Nakdong technique is an unfamiliar scorching treatment using an iron heated in a kiln over 1000℃. It is a typical convention in Asian countries to treat Nakdong on the surface of paulownia species. The scorching treatment changes the surface characteristics as well as the color of the wood. This study focused on the effects of functional features such as water resistance, anti-mold, anti-termite, and sound improvement because this treatment is usually used on paulownia wood-bodied musical instruments surface. It took 28'57" for Nakdong-iron treated surface to absorb a droplet of water. The absorbance time of iron treated surface was longer than that of torch treated one. There was no noticeable effect on the anti-mold test. On the anti-termite test, there was nearly 3% more mean mass loss on the torch samples than controlled and iron treated ones. In examining the sound radiation coefficient before and after Nakdong treatment, the Nakdong-iron treated surface showed an increase in the average value of 1.2 m4/kg s, which means that it has sound quality improvement. Through this research, the Nakdong technique results are expected to be used as basic-data for further research and give a practical idea for using the traditional treatment method on the wood surface.
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage(NRICH) conducted the Asia Cooperation Programme in Conservation Science(ACPCS) to facilitate and promote the regional cooperation in the conservation of cultural heritage among Asian countries. This course was promoted to provide an opportunity to study and work together, also to share a knowledge and experience in conservation field. The target countries were from 17 Asian countries, and this year our selection committee selected 2 specialist in cultural heritage conservation field and selected persons had participated in the ACPCS course during three months. NRICH provided the round-trip airline tickets, overseas travel accident insurance and a living allowance to the course participants. And we requested programme announcement to Korean National Commission for UNESCO and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to progress favorably. This course period was three months from 29 August to 25 November, and the fields were conservation and restoration of tangible cultural heritage such as metal conservation, stone conservation, material analysis, DNA analysis, dating, biological control management of cultural heritage, environmental monitoring and so on.

To study hotels related to early modern cultural heritage, this study has, first, attempted a historical approach through literature analysis and established an early modern hotel development history. Second, it has strived to suggest tourism industrial utilization measures by studying tourism industrial utilization cases through materials on the restoration of Daebul Hotel and interviews with related parties. Consequently, the researcher offers the following as tourism industrial revitalization measures for the restoration of early modern hotels. First, restoration plans for early modern hotels from early modern heritage in each region should be made on the basis of thorough examination of justifiability and of content development plans. Second, restoration of early modern hotels in each region requires the establishment and intent of an administrative management system by local governments. Third, restoration of early modern hotels is a thing of historical significance and value and should be promoted as a business that can contribute to revitalization of tourism and economic effects, acceleration of employment, etc., in each region. Fourth, preparation of a consistent, proactive advertisement methods regarding the restoration of early modern hotels is necessary.

Exposure to the natural environment can cause damage to domestic wooden cultural assets, such as temples. Deterioration is accelerated by biological damage and various environmental factors. In this study, meteorological factors were monitored by equipment installed at Beopjusa temple of Boeun province and Seonamsa temple of Suncheon province. A statistical model was applied to these data to predict the meteorological factors and to compare the predictive performance of each meteorological factor. The resulting correlation coefficient between air and dew point temperatures was highest, at 0.95, while the correlation coefficient for relative humidity had a moderate value(0.65) at both the Beopjusa and Seonamsa temples. Thus, a general linear model was found to be suitable for predicting air and dew point temperatures. An analysis of correlation between meteorological factors showed that there was strong positive correlation between air temperature and dew point temperature, and between solar radiation and evaporation at both sites. There was a weak positive correlation between air temperature and evaporation at Beopjusa temple. Wind speed was negatively correlated with both air temperature and relative humidity at Seonamsa temple. The wind speed at this location is higher than average in winter and lower than average in summer, and it was hypothesized that the low wind speed plays a role in reducing water evaporation in summer, when both air temperature and relative humidity are high. As a result, damage to the wooden buildings of Seonamsa temple is accelerated.
A Termiticide that is applied to the soil treatment method, one of the methods for preventing termites in Korea's wooden cultural properties, will be subjected to the leaching of the effective ingredient in treated soil by the moisture behavior of rain. As a result, termiticide is deteriorated and needs to be reprocessed, but the standards and evaluation methods are nonexistent in korea. Accordingly, a basic indoor evaluation measure was proposed for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the termiticide chamber and the calculation of the reprocessing period. First, avoidance and contact toxicity were assessed at two concentrations of the same termiticide as a method for assessing termiticide suitability. The evaluation of mortality revealed that the soil termiticide used in this experiment was non-repellent, and that death from contact was confirmed. Afterwards, artificial rainfall and soil penetration tests were conducted to determine efficacy of termiticide in soil and the approximate reprocessing period was calculated by comparing the weather data. Persistence evaluation revealed perforation by termites after continuous water exposure of more than about 160 to 170mm of water injection condition. Based on the results, compared with weather data for the last five years, the termiticide of concentration used in this experiment is expected to remain effective for about one year if treated after September. The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for the establishment of a manual for the selection of termiticide for soil treatment by calculating the efficacy for termite mortality and the duration of the leaching effectiveness by water behavior in soil.
From the Asia Cooperation Program on Conservation Science(ACPCS) of National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage(NRICH), I gained conservation and management experience and knowledges which are highly applicable at the Vat Phou World Heritage site. Firstly, Check list, Mapping, Tape Test and Digital Image Analysis are simple and useful methods which can be introduced to the site directly. If we can get chance to learn more about GIS program, GIS based Database Management System would also be very liable to put into practical use since the site office has been already using the program for general purpose. Lastly, there are more other methods which can diversify the studies on cultural heritage conservation in Laos; Rebound Hardness Test, Ultrasonic Test, Infrared Thermography, XRF Analysis and Hyperspectral Image Analysis etc. To realize those research however, new equipments are needed along with proper education so more cooperation between Korea and Lao would be essential.

Paper composed mainly of organic materials and they can be used as nutrient by microorganisms. Therefore microorganisms are damaging the important documents and works of art irreversibly. Previous research reported that mycelium or spores of the fungi were observed on the wax of the volumes of King Sejong especially were heavily deteriorated by fungi. Fungal strains isolated from the annals of Joseon dynasty were identified as Biscogniauxia atropunctata, Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium polonicum, Ceriporia lacerata, Irpex lacteus. Especially Aspergillus and Penicillium are able to grow on the substrates having a 7-8% moisture content, which is much lower than the general storage condition (RH55-60%) of the paper cultural properties. Moreover, they are known as fungi cause paper deterioration and discoloration. In this study, we selected Aspergillus versicolor and Penicillium polonicum among five strains, then biological aging has been executed for 30 days. The growth of Aspergillus versicolor and Penicillium polonicum in wax was lower than wax treated paper and Hanji. The growth of them in beeswax treated paper and Hanji both were excellent.
Lacquer has been used as a natural paint or adhesive in Korea since 2nd century B.C. It has been found to have been used as an adhesive as mentioned in old records and as seen in excavated relics, It was also mixed with flour, animal glue, or fish glue to produce lacquer adhesives. Qualitative analysis and evaluation of the applicability of lacquer and additives was performed in this study. The results of EGA analysis for lacquer additives confirmed that the pyrolysis temperature of lacquer, glucose glue, and animal glue. On the basis of this result, raw lacquer sample was checked that pyrolysis product that originated from urushiol side chain (R group). Components originating from glucose and amino acid were detected in glutinous rice paste and animal glue samples. In this study, the optimum pyrolysis temperature for each lacquer and additive mixture was determined from basic qualitative analysis data. By performing the qualitative analysis of each mixture, the applicability of this technique for analyzing real relics was evaluated.
