Numerical simulations were performed for the evaluation of wave and current loads on a fixed cylindrical substructure model for an ocean wind turbine using the ANSYS-CFX package. The numerical wave tank was actualized by specifying the velocity at the inlet and applying momentum loss as a wave damper at the end of the wave tank. The Volume-Of-Fluid (VOF) scheme was adopted to capture the air-water interface. An accuracy validation of the numerical wave tank with a truncated vertical circular cylinder was accomplished by comparing the CFD results with Morison's formula, experimental results, and potential flow solutions using the higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM). A parametric study was carried out by alternately varying the length and amplitude of the wave. As a meaningful engineering application, in the present study, three kinds of conditions were considered, i.e., cases with current, waves, and a combination of current and progressive waves, passing through a cylindrical substructure model. It was found that the CFD results showed reasonable agreement with the results of the HOBEM and Morison's formula when only progressive waves were considered. However, when a current was included, CFD gave a smaller load than Morison's formula.
We propose a novel monitoring system for diagnosing crack faults of the wind turbine using image information. The proposed method classifies a normal state and a abnormal state for the blade parts of the wind turbine. Specifically, the images are input to the proposed system in various states of wind turbine rotation. according to the blade condition. Then, the video of rotating blades on the wind turbine is divided into several image frames. Motion vectors are estimated using the previous and current images using the motion estimation, and the change of the motion vectors is analyzed according to the blade state. Finally, we determine the final blade state using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. In SVM, features are constructed using the area information of the blades and the motion vector values. The experimental results showed that the proposed method had high classification performance and its $F_1$ score was 0.9790.
In concert with the growing emphasis placed on distributed power generation there will be a need, in the first decade of the 21th century, for a compact thermal energy system capable of providing the total energy needs of individual homes. A natural gas fueled co-generation micro-turbine with ultra low emission will meet this need. Market opportunities for a distributed micro turbine co-generation system are projected to increase dramatically. In this paper, It was determined that with current state of art component performance levels, metrallic materials, thermal efficiency goal of $28\%$ at sea level standard day conditions are attainable. Higher overall thermal efficiency of $78\%$ is attainable with micro-turbine combined with exhaust fired boilers.
The purpose of this paper is that investigates the Natural Frequency behavior characteristic of Wind Turbine Jacket Type Tower model, and calculated that the stress values of Thrust Load, Wave Load, Wind Load, Current Loda, Gravity Load, etc., environment evaluation analysis during static Operating Wind Turbine Jacket Type Tower model, carried out of Natural Frequency analysis of total load case to stress matrix, Frequency calculated that calculated Add Natural Frequency to stiffness matrix for determinant to stress results. The finite element analysis is performed with commercial F.E.M program (ANSYS) on the basis of the natural frequency and mode shape.
Wind turbine blades represent a key component of wind turbines, which extract energy from the wind. In the present study, the structural design of a small wind turbine blade is undertaken using a numerical analysis. The reliability of numerical results is verified through a comparison with the full-scale structural test data of a current blade. To modify the blade design, the blade was divided into several sections and the effect of the thickness of each section was investigated in a numerical analysis. Finally, the modified blade was designed with a lightweight and high-strength.
This paper introduces design processes of 10 MW class superconducting generator for wind Turbine. Superconducting generator can produce 5 times stronger magnetic field than permanent magnet at least, which enables large scale wind turbine to function as a lighter, smaller and more highly efficient system. These processes are targeted for higher efficiency and shorter high temperature superconductor (HTS) wires to fabricate 10 MW class superconducting generator. Three different approaches will be described in these design processes. First design process focuses on the number of rotor poles. Secondly, 270 and 360 A operating current of superconducting field coil can be adapted as a design parameter in this process. Lastly, 3 and 6 kV line to line voltage of stator coil will be used to design 10 MW class superconducting generator.
Operation conditions of a reheat cycle gas turbine for a combined cycle power plant was analyzed. Based on measured performance parameters of the gas turbine, a performance analysis program predicted component characteristic parameters such as compressor air flow, compressor efficiency, efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines, and coolant flows. The predicted air flow and its variation with the inlet guide vane setting were sufficiently accurate. The compressor running characteristic in terms of the relations between air flow, pressure ratio and efficiency was presented. The variations of the efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines were also presented. Almost constant flow functions of both turbines were predicted. The current methodology and obtained data can be utilized for performance diagnosis.
A combined cycle, 'HYBRID', is emerging as a new power generation technology that is particularly suitable for the distributed power generation system, with high energy efficiency and low pollutant emission. Currently micro gas turbines and fuel cells are attracting a lot of attention to meet the future needs in the distributed power generation market. This hybrid system may have every advantages of both systems because a gas turbine is synergistically combined with a fuel cell into a unique combined cycle. The hybrid system is believed to become a leading runner in the distributed power generation market. This paper introduces a current plan associated with the development of the hybrid system which consists of a micro gas turbine and a solid-oxide fuel cell(SOFC).
This paper deals with a ride-through technique of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine systems using energy storage unit (ESU). By increasing the machine speed, some portion of the turbine power can be stored in the system inertia during grid faults. Also keeping the operation of rotor-side converter (RSC) and grid-side converter (GSC), the rotor current and DC-link voltage can be limited. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results for 2[MW] DFIG wind turbine system.
