  • The increase of fault current due to larger power demand has caused the capacity of power machines in grid to increase. To protect the power system effectively from the larger fault current, several countermeasures have been proposed. Among them, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected as one of the most effective solutions. Therefore, to introduce SFCL into power distribution system, the analysis on protection in power distribution system with SFCL is essential. In this paper, the problems of the protective coordination in power distribution system with SFCL were described.

  • This paper describes a reactive power compensator using current-source delta modulation converter, which compensates the reactive power in the ac sides of 3-phase rectifier. In the conventional current control methods for the current-type reactive power compensators, it is usual to compare the reactive reference current signal with the triangular wave and hence to generate the ON-OFF signals for the reactive power compensator. To improve the response as well as the control capability, the delta modulated current control technique is used in this paper. As a result, the input power factor is improved close to unity and both simulation and experimental results show good compensating performances.

  • This study presents a method for reducing current distortion that occurs when a dual-buck inverter generates reactive power. Dual-buck inverters, which are only capable of unity power factor operation, can generate reactive power capabilities by modifying a modulation technique. However, under non-unity power factor conditions, current distortion occurs at zero-crossing points of grid voltage and output current. This distortion is caused by parasitic capacitors, dead-time, and discontinuous conduction mode operation. This study proposes a modified modulation method to alleviate the current distortion at zero-crossing point of the grid voltage. A repetitive controller is applied to reduce this distortion of the output current. A 1 kVA prototype is built and tested. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper discusses the characteristics of sheath circulating current as well as the development and application of new software for underground power cable systems. Generally, in steady state, high sheath circulating current causes the increase of sheath temperature and thermal resistance which leads to the steeply reduction of the power capacity. Therefore, the exact calculation of sheath circulating current is required for analysis about the influence of high sheath current on permissible current. In this paper, Power Cable Simulator is developed for calculation of the sheath current. It can analyse the sheath current by real time. It is also easier to use than conventional software, such as EMTP and CabSim, because all the data for calculating the cable parameters are stored in a database(DB) within Power Cable Simulator. In addition, the accuracy of Power Cable Simulator is also proved through the comparison among the current calculated by Power Cable Simulator, EMTP and Cabsim with measured current.

  • In this paper, 200 W power supply for LED driver has been designed, analyzed, simulated and tested. Input AC voltage of 100VAC-240VAC was converted to DC voltage by high power factor converter. Output voltage was controlled, and output current was controlled by constant current when output current was reached to LED maximum rated current. By simulation and experimental test, voltage and current control and high power factor characteristics are verified.

  • Several tidal current power plants are being planned and constructed in Korea utilizing the strong tidal currents along the west and south coasts. A tidal current reaches 9.7 m on the west coast; there are few potential regions for tidal current power generation. The construction of a dam to store water can prevent the circulation of water, causing a great environmental impact on the coast and estuary. The tidal barrage could produce a large amount of power, but it should be carefully considered. The purpose of developing renewable energies is to minimize the environmental impact and to maximize the utilization of clean energy. To produce a great quantity of power, tidal current farms require the placement of numerous units in the ocean. The power generation is very dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. Also, the interactions between devices contribute greatly to the production of power. The efficiency of a power farm is estimated to determine the production rate. This paper introduces 3 D interaction problems between rotating rotors, considering the axial, transverse, and diagonal distances between horizontal axis tidal current devices.

  • A DSP-based source current control for power conditioner is presented to compensate current harmonics and asymmetries of three-phase four-wire emergency generators caused by nonlinear and/or unbalanced loads. There-phase voltage type converter with split-dc-capacitor is adopted as the power circuit and a new direct source current control method is suggested, which simplifies the controller. The proposed control method shapes the generator current sinusoidally inphase with the voltage and allows the generator to supply maximum power even to single phase loads. An IGBT base lookVA prototype with the controller realized with a DSP (TMS320C32) is built and tested to verify the performance of the power conditioner.

  • The application of a large power transformer into a power distribution system was inevitable due to the increase of power demand and distributed generation. However, the decrease of the power transformer‘s impedance causes the short-circuit current of the power distribution system to increase and thus, the higher short-circuit current exceeds the cut-off ratings of the protective devices such as a circuit breaker. To solve these problems, several countermeasures have been proposed to protect the power system effectively from the higher fault current and the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected to be the promising countermeasure. However, the current limiting effect of SFCL including its bus voltage drop compensation depends on SFCL's application location in a distributed power system. In this paper, the current limiting and the bus-voltage drop compensating characteristics of the SFCL applied into a power distribution system were studied. In addition, the quench and the recovery characteristics of the SFCLs in each location of the power distribution system were compared each other.

  • The avionic battery discharge regulator (BDR) plays an important role in a power-conditioning unit. With its merits of high efficiency, stable transfer function, and continuous input and output currents, the non-isolated Weinberg converter (NIWC) is suitable for avionic BDR. An improved peak current control strategy is proposed to achieve high current-sharing accuracy. Current and voltage regulators are designed based on a small signal model of a three-module NIWC system. The system with the designed regulators operates stably under any condition and achieves excellent transient response and current-sharing accuracy.

  • When grid voltage is unbalanced, the grid-connected output current and power of Virtual Synchronous Generators (VSGs) are distorted and quadratic. In order to improve the power quality of a grid connected to a VSG when the grid voltage is unbalanced, a comprehensive coordinated control strategy is proposed. The strategy uses the positive sequence current reference command obtained by a VSG in the balanced current control mode to establish a unified negative sequence current reference command analytical expression for the three objectives of current balance, active power constant and reactive power constant. In addition, based on the relative value of each target's volatility, a comprehensive wave function expression is established. By deriving the comprehensive wave function, the corresponding negative sequence current reference value is obtained. Therefore, the VSG can achieve the minimum comprehensive fluctuation under the premise that the three targets meet the requirements of grid connection, and the output power quality is improved. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by simulation and experimental results.
