  • This work summarizes the current state of the art in software radio for 4G systems. Specifically, this work demonstrates that classic radio structures, e.g., heterodyne reception, homodyne reception, and their improved implementations, are inadequate selections for multi-mode reception. This opens the door to software defined radio, a novel reception architecture which promises ease in multi-band, multi-protocol design. The work presents the many advantages of such an architecture, including flexibility, reduced cost via component reduction, and improved reliability via, e.g., the elimination of environmental instability. The work also explains the limitations that currently curtail the widespread use of SDR, including issues surrounding A/D converters, management of software and power, and clock generation. This provides direction for future research to enable the broad applicability of SDR in 4G cellular and beyond.

  • Waste policy instruments such as garbage bag-fee system and recycling policy initiated in 1995 have contributed to the reduction of solid waste generation. Rural areas now produce less amount of solid wastes in terms of per capital than urban areas and as compare to a decade ago. However, most policy efforts since the early 1990s related to waste issue have been concentrated in urban areas. Waste problems in rural areas are not the amount itself, but the specific characteristics which are unique in rural regions. Large portion of solid wastes and farming wastes are being illegally treated and/or burned out. Surveys show that the main reasons for the illegal treatment of rural wastes are th lack of systematic policy tools targeting on them, insufficient financial capacity and man power of local governments, rural people's cognition problem about wastes, among others. This study reviews current features of the treatment of rural solid wastes and provides policy suggestions for the resolution of the problem.

  • LED lighting because of high efficiency, long life, friendly environment, as a general lighting of the next generation, has been substituted for incandescent bulb and fluorescent lamp. The proposed system for use of solar battery is the intelligent controller for LED street lights which is improved the method of battery charging and charging efficiency in winter to extend battery life cycle, controlled lighting current according to SoC and in steps. Also, it is implemented emotional lighting which is controlled with the surrounding environment, by using colorful sub LED to take up 10[%] of a source of total light, white LED. As a lab results, the proposed system was implemented functions to adapt to the environmental changes, and improved the charging efficiency and battery life cycle.

  • In this paper, the stability criterion for cryocooler-cooled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils is discussed. We choose the current, Itr at which "thermal runaway" occurs, as a stability criterion and adopt the relationship between the cooling power of GM cryocooler and the heat generation in coil system to evaluate Itr. We also investigate the transient behavior during a quench process in HTS coils by a newly developed FEM computer program.

  • A robust economic dispatch algorithm involving transmission losses is proposed and investigated for a possibility of on-line applications. In this paper, the penalty factors are calculated directly from transposed Jacobian of load flow analysis with advantages of superiority to B-coefficients method based on its computation time and suitability for real time application since the approach is based on a current system condition. The proposed algorithm is systematically handling the generation capacity constraints with transmission losses. Implementation of the algorithm for IEEE systems and EPRI Scenario systems shows that computation time is enough to apply on-line economic dispatch to large power system and production cost is saved compared with the crude classical economic dispatch algorithm without considering transmission losses.

  • Current international concerns are the energy crisis due to climate change and depletion of fossil fuels due to global warming. Korea has a very high dependency on energy imports 93%. In Korea, 63% of the country is forested, and a power plant using wood biomass is being built in Korea. Biomass fly ash, a by-product of biomass energy generation, is now being discarded. There is little research to utilize discarded biomass fly ash. Therefore, this study aims to solve the environmental problems, develop new mixed materials, improve the quality and utilize the biomass fly ash, which is a by-product of the industrial waste. As a result of the experiment, the flowability decreased as the replacement ratio of biomass fly ash increased. As the replacement ratio of biomass fly ash decreased, the amount of air content.

  • The superconducting generator and motor have many advantages over the conventional machines. The better characteristics originates from the higher magnetic field density by way of superconducting field coil which conducts the operating current with very large density. The major merits of the superconducting machines can be explained as the smaller size and weight as well as the higher efficiency. The compactness would be very useful for the applications such as ship propulsion motors and the higher efficiency is expected to play a good role in saving the electricity generation cost for the generators used in power plants. In spite of these advantages the main reason for the lazy commercialization is known as the expensiveness of the superconductors and the cryogenic systems. In this paper focusing on the superconducting generator, we will consider and estimate the economic effectiveness when the machines permeate into the actual AC generator market in Korea gradually.

  • To synchronize the distributed generation (DG) unit with the grid, the voltage sensors are generally employed to obtain the grid phase angle. This paper presents an observer-based voltage sensorless control scheme for a three-phase inverter connected to the grid through an LCL filter. The proposed control scheme consists of an augmented state observer and a feedback controller. The augmented state observer is used to estimate the grid voltages and states of the inverter system, which are then employed to determine the grid voltage angle and to construct the feedback controller. As a result of using the observer, only the grid current sensors are required to accomplish the control scheme. The simulation results are given to prove the validity of the proposed control scheme.
