  • Among the prerequisites for stable neural interfacing are the long-term stability of electrical performance of and the excellent biocompatibility of conducting materials in implantable neural electrodes. Reduced graphene oxide offers a great potential for a variety of biomedical applications including biosensors and, particularly, neural interfaces due to its superb material properties such as high electrical conductivity, decent optical transparency, facile processibility, and etc. Nonetheless, there have been few systematic studies on the graphene-based neural interfaces in terms of biocompatibility of electrode materials and long term stability in electrical characteristics. In this research, we prepared the primary culture of rat hippocampal neurons directly on reduced graphene oxide films which is chosen as a model electrode material for the neural electrode. We observed that the viability of primary neuronal culture on the present structure is minimally affected by nanoscale graphene flakes below. These results implicate that the multilayer films of reduced graphene oxides can be utilized for the next-generation neural interfaces with decent biocompatibility and outstanding electrical performance.

  • This research investigates the accessibility of Korean modern values at screens from the perspectives of North American audiences while consuming Korean films and TV dramas. In order to decode Korean cultural values at screens, this study collects the data of 266 Korean films and TV dramas distributed in North America from IMDb platform, unlocking that the success of box office for Korean projects in North America is positively correlated with the characteristics of Violence & Gore and Profanity. Meanwhile, the audiences' positive responses to the violent project mainly depends on the degree of "Sex and Nudity", the plots of "social groups". The current success of Korean cultural and creative industry as well as the future global markets strengths are analyzed in this research. Stuart Hall's cultural studies approach and cultural psychological account theory are applied to discuss the success of Korean entertainment industry in the transnational cultural communication.

  • The effect of the presence of magnesium ions in the preparation of calcium phosphate (CP) thin films on the physicochemical and biological properties of the films has been investigated in this study. Five different surfaces were used and the culture plate (CTL) and CP film prepared in the absence of magnesium (CaP) were used for the comparison. Three different films were prepared at different magnesium concentrations. CP films prepared at the Mg concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 mM were designated as CaPL, CaPM, and CaPH, respectively. The observation of surface morphology of the CP films using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displayed that the presence of magnesium affected considerably the morphology of the films including a decrease of surface porosity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for the determination of the crystallinity of the CP films showed that the structure of the films was amorphous. Examination using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the prepared films consisted of calcium, phophorus, and magnesium. Cell adhesion assays elucidated that cell adhered less as the magnesium concentration increased. However, cell proliferation assays demonstrated that the cells proliferated more actively on the films prepared at the higher magnesium concentration. These results suggest that the presence of magnesium may promote the biocompatibility of CP films.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the 'Scenery of the Modern City' revealed by Korean films of 1930 40s. It is assumed that films always reflect the cityscape and human activities of those days. For the analysis, a pool of 8 Korean films from 1934 till 1944 was constructed. In these films, the sceneries of the city were represented as the following: 1) The cityscape including modern buildings and speedy transportation was intentionally represented to express visually the city of Gyeongseong under the wave of modernization. 2) The western-style architectural spaces, such as apartment, mansion, department store, cafe, and hotel, were emphasized to reflect the curiosity and longing of the general public for western culture and lifestyle.

  • Conspiracy theory is often considered as a kind of paranoid and an act of throwing all the blame solely on the Big Other who is presumed to control all the incidents behind the curtain. While, it is also assessed as a socio-political sub-culture and a way of interpreting the world full of closure and insufficient information, keeping us from grasping 'the totality'. Meanwhile recent conspiracy films reflect the ever dense and concealed anatomy of the world now. And it reveals some kind of ideological tendency which is, 'sense of catastrophe' and 'non-ideology' reflecting the world of late capitalism society. This article intends to examine the altered representational appearance and ideology in recent conspiracy films so as to understand how the conspiracy theory, the social-political interpretational mechanism, is converged into the film narrative against the backdrop of late capitalism, a socio-political condition we live in.

  • The film mulching technology is useful for controlling soil temperature and moisture by covering the soil surface, and for suppressing weeds. In this study, in order to improve the hydrolysis resistance and mechanical properties of the biodegradable mulching film, PBAT(Poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) and PLA(Poly lactic acid) were modified using a twin-screw extruder and then the physical and biodegradable properties of the film were investigated. After landfill the mulching film in soil, the weight reduction of the film was confirmed by period, and plant growth was observed after mulching in the dry paddy field for rice farming. Mulching films with improved hydrolysis resistance showed excellent crop growth properties, and biodegradable mulching films can offer potential as a new alternative for environmentally friendly, efficient and sustainable agricultural practices.

  • In the latter part of the $20^{th}$ century, the road in American culture has been identified with independence, mobility, and speed, but in his seminal poem, "Song of the Open Road," Walt Whitman characterized road journeys as simultaneously physical, intellectual, and spiritual, a view embraced by Vincent Van Gogh whose Terrace of a Caf? at Night illustrates in paint what Whitman said in words. Others such as Jack Kerouac in On the Road followed in Whitman's tradition, one taken up even more recently by David Lynch, whose films are best known for a condemnation of American suburban life, but whose Straight Story evokes a profound spirituality as part of the road. This essay explores spirituality in these various texts.

  • Korean Shamanism has long been regarded as the peripheral cult or supersition by the majoriy of the society. This fact is a result by the influence of the mass media, especially the motion pictures, which intentionally reflected the negative images of the Shamanism. The documentary films, which stress the objectivity and the reality, rather disclose the neutral position toward the Shamanism. In fact, the directors of the documentary films who have more or less close relationship with the Shamanism have tried to exhibit the mental world and the traditionality of the Shamanism. In this paper, I will explore the value of Shamanism reflected in the documentary films. I focus of two films; directed by the Korean and directed by a foreigner. In this way, I can compare the attitudes of the two directors toward the Korean Shamanism. The director of confessed that he was attracted by the aspect of a musical underlied in the shaman ritual. However, the film does not show the artistic beauty of the shaman music because the director failed to understand the essential aspect of the shaman ritual, that is, the music. In this way, the director failed to show the distinct characteristics of the shamanism to the audience. The director of , a music herself, was focused on the music of the shamanism. The story flows to the adventure to seek a "master" with a long journey to enjoy diverse genres of Korean performing arts. This story resembles the epic shaman song, the Princess Bari. In this way, the audience can easily grasp the beauty of Korean culture. Music is said to be a universal language and, at the same time, a non-universal language which reflects a special trait of a cultural community. The Korean shaman ritual music is a non-universal language that is an accumulation of the Korean culture for a long time. The Korean director fails to exhibit the essential characteristics of the Shamanism since he does not have enough knowledge toward the shaman ritual music in . However, the foreign director, who is a music herself, successively disclose the underlying beauty of Korean shaman ritual music and Korean traditional culture in .
