The procedure to design the engine mount is briefly discussed and the optimum shape design process of engine mounting rubber using a parametric approach is suggested. An optimization code is developed to determine the shape to meet the stiffness requirements of engine mounts, coupled with the commercial nonlinear finite element program ABAQUS. A bush type engine mount used in a current passenger car is chosen for an application model. The shape from the result of the parameter optimization is determined as a final model with some modifications. The shape and stiffness of each optimization stage are shown and the stiffness of the optimized model along the principal direction is compared with the design specification of the current model. Finally, an overview of the current status and future works for the engine mount design are discussed.
Instrumented indentation tests have been used for estimating material properties. In order to analyze deformation characteristics with various factors, the unloading stiffness should be properly determined from the elastic behavior. The unloading stiffness is generally obtained from the shifted power functions fitting with the experimental unloading data. However, the functions often give rise to a poor representation of actual data, and also the unloading stiffness is governed by unloading condition. In this study, both numerical and experimental conditions to obtain proper unloading stiffness were investigated. The result showed that the amount of unloading ratio and hold time played an important role in fitting the unloading curves. The current efforts can successfully provide the unloading stiffness for indentation material properties.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status and influence factor in measuring the dynamic stiffness of damping materials. The property of the dynamic stiffness of damping materials was tested and analysed in condition such as the size of test samples and the change of relative humidity in heating chamber. Test results showed that the dynamic stiffness of after-heating was lower than that of before-heating in most samples and the change of relative humidity in heating chamber got little influence of the dynamic stiffness. The resonant frequency of test sample decreased $2{\sim}7Hz$ as the decrease of the size of sample. Because it was increased that total mass per unit area of sample, the change of dynamic stiffness had little influence.
The purpose of this study is to propose the stiffness reduction factor for flat plate slabs under lateral loads. Current design code (e.g., ACI 318-05) requires considering the effects of cracks for calculating slab stiffness under lateral loads. This study collected the test results of 20 interior slab-column connections, from which stiffness reduction in each test was estimated with respect to the ratio of applied moment to cracking moment ($M_a/M_{cr}$). Based on collected data, this study proposed equations for calculating stiffness reduction with respect to $M_a/M_{cr}$. To verify the proposed equations, this study conducted the experimental test of interior slab-column connections under quasi-static cyclic loading. From the test, load-deformation curve is compared to that obtained from effective beam width method with the proposed equation for the stiffness reduction. It is shown that the effective beam width method with the proposed equation for stiffness reduction predicts accurately the test results.
Hysteretic behaviors of a seismic isolator are identified by using the regularized output error estimator (OEE) based on the secant stiffness model. A proper regularity condition of tangent stiffness for the current OEE is proposed considering the regularity condition of Duhem hysteretic operator. The proposed regularity condition is defined by 12-norm of the tangent stiffness with respect to time. The secant stiffness model for the OEE is obtained by approximating the tangent stiffness under the proposed regularity condition by the secant stiffness at each time step. A least square method is employed to minimize the difference between the calculated response and measured response for the OEE. The regularity condition of the secant stiffness is utilized to alleviate ill-posedness of the OEE and to yield numerically stable solutions through the regularization technique. An optimal regularization factor determined by geometric mean scheme (GMS) is used to yield appropriate regularization effects on the OEE.
Bearings at the obtuse corner are subjected to much larger vertical reactions than other bearings because of the geometric shape of skew bridges. The current relevant specifications require that additional bars should be disposed at the bottom of concrete deck slabs to deal with the large vertical reaction on bearings at the obtuse corner. In this study, new methods of reducing the magnitude of the vertical reaction on bearings at the obtuse corner by the stiffness adjustment of bearings were proposed. The basic concept of proposed methods was to redistribute support reactions by reducing the vertical stiffness of bearings at the obtuse corner showing a relatively large vertical reaction. For 45 simply supported skew bridges designed according to the current relevant specifications, the redistribution effect of vertical reactions by the stiffness adjustment of bearings was investigated. Parameters such as skew angle, girder spacing, and deck aspect ratio that affect the distribution of support reactions were considered. The results of the analyses show that the magnitude of the vertical reaction on bearings at the obtuse corner can be reduced to the levels of straight bridges by replacing the existing bearings at the obtuse corner with new ones having the value of 1/10 or 1/20 of the vertical stiffness of the existing bearings. The reduction effect of the vertical reaction on bearings at the obtuse corner increases as the girder spacing decreases and it is more pronounced when the deck aspect ratio is 2.0.
A lot of rotating machines are being used in the industrial world and electric motor and generator take the most part of it. When it comes to the electric motor and generator, we can not help thinking about the eddy current because it brings a loss of electric and can be a important reason of the heat generation. To attenuate eddy current. laminated silicon steel sheets are being used in general. Especially, laminated rotor is being used for rotating part of the electric motor and generator and it decreases electrical loss and heat generation but we can be faced with another problem. In general, most of the motor and generator can be normally operated under 3600rpm because they are designed to have the first critical speed more than that speed. But nowadays, they should be operated more than the first critical speed as usual with the trend of high speed. large scale and high precision in industrial world. The critical speed can be determined from the inertia and stiffness for the rotor and bearing of rotating systems. The laminated rotor stiffness can be hardly determined because it can be derived a lot factors for instance rotor material and shape. lamination material and shape. insulation material. lamination force and so on. In this paper, the change of the natural frequency of the motor was examined with the change of the lamination force as an experimental method.

Current design codes and technical recommendations often provide rough indications on how to assess effective stiffness of Reinforced Concrete (R/C) frames subjected to seismic loads, which is a key factor when a linear analysis is performed. The Italian design code (NTC-2008), Eurocode 8 and ACI 318 do not take into account all the structural parameters affecting the effective stiffness and this may not be on the safe side when second-order $P-{\Delta}$ effects may occur. This paper presents a study on the factors influencing the effective stiffness of R/C beams, columns and walls under seismic forces. Five different approaches are adopted and analyzed in order to evaluate the effective stiffness of R/C members, in accordance with the scientific literature and the international design codes. Furthermore, the paper discusses the outcomes of a parametric analysis performed on an actual R/C building and analyses the main variables, namely reinforcement ratio, axial load ratio, concrete compressive strength, and type of shallow beams. The second-order effects are investigated and the resulting displacements related to the Damage Limit State (DLS) under seismic loads are discussed. Although the effective stiffness increases with steel ratio, the analytical results show that the limit of 50% of the initial stiffness turns out to be the upper bound for small values of axial-load ratio, rather than a lower bound as indicated by both Italian NTC-2008 and EC8. As a result, in some cases the current Italian and European provisions tend to underestimate second-order $P-{\Delta}$ effects, when the DLS is investigated under seismic loading.
Perfobond rib connectors are widely used in composite structures to achieve the composite action between the steel and the concrete, and empirical expressions for their strength and secant stiffness have been obtained by numerical simulations or push-out tests. Since perfobond connections are generally in an elastic state in the service process and the structural analysis are always based on the elastic properties of the members, the secant stiffness is not applicable for the normal structural analysis. However, the tangent stiffness of perfobond connections has not been introduced in previous studies. Moreover, the perfobond connections are bearing tension and shear force simultaneously when the composite beams subjected to torque or local loads, but the current studies fail to arrive at the elastic stiffness considering the combined effects. To resolve these discrepancies, this paper investigates the initial elastic stiffness of perfobond connections under combined forces. The calculation method for the elastic stiffness of perfobond connections is analyzed, and the contributions of the perfobond rib, the perforating rebar and the concrete dowel are investigated. A finite element method was verified with a high value of correlation for the test results. Afterwards, parametric studies are carried out using the reliable finite element analysis to explore the trends of several factors. Empirical equations for predicting the initial elastic stiffness of perfobond connections are proposed by the numerical regression of the data extracted by parametric studies. The equations agree well with finite element analysis and test results, which indicates that the proposed empirical equations reflect a high accuracy for predicting the initial elastic stiffness of perfobond connections.

Repair of the rotator cuff tear is a joint-tightening procedure that can worsen joint stiffness. This paradoxical phenomenon complicates treatment of rotator cuff tear with joint stiffness. As a result, there is controversy about how and when to treat joint stiffness. As many treatments have been published, this review discusses the latest findings on treatment of rotator cuff tear with joint stiffness.
