Histogram equalization generally has the disadvantage that if the distribution of the gray level of an image is concentrated in one place, then the range of the gray level in the output image is excessively expanded, which then produces a visually unnatural result. However, a gamma transformation can reduce such unnatural appearances since it operates under a nonlinear regime. Therefore, this paper proposes a new histogram equalization method that can improve image quality by using a gamma transformation. The proposed method 1) derives the proper form of the gamma transformation by using the average brightness of the input image, 2) linearly combines the earlier gamma transformation with a CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function) for the image in order to obtain a new CDF, and 3) to finally perform histogram equalization by using the new CDF. The experimental results show that relative to existing methods, the proposed method provides good performance in terms of quantitative measures, such as entropy, UIQ, SSIM, etc., and it also naturally enhances the image quality in visual perspective as well.

In this paper, we propose an indoor positioning algorithm based on 3 points near field angle-of-arrival estimation without side information. The conventional angle-of-arrival based positioning scheme requires the distance between the listener and the center of two points which is obtained by a received signal strength based range estimation. However, a received signal strength is affected by structure of room, placement of furniture, and characteristic of signal, these effects cause a large error to estimation of angle. In this paper, the proposed positioning scheme based on near field angle-of-arrival estimation can be used to estimate the position of listener without a prior distance information, just using time-difference-of-arrival information given from 3 points microphones. The performance of the proposed scheme is shown by cumulative distribution function of root mean squared error.
Objectives : To examine whether cumulative chronic stress influences the immune status, and to verify the effect of social support on the relationship between these two dimensions in male manufacturing workers. Methods : A total of 39 workers were recruited for this study. A structured-questionnaire was used to assess general characteristics, job characteristics (work demand and decision latitude), psychosocial distress, and social support. The serum levels of CD4 and CD8 were measured as immune markers, and were collected between 8:00 and 10:00am in order to standardize the markers. Nonparametric statistics were used to estimate the differences between job characteristics and the immune markers. Results : General characteristics, and health-related behaviors, were not associated with CD4, CD8 or CD4/CD8. No relationships were found between job characteristics and the mean levels of immune reactivity. These results were consistent, even after controlling for social support. Social support failed to modify the relationship toward work demand, decision latitude or psychosocial distress to CD4, CD8, and CD4/CD8. Conclusion : Cumulative chronic life stress might not influence the immune status, and the effects of social support on the immune function under chronic stress, may not play a crucial role in modifying the relationships. This implication supports that the effect of stress on the immune function may be determined by the characteristics of that stress. further research should effectively considers the type, magnitude and timing of a stress event, and modifiable factors, such as personality traits, coping style, and hormone excretion levels, on the alteration of immune status.

In this study, to develop an assessment method for spatio-temporal riverbed changes, a 1-dimensional model (HEC-RAS) and a 2-dimensional model (CCHE2D) were built and applied. As for the analysis of a riverbed's long-term change in a real stream, three new assessment methods were developed, which are called the "Sediment section cumulative curve", "Sediment section moment", and "Sediment probability distribution function." These methods were used to assess the characteristics of riverbed changes using a consistent valuation standard and to understand changes in quantities intuitively. From the results of this study, sediment characteristics of cross sections can be detected effectively by applying the "Sediment section cumulative curve" method to determine whether there is any sedimentation or erosion in total emission. The amount of sedimentation or erosion occurring in the right or left banks, which divided by center column, could be presented as one criterion by applying the "Sediment section moment" method. This approach could be utilized as an indicator for sediment predictions. Spatio-temporal sediment variables can be presented quantitatively by determining the mean and uncertain boundaries through the "Sediment probability distribution function", and finally, the results can be illustrated for each cross section to provide intuitive recognition.

This paper considers a procedure for the economic design of a cumulative score(CUSCORE) control chart and more sensitive than X-type control chart for small shift to control the mean of a process with a exponentially distributed quality characteristic. An expected loss - cost model as a function of design variables(sample size, sampling interval, scoring limit and decision limit) is derived. Direct search techniques are used to optimize the model subject to ARL in control. Numerical examples and sensitivity analysis of the model are presented. For selected values of situation parameters a comparison study with CUSUM charts is given. CUSCORE control charts compare favourably with CUSUM charts in cost for speedy production process. The proposed control chart can be directly applied for controlling the lifetime characteristics.

Using the computer simulation method, we invest19ate the probability distribution of maximum eigenvalue of pair-wise comparison matrix, which has been used as a parameter for measuring the consistency of responses in analytic hierarchy process (AHP). We show that the shape of the distribution of the maximum eigenvalue is different according to the dimension of the matrix. In addition, we cannot find any evidence that the distribution of the Consistency Index is a Normal distribution, which has been claimed in the Previous literature. Accordingly, we suggest using so called K-index calcu1ated based on the concept of cumulative distribution function lather than based on that of arithmetic mean because the probabilistic distribution cannot be assumed to be a Normal distribution. We interpret the simulation results by comparing them with the suggestion of Saaty[11]. Our results show that using Saaty's value could be too generous when the dimension of the matrix is 3 and strict over 4. Finally, we propose new criteria for measuring the response consistency in AHP.
Sediment microcosm experiments were conducted for 14 and 28 days using Zn spiked sediment to examine chronic toxicity (mortality) of Diporeia spp. as a function of density and time. Mean cumulative Diporeia mortality in 28 day sediment microcosms was 25% at $1,800\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ total Zn in sediment. Although a certain fraction $(20{\sim}40%)$ of Diporeia was dead, its mortality was attributed by handling stress within 4 days and was not significantly encreased with increasing within the range of Zn concentrations examined in this study. These results suggest that Diporeia can tolerate Zn contaminated sediment and may be useful as a biomonitor for Zn contamination in freshwater environments.

Narrowband and wideband characterizations of radio propagation channels in tunnel environments are investigated by using ray tracing techniques. For a rectangular straight tunnel and a rectangular curved tunnel, received power is simulated when the receiver moves away from the transmitter. The fast fading statistics of the narrowband propagation are analyzed in terms of cumulative distribution function, level crossing rate and average fade duration. The tunnel wideband radio propagation channel is characterized in terms of mean excess delay and rms delay spread.

Mean opinion score (MOS) method has been used in many areas to quantify opinions of respondents not only in survey research but in evaluating the parameters of population that are not measurable of are technically hard to be measured. Histogram is an important graphical technique because of the role it plays in describing categorical data as well as quantitative. In MOS method, subjective opinions of respondents are quantified by opinion scores and the arithmetic means of opinion scores have been used to describe the interesting population. Since opinion scores are polytomous, the values of arithmetic means have little meanings. In this paper, cumulative percentage curves as a function of the means of opinion scores are derived by combining means of opinion scores and histograms. It is proposed for better interpretation to opinion scores in MOS method, one of subjective evaluation methods.
This paper presents a geostatistical methodology to model local uncertainty in spatial estimation of sediment grain size with high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Within a multi-Gaussian framework, the IKONOS imagery is used as local means both to estimate the grain size values and to model local uncertainty at unsample locations. A conditional cumulative distribution function (ccdf) at any locations is defined by mean and variance values which can be estimated by multi-Gaussian kriging with local means. Two ccdf statistics including condition variance and interquartile range are used here as measures of local uncertainty and are compared through a cross validation analysis. In addition to local uncertainty measures, the probabilities of not exceeding or exceeding any grain size value at any locations are retrieved and mapped from the local ccdf models. A case study of Baramarae beach, Korea is carried out to illustrate the potential of geostatistical uncertainty modeling.
