낙하충격해석을 통한 대형 전자제품의 완충포장재 최적설계 (Optimal Design for Cushioning Package of a Heavy Electronic Product Using Mechanical Drop Analysis)

  • Generally, heavy electronic products undergo many different types of shocks in transportation from a manufacturer to customers. Cushioning package is used to protect electronic products from severe shock environments. Since the mass distribution of heavy electronic products is usually unbalanced and complex. it is very difficult to design a cushioning package with having high performance by considering only the equivalent stiffness of that. Therefore, when designing the cushioning package for a heavy electronic product, it is necessary to optimize its shape in order to maximize the cushioning performance. In this study, it is focused on designing an optimal shape of cushioning package for a large refrigerator and an efficient design method is suggested by using a dynamic finite element analysis. As the results of this study the optimal shape of cushioning package, which has high cushioning performance and minimized volume, was obtained through the mechanical drop analysis and a optimization process. Through free drop tests of refrigerators, it was identified that the cushioning performance of the cushioning package was improved up by 25% and the its own volume was reduced by 22 %.

Since the mass distributions of heavy electronic products are usually unbalanced and complex, it is very difficult to design a cushioning package with haying high performance by considering only the equivalent stiffness of that. Therefore, when designing the cushioning material for a heavy electronic product, it is necessary to optimize its shape in order to maximize the cushioning performance. In this study, it is focused on designing an optimal shape of cushioning material for a large-sized refrigerator and an efficient design method is suggested by using a dynamic finite element analysis. As the results of this study, the optimal shape of cushioning material, which has high cushioning performance and minimized volume, was obtained from the drop analysis and a optimization process. From free drop tests of a refrigerator, it was identified that the cushioning performance of the optimal package were improved up to 16 % and the volume of it was reduced in a range of 22 %.

  • The monitor product is packed by cushioning materials because the monitor can be broken during transportation. However, the addition of the cushioning material increased the volume of the product. Therefore, it is required that the usage of cushioning material be minimized. In practice, design engineers have followed the ad hoc design with experiences of predecessors. Automation of the design process is very important for the reduction of engineering cost, and can be achieved by an excellent design process and software development. According to Axiomatic design, a design flow is defined and a software system is developed for automated design. At first, a basic model is defined. A user can modify the model from menus and design is carried out according to the input from the user. Finite element models are automatically generated based on the design. A nonlinear finite element analysis program called LS/DYNA3D is linked for the impact analysis. The process of Design of Experiments using orthogonal array is installed to minimize the maximum acceleration in drop test. Therefore, a new design can be proposed by the system. The program is designed according to the Independence Axiom of Axiomatic design. FRs and DPs of the software system are defined and decomposed by zigzagging process. Independent modules can be generated by analysis of the full design matrix and each module is coded as class in Object Oriented Programming (OOP). Design results are discussed.

충격해석을 통한 결과의 예측 (The Prediction of the Results of Drop Test Through Shock Analysis)

  • Electronic products can be subjected to many different forms of shock. These shocks are usually experienced during transporting the electronic products from a manufacturer to customers. Drop tests are performed to test the product fragility before shipment. Package cushioning materials are often used to protect electronic products from severs shock environments. In the present paper, an algorithm to predict the shock responses of the main mechanical parts is developed by use of the shock analysis in which the modal parameters extracted from vibration test are used. These results are in good agreement with the results of drop test. By use of the shock response prediction algorithm developed herein, it is possible to predict the results of drop test at various drop directions and also to select the optimal package cushioning materials.

  • 본 실험에서는 청과물의 포장 완충재로 사용되고 있는 골판지의 압축 및 충격특성을 이용하여 완충곡선(peak acceleration - static stress curve)을 구현하기 위한 알고리즘을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서 알 수 있듯이 한 개의 동적계수로도 완충곡선을 구현할 수 있음을 알 수가 있었으며, 기존의 완충곡선의 구현시 정적응력 범위 내에서의 실험횟수를 현저하게 줄일 수 있음을 알 수가 있었다. 또한, 골판지 완충재료 외에 플라스틱 발포체 완충재료에도 적용이 가능할 것으로 판단되었다.

  • Electronic products are subjected to many different types of shock environment. As the Optical Disc Drive (ODD) market grows, the number of failures related to shock increases. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the performance of cushion package as well as the product design. Cushion materials such as expanded polystyrene are often used to protect electronic products from shock environment. In this paper, the drop analysis of the cushion package f3r optical disc drives was carried out with the explicit method of LS-DYNA and verified by the drop test. For the optimization of package, response surface approximation model was created using central composite design. As a result, cushioning performance was improved under the critical condition and practical design guidelines of cushion package were suggested.

금속 블록에 삽입된 감쇠층의 진동저감 성능 평가 (Evaluation of the Vibration Reduction Performance of a Cushioning Layer between Metal Blocks)

  • This study describes an evaluation of the vibration-level reduction effect of natural rubber inserted between two aluminum blocks, in which the modal parameters are predicted using two different damping systems. A numerical model with two degrees of freedom was established for both the cases. One was an eigenvalue problem analysis using a state space method and general viscous damping, whereas the other was a method using hysteretic damping. The modal parameters obtained from these two approaches were compared with those obtained from the finite element method using a commercial package. As a result, the natural frequencies observed in the complex frequency response curve were consistently less than the average of four percents. The damping ratios also showed good agreement within a reasonable range. However, the hysteretic damping system showed a relatively larger difference for all modal parameters. This suggests that the analysis procedure makes it easier to predict the vibration transmission characteristics of the shape and configuration of any cushioning layer.

  • 대형 드럼세탁기의 낙하 충격에 대한 포장재의 동적 거동 분석을 수행하였다. 해석에는 충격 해석에 널리 쓰이고 있는 LS-DYNA를 사용하였으며, 자유 낙하 시의 충격 가속도와 유효 응력, 그리고 고속 카메라를 통한 포장재 압축 변형 비교를 통해 해석 결과의 신뢰성을 검증하였다. 완충 특성 및 포장재 구조 에 대한 파라미터 분석을 통해 기존 포장 구조에 대한 설계 개선안을 도출하였으며, 유통 시험을 통해 유효성을 검증하였다. 본 연구에서 사용한 해석 기법 및 분석 방법 등을 통해, 향후 드럼 세탁기의 완충 성능 및 재료비 개선에 효과적으로 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
