Objective: The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of long turn mechanism by describing long turns after kinematic analysis and provide skiers and winter sports instructors with data through which they are able to analyze right postures for turns in skiing in a systematic, rational and scientific manner. Method: For this, a mean difference of kinematic variables (the center of gravity (CG) displacement of distance, trajectory, velocity, angle) was verified against a total of 12 skiers (skilled and unskilled, 6 persons each), regarding motions from the up-start to down-end points for long turns. Results: First, concerning the horizontal displacement of CG during a turn in skiing, skilled skiers were positioned on the right side at the upstart and edge-change points at a long turn. There was no difference in anteroposterior and vertical displacements. Second, in terms of CG-trajectory differences, skilled skiers revealed a significant difference during a long turn. Third, regarding skiing velocity, skilled skiers were fast at the edge-change and maximum inclination points in long turns. Fourth, there was no difference in a hip joint in terms of a lower limb joint angle. In a knee joint, a large angle was found at the up-start point among skilled skiers when they made a long turn. Conclusion: In overall, when skilled and unskilled skiers were compared, to make a good turn, it is required to turn according to the radius of turn by reducing weight, concerning the CG displacement. Regarding the CG-trajectory differences, the edge angle should be adjusted via proper inclination angulation. In addition, a skier should be more leaned toward the inside of a turn when they make a long turn. In terms of skiing velocity, it is needed to reduce friction on snow through the edging and pivoting of the radius or turn according to curvature and controlling ski pressure. Regarding a lower limb joint angle, it is important to make an up move by increasing ankle and knee angles instead of keeping the upper body straight during an up motion.

This paper describes a novel method to surface large optics mirror with an extremely high hardness, which could replace the high cost of the repetitive off-line measurement steps and the large ultra-precision grinding machine with ultra-positioning control of 10 nm resolution. A lot of diamond pellet to be attached on the convex aluminum base consists of a grinding tool for the concave large mirror, and the tool was pressured down on the large mirror blank. The tool motion at an interval on the spiral path was controlled with each feed rate as the dwell time in the conventional computer-controlled polishing. The shape to be surfaced was measured directly by a touch probe on the machine without any separation of the mirror blank. Total 40 iterative steps of the surfacing and measurement could demonstrate the form error of RMS $7.8{\mu}m$, surface roughness of Ra $0.2{\mu}m$ for the mirror blank with diameter of 1 m and spherical radius of curvature of 5400 mm.
This paper deals with the low velocity impact response and dynamic stresses of composite sandwich truncated conical shells (STCS) with compressible or incompressible core. Impacts are assumed to occur normally over the top face-sheet and the interaction between the impactor and the structure is simulated using a new equivalent three-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) spring-mass-damper (SMD) model. The displacement fields of core and face sheets are considered by higher order and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), respectively. Considering continuity boundary conditions between the layers, the motion equations are derived based on Hamilton's principal incorporating the curvature, in-plane stress of the core and the structural damping effects based on Kelvin-Voigt model. In order to obtain the contact force, the displacement histories and the dynamic stresses, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. The effects of different parameters such as number of the layers of the face sheets, boundary conditions, semi vertex angle of the cone, impact velocity of impactor, trapezoidal shape and in-plane stresses of the core are examined on the low velocity impact response of STCS. Comparison of the present results with those reported by other researchers, confirms the accuracy of the present method. Numerical results show that increasing the impact velocity of the impactor yields to increases in the maximum contact force and deflection, while the contact duration is decreased. In addition, the normal stresses induced in top layer are higher than bottom layer since the top layer is subjected to impact load. Furthermore, with considering structural damping, the contact force and dynamic deflection decrees.

In this study, lower extremity joint kinematics and kinetics and lumbar lordosis were investigated for two different symmetrical lifting techniques(squat and stoop) using the three-dimensional motion analysis. Twenty-six male volunteers lifted boxes weighing 5, 10 and 15kg by both squat and stoop lifting techniques. There were not significant differences in maximum lumbar joint moments between the two techniques. The hip and ankle contributed the most part of the support moments during squat lifting, and the knee flexion moment played an important role in stoop lifting. The hip, ankle and lumbar joints generated power and only the khee joint absorbed power in the squat lifting. The knee and ankle joints absorbed power, the hip and lumbar joints generated power in the stoop lifting. The bi-articular antagonist muscles' co-contraction around the knee joint during the squat lifting and the eccentric co-contraction of the gastrocnemius and semitendinosus were found to be important for straightening up during the stoop lifting. At the time of lordotic curvature appearance in the squat lifting, there were significant correlations in all three lower extremity joint moments with the lumbar joint. Differently, only the hip moment had significant correlation with the lumbar joint in the stoop lifting. In conclusion, the knee extension which is prominent kinematics during the squat tilling was produced by the contributions of the kinetic factors from the hip and ankle joints(extensor moment and power generation) and the lumbar extension which is prominent kinematics during the stoop lifting could be produced by the contributions of the knee joint kinetic factors(flexor moment, power absorption, bi-articular muscle function).
Since PSDs(Platform Screen Doors) are set up at many subway stations, their design related to safety has become gradually important. In particular, the interference check with a running railway vehicle is the most important of performance indices because the collision between PSDs and vehicles can be dangerous for passengers in the car and on platforms. When the train comes into a station with a curvature, the passenger car has a large translational and rotational motion and the displacement is enough for coming in contact with PSD. The performance is affected by many design parameters such as rail design parameters and vehicle velocity. This study proposes dynamic analysis models for railway vehicles and rails. Some parameters were also considered in the models to determine their influence on the performance.

A flexible thermoelectric module, which consisted of 18 pairs of Bi2Te3-based hot-pressed p-n thermoelectric legs, were processed by filling the module inside with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and removing the top and bottom substrates. Its power generation properties and bending characteristics were measured. With putting the flexible module on the wrist, an open circuit voltage of 2.23 mV and a maximum output power of 1.69 ㎼ were generated during staying still. On the other hand, an open circuit voltage of 3.32 mV and a maximum output power of 3.41 ㎼ were obtained with walking motion. The resistance variation of the module was kept below 1% even after applying 30,000 bending cycles with a bending curvature radius of 25 mm.

An experiment was performed to local heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number in the circular duct of 180.deg. bend for Re=6*10$^{4}$, 8*10$^{4}$ and 1*10$^{5}$ at swirling flow and non-swirling flow conditions. The test tube with circular section was made by stainless which has curvature ratio 9.4. The wall of test tube was heated directly by electrical power to 3.51 kw and swirling motion of air was produced by a tangential inlet to the pipe axis at the 180 degree. Measurements of local wall temperatures and bulk mean temperature of air are made at four circumferential positions in the 16 stations. The wall temperatures show particularly reduced distribution curve at bend for non-swirling flow but this effect does not appear for swirling flow. Nusselt number distributions for swirling flow which was calculated from the measured wall and bulk temperatures were higher than that of non-swirling flow. Average Nusselt number of swirling flow increased about 90 ~ 100% than that of non-swirling flow whole through the test tube. The Nu/N $u_{DB}$ values at the station of 90.deg. for non-swirling flow and swirling flow are respectively about 2.5 and 4.8 at Re=6*10$^{4}$. Also that is good agreement with Said's result for non-swirling flow. flow.

The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with unsymmetric axis are derived in Cartesian coordinates rather than in polar coordinates. in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for parabolic arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and SAP 2000 are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The convergent efficiency is highly improved under the newly derived differential equations in Cartesian coordinates. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters the rise to chord length ratio. the span length to chord length ratio, and the slenderness ratio. Also typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are presented.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and necessity of combined anterior approach [discectomy and fusion] and posterior approach[open-door laminoplasty] in the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Methods : The authors reviewed 14 cases in whom combined anterior and posterior approach performed for cervical myelopathy due to simultaneous anterior and posterior pathology such as huge central disc herniation with narrow spinal canal between January 2000 and December 2002. Clinical symptoms were evaluated by Japanese Orthopaedic Association [JOA] score and then the cervical curvature, change of spinal canal to vertebral body[SC/VB] ratio and canal widening were measured and compared to the clinical symptoms. Results : The mean JOA score increased from $10.4{\pm}3.1$ preoperatively to $14.8{\pm}1.2$ at the final follow up with a mean recovery rate 66.4%. In all cases, there were not neurologic deterioration. Mild postoperative complications developed in two cases. One patient had a limitation of range of neck motion and the other one showed kyphotic change. Postoperative radiography showed an improvement of body to canal ratios [average $0.70{\pm}0.08$ before surgery to $1.05{\pm}0.12$ after surgery and mainte nance or recovery of cervical lordosis. Canal widening of antero-posterior diameter and dimension after operation is 6.8mm. $116.61mm^2$. Conclusion : Combined anterior and posterior procedure could be helpful in decompression of the spinal cord and good functional recovery in spondylotic myelopathy patients with combined anterior and posterior pathology such as huge disc herniation accompanying narrow spinal canal.
This paper presents a systematic approach for estimating fragility curves and damage probability matrices for different frequencies. Fragility curves and damage probability indicate the probabilities that a structure will sustain different degrees of damage at different ground motion levels. The seismic damages are to achieved by probabilistic evaluation because of uncertainty of earthquakes. In contrast to previous approaches, this paper presents a method that is based on nonlinear dynamic analysis of the structure using empirical data. This paper presents the probability of damage as a function of peak ground acceleration and estimates the probability of five damage levels for prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge pier subjected to given ground acceleration. At each level, 100 artificial earthquake motions were generated in terms of soil conditions, and nonlinear time domain analyses was performed for the damage states of PSC bridge pier structures. These damage states are described by displacement ductility resulting from seismic performance based on existing research results. Using the damage states and ground motion parameters, five fragility curves for PSC bridge pier with five types of dominant frequencies were constructed assuming a log-normal distribution. The effect of dominant frequences was found to be significant on fragility curves.
