well-posedness of the variational problem and finite element approximation, so there is a maximum bound for mesh h theoretically. although the numerical experiments shows the convergence for every reasonable h with reasonable size y imposing a restriction to the support of the extra cut-off function without using Garding's inequality. We also give error analysis with similar results.

  • Although discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composite(MMC) is one of the most promising materials for applications of aerospace, automotive industries, the thermal residual stresses developed in the MMC due to the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion between the matrix and the fiber under a temperature change has been pointed out as one of the serious problem in practical applications. There are very limited nondestructive techniques to measure the residual stress of composite materials. However, many difficulties have been reported in their applications. Therefore it is important to establish analytical model to evaluate the thermal residual stress of MMC for practical engineering application.   • The enhanced phase angle estimation algorithm is essential to supply the power stably under synchronizing with grid source. In this paper, we are proposed the novel phase angle estimation algorithm and verified the validity of proposed method as simulation with PSIM and experiments. We sort the harmonics element using high-pass filter(HPF) that have the cut-off frequency below basic element and make reverse d-q transformation. So, it can be restored the harmonics element at stationary axis, and we can get the fundamental voltage element of AC grid. Proposed PLL method have a rapid responsibility and a large margin at controller design than conventional method because it have a small phase delay and a sufficient controller gain margin. And, it can reduce the error of voltage rms value and axis transformation according to robust PLL algorithm against the harmonic and phase unbalance.

A Study on the Fan and Scroll for Ventilation (배기용 Fan Scroll에 대한 연구)

  • In the Over-The-Range, the outlet size is limited by the industrial standards. Therefor to enlarge the volume of cavity, the installation height of ventilation fan is become small, the system resistance is higher than before. For that reason, the important design variables such as the diameter of a fan, the scroll expansion angle, etc. which play the significant role on flow rate and noise, are confined. In this study, we made an experiment of the diameter of fans relation to scroll expansion angle and investigated flow rate of the length of fans in enlarged cavity volume of OTR, and then we designed the new scroll to improve the flow rate and noise level. As a result, flow rate increased to 110% compared to current scroll and the blade passing frequency of a fan is disappeared by inclined cut-off shapes.
