The arc characteristics have influences on the current interruption phenomena in the regimes of low current as well as high current. It is very important to understand the arc characteristics for the initial design of a circuit breaker. This article describes the theoretical analysis of the arc characteristics by means of arc energy integral method when convection dominated low current arcs are produced in the dual-nozzle air and $SF_6$ gas flows of a model interrupter. The arc radius, average electric field strength and arc voltage have been investigated at the current range of 60 to 230 A and at the upstream pressure of 0.6 MPa in both air and SF6 gas. The results have been compared to show the difference of both gases and the trends similar to those of other investigations.
The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) can quickly limit the fault current shortly after the short circuit occurs and recover the superconducting state after the fault removes and plays a role in compensating the voltage sag of the sound feeder adjacent to the fault feeder as well as the fault current limiting operation of the fault feeder. Especially, the flux-lock type SFCL with an isolated transformer, which consists of two parallel connected coils on an iron core and the isolated transformer connected in series with one of two coils, has different voltage sag compensating and current limiting characteristics due to the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. The current limiting and the voltage sag compensating characteristics of a SFCL using a transformer winding were analyzed. Through the analysis on the short-circuit tests results considering the winding direction of two coils, the SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding has shown the higher limited fault current than the SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding. It could be confirmed that the higher fault current limitation of the SFCL could be contributed to the higher load voltage sag compensation.
We Investigated the current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) by fault angles. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of the primary and the secondary copper coils wound in parallel through the iron core and YBCO thin film. In this paper, the current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL by fault angles in case of the subtractive and the additive polarity windings were compared and analyzed. The flux-lock type SFCL limited fault current more quickly as the fault angles increased. On the other hand, the initial power burden of the superconducting element during the fault increased as the fault angles increased. In addition, we found that the resistance of the flux-lock type SFCL in case of the subtractive polarity winding was more increased than that of the additive polarity winding. The peak current of the fault current in case of the subtractive polarity winding was larger than that of the additive polarity winding.
As one of the countermeasures to solve the increase of the fault current in a power system, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been noticed together with the development of a various types of SFCL, which has accelerated the researches to apply a SFCL into a power system. Among the developed SFCLs, the transformer type SFCL is expected to be available for adjusting the voltage and the current ratings of the SFCL. In this paper, the fault current limiting and the bus line‘s voltage sag suppressing effect by the transformer type SFCL were investigated and the case without the transformer type SFCL was compared as well. Through the analysis on the results of the short-circuit tests, the fault current limiting and the bus-line voltage suppressing characteristics of the transformer type SFCL could be confirmed to be effectively performed.
The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) plays a role in compensating the voltage sag of the sound feeder adjacent to the fault feeder as well as the fault current limiting operation of the fault feeder. Especially, the SFCL using magnetic coupling of two coils with parallel connection has different voltage sag compensating and current limiting characteristics due to the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. In this paper, the current limiting and the voltage sag compensating characteristics of a SFCL using magnetic coupling of parallel connected two coils were analyzed. Through the analysis on the experimental results considering the winding direction of two coils, the SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to have the higher limited fault current than the SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding. In addition, it could be confirmed that the higher fault current limitation of the SFCL could be contributed to the higher load voltage sag compensation.
This paper proposes a mathematical model that can calculate the luminescence characteristics driven by alternating current (AC) power using the current-voltage-luminance (I-V-L) properties of organic light emitting devices (OLED) driven by direct current power. Fluorescent OLEDs are manufactured to verify the model, and I-V-L characteristics driven by DC and AC are measured. The current efficiency of DC driven OLED can be divided into three sections. Region 1 is a section where the recombination efficiency increases as the carrier reaches the emission layer in proportion to the increase of the DC voltage. Region 2 is a section in which the maximum luminous efficiency is stably maintained. Region 3 is a section where the luminous efficiency decreases due to excess carriers. Therefore, the fitting equation is derived by dividing the current density and luminance of the DC driven OLED into three regions, and the current density and luminance of the AC driven OLED are calculated from the fitting equation. As a result, the measured and calculated values of the AC driving I-V-L characteristics show deviations of 4.7% for current density, 2.9 % for luminance, and 1.9 % for luminous efficiency.
The series connection-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two magnetically coupled circuits was suggested and its effectiveness through the analysis on the current limiting and recovery characteristics was described. The fault current limiting characteristics of the proposed SFCL as well as the load voltage sag compensating characteristics according to the winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the series connection-type SFCL were carried out. The series connection-type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag compensating operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault appears and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than that with the subtractive polarity winding.
In economical points of view, AC loss of high temperature superconducting devices is considered as a serious problem that must be solved. Expecially, in case of HTS cables, HTS tapes are wound helically on the former to reduce AC loss. Critical characteristics of HTS tapes, however, are influenced by mechanical stress as well as electrical, temperature, and magnetical factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the over current characteristics of HTS tapes given mechanical stress when they are wound on the former. We prepared HTS tapes with the pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$, length 25cm as well as tapes with pitch angle 0$^{\circ}$. When current of over 200A$\_$rms/ was applied, we found out that there are differences to the rate of resistance increase between the case of pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$and that of 0$^{\circ}$. The rate of resistance variation in HTS tapes of pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$increased more slowly than that of pitch angle 0$^{\circ}$. As a result, we concluded that if critical characteristics of HTS tapes are degraded by any external factor, when over current is applied, the current limiting characteristics in HTS tapes won't be able to be expected any more.

Multi-loop control of a boost converter needs a current-sensing circuit to detect the inductor current. Current sensorless multi-loop control reduces the cost, size and weight of the converter. The Luenberger observer (LO) is widely used to estimate the inductor current for current sensorless control of a switching converter. However, the design of the LO-based sensorless multi-loop control has not been well presented, so far. In this paper, a closed-loop characteristics evaluation method is proposed to design an LO-based current sensorless multi-loop control for boost converters. Simulations show evaluations of the closed-loop characteristics. Practical experiments on a digital processor confirm the simulations.
The fault current has been increasing due to expansive substation facilities for meeting the increase of demand. To limit increasing fault current in a power system, among methods the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been considered to be adopted in the power grid. However, in case of adopting SFCL in the power system, most of SFCLs need to solve problems such as recovery, cost. With efforts to solve those problems, the novel fault current limiting device which is called hybrid SFCL is developed. To apply the hybrid SFCL, it has to be needed to analyze application possibility and itself operation characteristics. In this paper, the fault current limiting and operation characteristics of hybrid SFCL with first half cycle the limiting operation in case of various resistances of superconducting element were analyzed through experiment.
