  • Amidst the growing uncertainty in external environments, securing and retaining superior human resources is becoming emphasized as a key means for organizations to achieve competitive advantages. Particularly, star employees-human resources that are characterized by their ability to create extraordinary performance relative to other peers-are increasingly gaining attention in both academia and industry because of its importance in knowledge-based industries. However, despite the prevailing recognition for star employees, few previous literature have attempted to empirically test the direct relationship between the ratio of star employees in an organization and organizational performance. Considering both the potential for positive and negative influence of star employees on organizations, the relationship between the ratio of star employees and organizational performance can not only be a simple linear relationship but can also exist in a curvilinear form. Building on the existing literature on star employees, this paper establishes competing hypotheses for the two possibilities of curvilinear relationship; as the ratio of star employees increases, marginal effects can either increase (i.e., U-shaped curvilinear relationship) or decrease (i.e., inverted U-shaped curvilinear relationship). Employing an unbalanced panel data of 35 Korean brokerage firms between years 2008 and 2013 with 134 observations, the relationship between the ratio of best analysts (i.e. star employees) as selected by Maeil Business Newspaper and financial performance (i.e. organizational performance) of corresponding brokerage firms is examined. Empirical results indicate that while organizational performance increases as the ratio of star employees increases, its positive effect diminishes over time which provides support for the curvilinear relationship with decreasing marginal effects. Our research findings imply that star employees create value in knowledge-based industries; at the same time, implications are given as results calls for caution for excessive dependence on star employees beyond a certain level.

  • Firms have reexamined and restructured their supply chain based on a long-term and partnership perspective as a firm's competitive advantage increasingly relies on its supply chain capability. A number of scholar works has provided evidence to support the positive effects of supply chain collaboration; however, the relationship between collaboration and performance is still inconclusive. This study refuses to have blinded faith on supply chain collaboration, but rather this paper suggests that the contribution of collaboration to supply chain performance improvement can be limited and vary along the contextual characteristics of a buyer-supplier relationship. Moreover, we argue that the relationship between supply chain collaboration and performance can be curvilinear. This paper provides and test hypotheses regarding the relationship between supply chain collaboration and performance. By using data of the Manufacturing Panel Survey (MPS), this study empirically validates the hypotheses. Overall, the results of the study support our hypotheses about a limited contribution of supply chain collaboration to manufacturing performance, which is opposite to a conventional expectation. Particularly, the effects of supply chain collaboration differ depending on the dimensions of performance such as customer satisfaction, quality, cost, delivery, and flexibility as well as the dependency in the buyer-supplier relationship. Moreover, the results of the study indicate that supply chain collaboration and performance may have curvilinear relationships in a certain context. Through a comprehensive model and empirical evidence, this study presents a better understanding of supply chain collaboration and provokes an open discussion about the effects of collaboration. This study also provides insightful implications for managers of buyers as well as suppliers who wish to foster stronger supply chain performance via a deep buyer-supplier relationship and collaboration.

  • Purpose - The principle aim of this study is to further investigate the relationship between market diversity and export performance. We examine the benefits and costs of geographic market diversity regarding the number of countries exported to by firms on their export performance. Based on the financial risk reduction model and the entry costs model, we propose a way to incorporate the costs and benefits aspects of market diversity. Design/methodology - To empirically investigate our research question, the curvilinear relationship between market diversity and export performance, we built a secondary panel data set between 2015 and 2019, containing 17,863 observations of Korean exporting companies. A generalized least squares panel estimator with fixed effects was employed to test the hypothesis, and the statistical package, Stata 14, was used. Findings - Our main findings are as follows: As market diversity increases, export performance increases because exporters can diversify and reduce financial risks in export markets. However, the relationship between the two does not grow. As it peaks, the entry costs increase due to the high market diversity, thereby outweighing the benefits, leading, eventually to decrease in the export performance. Consequently, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between market diversity and export performance. Originality/value - In the export and trade literature, the impact of market diversity on export performance has not been addressed yet, despite the importance of this subject. Many scholars have assumed a positive linear relationship between the two, considering only the decrease in market risks as the number of overseas markets increases, without examining the increase in the entry and management costs. Therefore, our study contributes by providing a new perspective for analyzing the characteristics and outcomes of market diversity.

  • The vibration characteristics of post-buckled laminated composite doubly curved shells are investigated. The finite element method is used for the analysis of post-buckling and free vibration of post-buckled laminated shells. The geometric non-linear finite element model includes the general non-linear terms in the strain-displacement relationships. The shell geometry used in the present formulation is derived using an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Based on the principle of virtual work the non-linear finite element equations are derived. Arc-length method is implemented to capture the load-displacement equilibrium curve. The vibration characteristics of post-buckled shell are performed using tangent stiffness obtained from the converged deflection. The code is first validated and then employed to generate numerical results. Parametric studies are performed to analyze the snapping and vibration characteristics. The relationship between loads and fundamental frequencies and between loads and the corresponding displacements are determined for various parameters such as thickness ratio and shallowness.

  • This paper examined the U-shape curvilinear relationship between team level conflict management and individual level turnover intention by using exit-voice theory, bandwagon effect, and social loafing theory. In addition to the non-linear relationship between team-level conflict management and individual-level turnover intentions, we also examined how trust in leaders has a moderating effect on this relationship. The samples were collected from a South Korean manufacturing company with 331 team members from 48 teams and items were measured twice to avoid common method biases. The intercepts-as-outcomes model of hierarchical linear modelling was conducted to verify the hypothesis. Results supported the cross-level curvilinear hypothesis which indicated that employees' turnover intention sharply decreased if the activeness of group conflict management was small and increases slightly, but this tendency moderated as activeness increases. After passing the lowest point, their turnover intention increased in the end. However, the moderation effect of trust in leader on this relationship was not statistically significant and hypothesis 2 was rejected. This paper explained the effects of group dynamics of conflict management on individual turnover intention. Such evidence may elucidate the importance of managing the social loafing behavior on conflict management process. This paper examined the sequential, multi-level, and curvilinear relationship between conflict management and turnover intention. Organizations and managers will benefit from avoiding the human resource loss by managing the conflict management process.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore how overly positive self-estimations in peer relationships relate to subjective well-being and to the occurrence of interpersonal behaviors supporting basic psychological needs among elementary school students. This study tested the optimal margin hypothesis of positive illusion by examining the curvilinear relationship between these variables. The sample consisted of 346 fifth and sixth grade students. The self-criterion residual method was used to derive self-estimation bias scores by regressing the real peer relations index (i.e., In-degree) on their perceived peer relationship qualities. The results showed that girls more strongly overestimated the quality of their peer relationships than boys. Self-estimation biases had a positive curvilinear relationship with negative affects and a negative curvilinear relationship with relatedness needs supporting interpersonal behaviors. These results supported the existence of the optimal margin of positive illusion because overestimations of the quality of peer relationships were associated with lower levels of negative affects and relatedness needs-supporting interpersonal behaviors, though these benefits flattened out and no further benefit was observed after an optimal level of overestimation. However, self-estimation bias was linearly associated with positive affect, autonomy needs-supporting interpersonal behaviors, and competence needs-supporting interpersonal behaviors. These results indicated that optimal margin hypothesis was not supported for all outcome variables.

  • The relationship between the plasma haloperidol (HP) concentration and clinical response, and the effects of its active metabolite, reduced haloperidol (RH) on clinical response of HP were investigated in schizophrenic patients. In clinical study I, with 17 schizophrenic patients (male 8, fermale 9) who were administered with three different fixed doses of HP (15, 30 and 50 mg/day) for 3 weeks, the concentrations of HP and RH in plasma and blood and clinical response had been checked before and every week during the study. The clinical response was evaluated by the method of brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS), and relative improvement of clinical response based on baseline BPRS (before drug treatment) was calculated. The concentrations of HP and RH in plasma and blood were assayed by HPLC. In clinical study II, the plasma RH/HP concentration ratios were checked in 11 patients who were administered with high doses of HP, over 60 mg a day, because of the poor clinical response at usual doses of HP. Plasma HP concentration and relative improvement of BPRS at 3 week in schizophrenic patients showed a 'curvilinear' relationship, and the clinical response was improved relatively over 50% based on the baseline BPRS in the range of $5{\sim}57\;ng/ml $ of HP in plasma. Also, the plasma RH concentrations were increased nonlinearly as the plasma HP concentration increased, and in high plasma HP concentration, over 30 ng/mI, clinical response gradually decreased, while the plasma RH/HP concentration ratio increased nonlinearly. Blood partition coefficients of HP and RH were not changed according to daily HP dose and duration of drug therapy. From these results, it is noted that the higher plasma RH/HP concentration ratio, resulted from the accumulation of RH as HP concentration increased, might explain the 'curvilinear' decrease of HP clinical response.

  • Previous studies on the relationship between stress and performance have shown inconsistent results. Thus, this study focused on the effect of challenging stress among the two types of stress types and investigated the nonlinear relationship between the challenging stress and the performance. In particular, performance was divided into job performance, which is related to in-role behavior, and organizational citizenship behavior, which is characterized as extra-role behavior. Empirical results using 222 samples of Chinese workers have showed that challenging stress had a nonlinear relationship with job performance and organizational citizenship behavior. However, it was found that the shape of nonlinear relationship of the challenging stress on job performance and organizational citizenship behavior was slightly different. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of this paper and future research directions are discussed.

  • Serum thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) was measured with a radioimmunoassay (RIA) kit (GammaDab TBG). The TBG concentration in 23 adult normals was $23.7{\pm}1.9{\mu}g/ml(mean{\pm}SD)$. The serum TBG levels of $21.6{\pm}3.5{\mu}g/ml$) in hyperthyroidism, $24.7{\pm}4.9{\mu}g/ml$ in subacute thyroiditis, $20.7{\pm}7.0{\mu}g/ml$ in liver cirrhosis and $22.6{\pm}3.7{\mu}g/ml$ in sick patient were not significantly different from normals. The levels of $31.8{\pm}5.9{\mu}g/ml$ in hypothyroidism, $36.2{\pm}5.1{\mu}g/ml$ in pregnancy (p<0.01, p<0.001) and $29.3{\pm}6.1{\mu}g/ml$ in molar pregnancy (p<0.01) were significanty higher that in normals. In various cases without thyroid dieases (euthroid group), the TBG concentration correlated with the value for Amerlex $T_3$ (r=0.816) though there was curvilinear relationship. This relationship was altered in hyperthyroidism, subacute thyroiditis and molar pregnancy in which sera were overloaded with thyroxine $(T_4)$ so that concentration of unoccupied binding sites on TBG (free TBG concentration) were more decreased than expected from normal TBG concentrations. Hypothyroidism was also separated from the curvilinear relationship in euthyroid group indicating that free TBG concentrations were more increased relative to slightly increased TBG concentrations. Measurement of the TBG concentration was considered useful in the diagnosis of TBG defiency, in differentiating molar pregnancy from hyperthyroidism and for correct understanding the hormone binding in liver dieases and other nonthyroidal illness.
