  • The behaviors of acoustic emission emitted in the tests of the fracture toughness and fracture stability are observed by using the specimens of aluminum 2024-T351 and 7039-T6 alloys. The empirical eqution of J-R curve is derived. It is demonstrated from the comparison of the fracture toughness obtained from J-R curve with that from ASTM standard E813-81 that the latter is larger than the former. The discontinuous point in the log-log graph of J-integral vs. total acoustic emission count is observed in between the two offset lines referred from ASTM standard E813-81, but it's physical meaning is uncretain. An empirical material tearing modulus is derived in terms of the total acoustic emission count and proved to be valid in fracture instability test.

  • This study evaluates the seismic performance of a premodern six story reinforced concrete building typology designed during the communism period of Albania and build throughout the country. During the November 26, 2019 Earthquake in Albania, the most affected reinforced concrete buildings were among the old templates, lacking shear walls and inadequate reinforcement details which suffer from concrete aging. The mathematical model of the selected building is done in the environments of ZeusNL software, developed especially for earthquake engineering applications. The capacity curve of the structure is gained using the conventional static nonlinear analysis. On the other hand, the demand estimation is utilized using one of the recent methods known as Incremental Dynamic Analysis with a set of 18 ground motion records. The limit states in both curves are defined based on the modern guidelines. For the pushover, immediate occupancy (IO), life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP) are plotted in the same graph with capacity curve. Furthermore, on each IDA derived, the IO, CP and global instability (GI) are determined. Moreover, the IDA fractiles are generated as suggested by the literature, 16%, 50% (median) and 84%. In addition, the comparative assessment of the IDA median with capacity curve shows good correlation points. Lastly, this study shows the approach of determination of LS in IDA fractiles for further vulnerability assessment based on the local seismic hazard map with 95 and 475 return period.

  • In this research, an obstacle avoidance method is proposed. The common usage of a robot is indoor and the obstacles to the indoor robot is studied. The accurate detection of direction after overcoming the obstacles is necessary for performance of autonomous navigation and mission project. The sensors such as Laser, Ultrasound, PSD can be used to measure the obstacles. In this research, a PSD sensor is used to detect obstacles. It detects the height and width of obstacles located on the floor. Before measuring the obstacles, a calibration of the sensor was done and it produced a better accuracy. We have plotted an error graph using data obtained from the repeated experiments. The graph is fitted to a polynomial curve. The polynomial equation is used for the robot navigation. And in this research, a model of the error of the direction of the robot after overcoming obstacles was obtained also. The prototype of the obstacle and the error of the direction after overcoming the obstacles are modelled using a neural networks. The input of the neural network composed with the height of the obstacles, the speed of robot, the direction of wheels and the error of the direction. To implement the suggested algorithm, we set up a robot which is operated by a notebook computer. Experiment showed the suggested algorithm performed well.

  • An automated signal-acquisition method for the NASA's space geodesy satellite laser ranging (SGSLR) system is described as a selection of two system parameters with specified probabilities. These parameters are the correlation parameter: the minimum received pulse number for a signal-acquisition and the frame time: the minimum time for the correlation parameter. The probabilities specified are the signal-detection and false-acquisition probabilities to distinguish signals from background noise. The steps of parameter selection are finding the minimum set of values by fitting a curve and performing a graph-domain approximation. However, this selection method is inefficient, not only because of repetition of the entire process if any performance values change, such as the signal and noise count rate, but also because this method is dependent upon system specifications and environmental conditions. Moreover, computation is complicated and graph-domain approximation can introduce inaccuracy. In this study, a new method is proposed to select the parameters via a conditional equation derived from characteristics of the signal-detection and false-acquisition probabilities. The results show that this method yields better efficiency and robustness against changing performance values with simplicity and accuracy and can be easily applied to other satellite laser ranging (SLR) systems.

  • In the mine exploitation stage; one of the critical issues is the stability assessment of post-pillars. The instability of post-pillars leads to serious safety hazards in mining operations. The focus of this study is to assess the stability of post-pillars in the 130# stope in the central ore body at Trepça hard rock mine by employing both conventional (i.e., critical span curve) and numerical methods (i.e., FLAC3D). Moreover, a new numerical based index (i.e., Pillar Yield Ratio-PYR) was proposed. The aim of PYR index is to determine a border line between stable, potentially unstable, and failure state of post-pillars at a specific mine site. The critical value of pillar width to height ratio is 2.5 for deep production stopes (e.g., > 800 m). Results showed that pillar size, mining height and mining depth significantly have affected the post-pillar stability. The reliability of numerical based index (i.e., PYR) is verified based on empirical underground pillar stability graph developed by Lunder, 1994. The proposed pillar yield ratio index and pillar stability graph can be used as a design tool in new mining areas at Trepça hard rock mine and for other situations with similar geotechnical conditions.

  • Identifying students' achievement level and reflecting it on educational policy making or instructional improvement by analyzing the results of nationwide standardized assessment is an integral part of accountability in education. On the basis of this premise, we analyzed the characteristics of National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) items for middle school science subject conducted from 2010 to 2013 by using the option response rate distribution curve, the fittest graph estimated from the response rate of correct/incorrect options by achievement score. Furthermore, we classified the type of option response rate curve in terms of correct and incorrect options. Results of the analysis of option response curve showed that five types of correct option response curve (S-shaped, J-shaped, straight-shaped, F-shaped, and step-shaped) and 4 types of incorrect option response curve (down-slope, flat, mound, and up-slope) were identified. The most common type of items was the combination of S-shaped correct option response curve and down-slope incorrect option response curve, which are considered as appropriate items to discriminate the students according to achievement level. Moreover, correct option response was found to be correlated with incorrect option response. Based on the results, we also discussed some implications on teaching-learning method and classroom assessment in science education.

  • The stability assessment of abandoned gangway for the purpose of services was performed. Among the many factors that affect the stability of openings, the span of the opening in a given rock mass condition provides an important element of design. In this paper, the stability of gangway was assessed by the critical span curves proposed by Lang, the modified Mathews'stability graph method and using support measures of the Q system. In the evaluation of stability as a whole the gangway is considered as stable. But the rockfalls of wedge-shaped blocks were expected in the area in which the horizontal joints of low angle appear. The support measures such as local rock bolts are required to use for commercial purposes of the abandoned gangway. And entrance section may require the particular attention as unstable section. Since there are so many spalling due to bad blasting in the roof and sidewall of gangway, the scaling operations should be followed primarily.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain the making procedure and the usage of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for interpretation of radiographic images. The conventional radiograms obtained after the creation of the lesions in the acrylic plates and were enhanced in color. The observer were informed of which tooth to examine, the 'a priori' probability of a lesion present and the approximate diameter of the lesions. The two groups of films were interpreted separately by the same observer using the same rating scale. The following rating scale was used: A; definitely no lesion, B; probably no lesion, C; not sure, D; probably a lesion, and E; definitely a lesion. In analysis, for each observer the diagnostic results in terms of true positive (TP) and false positive (FP) decisions were plotted on a graph. The lowest point on the graph represents the TP and FP when only decisions designated as E according to the rating scale are included. The next point shows the TP and FP values when diagnoses designated as D are added and so forth. By connecting such plot points, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves is obtained. The area under the curve represents the diagnostic accuracy resulting from a diagnostic performance at pure chance level and a value of 1.0 at perfect performance. This method has been known as an useful method to detect the minute difference for each radiographic technic, each observer and for the different lesion depths.

  • In this study, a uroflowmetry system was developed to detect a voiding symptom conveniently at home or hospital. A implemented hardware was composed of mechanism and system circuit part, the software was developed to process uroflow data, graph display, extraction of parameter, and evaluation of congregate rate so as to analysis obtaining uroflow data. The following experiment was performed to evaluate an ability of classification and fitness. The curve pattern of uroflow was classified into each symptom. Various parameters were calculated in the curve pattern of each uroflow as follows. The parameters are MFR, AFR, VOL, VT, and FT. A significant difference among parameters was examined by a statistical analysis for extracted parameters between normal and abnormal experimental group. The uroflow data with the various symptom was divided into normal and abnormal group using fuzzy classifier. The result of the fuzzy classification using MFR and AFR was superior by 91.23 % than grouping evaluation including VOL.
