  • In this study, the 4-point bending test has been performed in order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strength of as-welded specimens has been satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of domestics and AASHTO & JSSC, and fatigue strength at $2{\times}106cycles$ of TIG-dressing specimens has been increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks have been occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes are low, and grown as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has been closely related to the flank angel and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has been largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

  • Purpose: Changes in the curvature of the vertebral columns of elderly women with increasing age causes various side effects and disorders. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the 8-figure scapular brace to improve pulmonary function and balance ability based on lung capacity and foot pressure by increasing the vertebral curvature. Methods: Seventeen elderly women with a forward head posture were selected. Women were asked to wear the 8-figure scapular brace and the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were measured, as were changes in foot pressure. Measurements were conducted three times each and the mean values were used for subsequent analyses. For static evaluation, we used the paired t-test to identify differences between pre and post values. Results: There was no significant difference in FEV1 and FVC before and after use of the brace (p>0.05); however, there was a significant decrease in forefoot pressure and an increase in rearfoot pressure following application of the brace (p<0.05). Conclusion: Application of the 8-figure scapular brace to correct vertebral curvature in elderly women influenced pressure distribution change from immediate effect body arrange of cervical and thoracic. However, wearing the 8-figure scapular brace may interfere with expansion of the chest and therefore respiratory muscle activity. Accordingly, it is necessary to apply appropriate treatment when wearing a scapular brace and to allow a sufficient intervention period while also providing therapeutic interventions such as posture correction or respiration training.

  • Turbulent Couette flow between coaxial cylinders with inner one rotating has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The radius ratio of the coaxial cylinders is 0.43. Mean velocity and turbulent stresses have been measured by hot-wire anemometer in the range of Reynolds number based on the velocity at rotating wall and the radial distance between walls, 60,900-187,000. For the numerical computation, the Reynolds stress model has been used as a turbulence closure model. Measurements of mean velocity show that the velocity profile of wall layer largely deviates from universal logarithmic law due to the effect of streamline curvature, especially in the region near the stationary outer cylinder. The results computed with the Reynolds stress model agree well with the experimental data in the prediction of circumferential intensity of turbulent fluctuations. However, the computed level of radial intensity is much higher than the measurement. Curvature-corrected versions of the Reynolds stress model improves the prediction of turbulent intensities, but the results are not fully satisfactory.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional algorithm for the insulation design of the high-voltage equipment is presented. In general, the insulation design consists of two steps. They are electric field calculation and correction of the shape to be designed. In the proposed algorithm, the combination method of charge simulation and surface charge simulation is used to calculate the three-dimensional electric fields. As for the correction of the shape, indirect control provided by rational B-spline is more useful than direct control. The use of rational B-spline reduces in the number of design variables and garrantees the smooth curvature of the designed shape. The proposed algorithm is applied to the design of the shape of the shield ring which has been designed by the method of trial and error.

  • Nuclear fuel bundles are designed such that the heat flux at a-fuel pin surface should not exceed the critical heat flux (CHF) during normal operation and anticipated transient. Therefore, evaluation of the CHF for fuel bundle is demanded in an exact and reliable manner. One of the major concerns with the current application of CHF correlations is that the CHF based on circular tubes is applied to the fuel bundle subchannel analysis, mainly in terms of the hydraulic diameter with correction factors which may result in a source of possibly large uncertainties in CHF prediction. The hydraulic diameter does not recognize the local properties of fluid nor such effect as the surface curvature; the turbulence action on the convex surface is much more pronounced than that on the concave surface. Even for the tube having concave curvature, the effect of tube diameter on CHF becomes important with decreasing diameter. These facts imply that the convex curvature effect is significant and crucial to the reliable CHF prediction. This paper reviews and discusses analytical and experimental aspects of effect of transverse convex curvature in incompressible turbulent flow and heat transfer, and on CHF. Flow models to quantify this effect are briefly mentioned and future works are recommended.

  • In order to operate CD and DVD compatibly in a pickup system, the objective lens comprise diffractive optical element(DOE) zone and aspheric curvature on its lens surface. The DOE objective lens is effective to simplify this dual-purpose pickup system of the 655nm and 785nm wavelength by using only one lens, but requires more precision manufacturing process and system due to the complicated shape. This paper presents the overall manufacturing process of this objective lens and describes main parameters in each process, for the correction of the aspheric surface in its core, the shrinkage compensation after injection molding, and the uniformity compensation by adjusting molding conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the subsonic airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid-incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid-compressible flow analysis. The Goradia's integral method and the Truckenbrodt integral method are adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar flow and the turbulent flow respectively. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. And the analysis of the seperated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered and its geometry expressed by the formula of Summey & Smith when no seperation occurs. A computational efficiency is verified by the comparison of the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

  • In this paper, a combining trust region and line search algorithm for equality constrained optimization is proposed. At each iteration, we only need to solve the trust region subproblem once, when the trust region trial step can not be accepted, we switch to line search to obtain the next iteration. Hence, the difficulty of repeated solving trust region subproblem in an iterate is avoided. In order to allow the direction of negative curvature, we add second correction step in trust region step and employ nonmonotone technique in line search. The global convergence and local superlinearly rate are established under certain assumptions. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • An experimental study has been performed to investigate the characteristics of forced convective heat transfer in a rectangular duct with a 180.deg. bend. The Nusselt number of outer wall has maximum value near 105.deg. at which secondary flow is most active and the Nusselt number of inner wall has maximum value near the inlet of a duct. Near the outlet of a duct, the Nusselt number of outer wall decreases, the Nusselt number of inner wall increases and so those access each other through the influence of a straight duct attached to the end of a duct with a 180.deg. bend. Results of this experimental study would be the fundamental data when streamline curvature correction models are developed in the numerical study for forced convective heat transfer in a curved duct.
