  • This paper presents a technique for estimating discharge rating curve parameters. In typical practical applications, the original non-linear rating curve is transformed into a simple linear regression model by log-transforming the measurement without examining the effect of log transformation. The model of pseudo-likelihood estimation is developed in this study to deal with heteroscedasticity of residuals in the original non-linear model. The parameters of rating curves and variance functions of errors are simultaneously estimated by the pseudo-likelihood estimation(P-LE) method. Simulated annealing, a global optimization technique, is adapted to minimize the log likelihood of the weighted residuals. The P-LE model was then applied to a hypothetical site where stage-discharge data were generated by incorporating various errors. Results of the P-LE model show reduced error values and narrower confidence intervals than those of the common log-transform linear least squares(LT-LR) model. Also, the limit of water levels for segmentation of discharge rating curve is estimated in the process of P-LE using the Heaviside function. Finally, model performance of the conventional log-transformed linear regression and the developed model, P-LE are computed and compared. After statistical simulation, the developed method is then applied to the real data sets from 5 gauge stations in the Geum River basin. It can be suggested that this developed strategy is applied to real sites to successfully determine weights taking into account error distributions from the observed discharge data.

  • Reliable flow measurement for dry season is very important to set up the in-stream flow exactly and total maximum daily load control program in the basin. Especially, in the points which tidal current effects are dominant because reliability of the low measurement decrease. The reliable measuring methods are needed. In this study, we analysis the water surface elevation difference of water surface elevation. Quantity relationship to consider tidal currents in these regions. It is known that tidal current effects from Nakdong river barrage are dominant in Samrangjin measuring station. We developed multiple regression equation with water surface elevation, quantity, and difference of water surface elevation and compared these results water measured rating curve. All of these regression equation including linear regression equation and log regression equation fits better measured data them existing water surface elevation quantity line and Among three equations, the log regression equation is best to represent the measured the rating curve in Samrangjin point. The log regression equation is useful method to obtain the quantity in the regions which tidal currents are dominant.

  • A battery state-of-health (SOH) estimation algorithm using a machine learning-based linear regression method is proposed for estimating battery aging. The proposed algorithm analyzes the change trend of the open-circuit voltage (OCV) curve, which is a parameter related to SOH. At this time, a section with high linearity of the SOH and OCV curves is selected and used for SOH estimation. The SOH of the aged battery is estimated according to the selected interval using a machine learning-based linear regression method. The performance of the proposed battery SOH estimation algorithm is verified through experiments and simulations using battery packs for electric vehicles.

  • Nowadays, car manufacturers applied many high strength steels such AHSS or UHSS to car bodies for weight lightening. Therefore, a variety of applied steel sheet to car bodies increased and the needs of simulation to evaluate weldability also increased in order to reduce the cost and time. In this study, resistance spot welding simulations for DP 780 Steel with 1.0 and 1.4 mm thickness were conducted with respect to lobe curve. 2 regression models to estimate tensile shear strength were suggested and they were second order polynomial regression model and optimized second order regression model. The performance of these models was evaluated in terms of the coefficient of determinant and average error rate.

  • The smoothing parameter or bandwidth is crucial to performance of the kernel based regression estimator. So the choice of a "optimal" smoothing parameter produce a single curve estimate. If a single estimate is replaced by a family of estimates, it become easy that we understand what varies with choice of the smoothing parameter. This paper suggests the threshold of the maximum bandwidth and the number of the family members in the regression context.n context.

  • In survival analysis, the Nelson-Aalen estimator and Peterson estimator are often used to estimate a cumulative hazard function in randomly right censored data. In this paper, we suggested the smoothing version of the cumulative hazard function estimators using a Bezier curve. We compare them with the existing estimators including a kernel smooth version of the Nelson-Aalen estimator and the Peterson estimator in the sense of mean integrated square error to show through numerical studies that the proposed estimators are better than existing ones. Further, we applied our method to the Cox regression where covariates are used as predictors and suggested a survival function estimation at a given covariate.

  • Galloping is one of the most serious vibration problems in transmission lines. Power lines can be extensively damaged owing to aerodynamic instabilities caused by ice accretion. In this study, the accident probability induced by galloping phenomenon was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. As former studies have generally concluded, main factors considered were local weather factors and physical factors of power delivery systems. Since the number of transmission towers outnumbers the number of weather observatories, interpolation of weather factors, Kriging to be more specific, has been conducted in prior to forming galloping accident estimation model. Physical factors have been provided by Korea Electric Power Corporation, however because of the large number of explanatory variables, variable selection has been conducted, leaving total 11 variables. Before forming estimation model, with 84 provided galloping cases, 840 non-galloped cases were chosen out of 13 billion cases. Prediction model for accidents by galloping has been formed with logistic regression model and validated with 4-fold validation method, corresponding AUC value of ROC curve has been used to assess the discrimination level of estimation models. As the result, logistic regression analysis effectively discriminated the power lines that experienced galloping accidents from those that did not.

  • Local polynomial regression estimation is the most popular one among kernel type regression estimator. In local polynomial regression function esimation bandwidth selection is crucial problem like the kernel estimation. When the regression curve has complicated structure variable bandwidth selection will be appropriate. In this paper, we propose a variable bandwidth selection method fully data driven. We will choose the bandwdith by selecting minimising estiamted MSE which is estimated by the pilot bandwidth study via croos-validation method. Monte carlo simulation was conducted in order to show the superiority of proposed bandwidth selection method.

  • The wave height and period regression curve is widely used to estimate the design wave period. In this study, the parameters of the curves are estimated, compared, and evaluated using the linear, robust linear, and nonlinear regression methods, respectively. The data used in the design wave height estimation are the annual maxima (AM) wave height and period data sets divided by typhoon and non-typhoon conditions, provided by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (2019). The estimation parameters show significant differences in the local coastal waters and the estimation methods. The estimation parameters based on the Suh et al. (2008, 2010) method show the apparent bias, under-estimation in the intercept (scale) parameter, and over-estimation in the slope (exponent) parameter, respectively.

  • In this study, the separation of short and long durations for estimation the parameters of IDF curve is suggested by using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA). Objective functions are to minimize root mean squared error (RMSE) and relative RMSE between observed and computed values. The criteria for separation are two; the first one is to estimate more precisely the parameters of IDF curve and the second is to make a single IDF curve without non-continuous duration point. For this purpose 22 rainfall recording gauges operated by Korea Meteorological Administration are selected and three IDF curves that are used generally in South Korea are tested. The result shows that the IDF curve developed by Heo et al. (1999) would be the best of three tested IDF curves, and the suggested parameter estimation method using MOGA can compute more reliable parameters compared with empirical regression analysis.
