  • Wood products are sometimes infested with cossonid weevils. A cossonid weevil, Hexarthrum brevicorne Wollaston has been found on wood boards used for printing books in the Jeonju Confucian temple and school (2004), a wood cabinet in the Museum of Milyang (2007), a wood wardrobe in the Museum of Seoul (2008) and on wood boards used for printing Buddhist scriptures in the temple of Suncheon (2008). Wood utensils for living in the Museum of Seoul were found to be infested with another cossonid weevil, Rhyncolus sculpturatus (Waltl) in 2008. To protect the cultural property from insect pests in the field of conservation science, more comprehensive insect pest management (IPM) programs are required.

  • This study is aimed at reviewed and analyzed in order to suggest the improved plans related to natural monuments. The summary of this study is as followings; First, Replacing the current term 'cultural properties', which denotes the meaning of 'goods', we need to devise an new categorization that separates such properties into cultural heritage and natural heritage under the national heritage framework. Second, the designation criteria for natural monuments should be divided into the individual realm for animals and plants respectively, since they are not divided in the current Act. Third, the guidelines for naming of natural monuments should be established with the following new categories in accordance with the clear standards. Fourth, such imbalances require us to give priority to the relatively neglected types and areas. Fifth, as the big and old trees account for more than a half of the designated plants, it is necessary to search out new resources(wet plant communities, seashores, sand dune plant communities, etc.) such as geological resources, mineral springs, hot springs, and fossils that are in danger of completely being exploited and exhausted. While most of the designated animals are protected nationally, the existing designation system is required to protect habitats and breeding places for the systematic and efficient conservation. Sixth, as long as we need to preserve those historical and cultural resources for the future generations from national and global perspectives, we should enhance their values by designating them as natural monuments even though they are protected by other regulations such as the natural environment area. Seventh, as a result of the survey, we found that more budgets and experts in the local governments, more empowered organizations, more active public participation should be provided for the better Natural Monument management in Korea. Eighth, the Lap of Natural Heritage in the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage needs to be developed to the Natural Heritage Institute to conduct the diverse activities such as researches, restoration, exhibition and education programs in a systematic and efficient way. Ninth and the last, major damages to natural monuments can be generally categorized into the artificial one and natural one, respectively. The artificial damages include toxics, soil covering, excessive humidity, fire, construction and management works, unlawful damages, fishing, oil spillage, etc, and the natural ones include lightning, storms(typhoons), heavy snowfalls, damage by insects and diseases, lack of prey, etc. This study will become meaningful in that it proposes specific measures for the improvement of the institutions, designation, and management of natural monuments on the basis of the comprehensive analysis on natural monuments. We wish to leave the other subjects related with this study to the future researches.

  • This study aimed to distinguish categories of archival information and identify properties by their detail types, so that the various forms of architectural heritage information generated can be managed based on their attributes and characteristics. First, the specific uses of terms in the legal system were reviewed and their associated concepts specifically defined. "Architectural heritage" was defined as architecture belonging to the category of tangible cultural heritage as designated by law, and "architectural heritage archival information" was defined as all kinds of material expressed by electronic processing of the actual status for preservation and management. Next, the production status of architectural heritage archival information was reviewed in relation to the legal system. This confirmed that relevant legal systems were organized hierarchically and that various types of archival information were generated in a single project. Furthermore, it was confirmed that even archival information produced in the same form contained differing contents depending on the specific purpose and method, and that there was no classification by which to cover all archival information. Finally, it was also confirmed that detailed drawing types could be categorized according to the purpose of production and the target of the records. Based on the findings of this review, the type and properties of archival information were presented as the primary classification criteria, and the architectural heritage archival information was divided into 6 general types and 27 detailed types. Specifically, the linguistic form, dimension, temporal property, and graphic form of archival information were applied as criteria for the classification of general types, and the target, production purpose, production method of archival information, and content characteristics of archival information properties of archival information by type were comprehensively reviewed.

  • The uniformed regulations for control of the height of buildings owned by individuals to protect landscape of cultural properties are causing serious social conflicts by limiting the development of landowners. It is urgent need of introducing indicators that can resolve such conflicts and evaluate the regulations of buildings, which can satisfy urban development as well as landscape management of cultural properties. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to simulate landscape changes according to the Cultural Heritage Protection Act and National Land Planning and Utilization Act by using Unity3D in the Pungnammun Gate(Treasure No. 308) of Jeonju and its surroundings, where architectural cultural property forms the symbolic landscape of the city. Then some items such as view points, target points were introduced and the quantitative evaluation of landscapes was attempted by applying the indicator of 3D Visual Exposure. As a result, the viewing opportunity and viewing area of Pungnammun Gate were not significantly influenced by changes in landscape according to the two laws. However, the change of the height of buildings by the National Land Planning and Utilization Act, which has the greatest development capacity, confirmed the possibility of weakening the identification of the Pungnammun Gate by increasing 3D Visual Exposure of the background buildings more than two times. Finally, it was confirmed that the skyline of Pungnammun Gate was clearly infringed upon development under the National Land Planning and Utilization Act, but the skyline was maintained similar to the current situation in the regulation by the Cultural Heritage Protection Act. Thus, this study is meaningful in that the application of 3D Visual Exposure showed the possibility of utilization as an indicator for quantitatively evaluating the protection of view on cultural property and skyline according to the changes of building heights.

  • Jongmyo royal shrine, located in Seoul, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a cultural relic of national value and significance. Examination of its udobakseok(granitic flagstone; thin, flat and even stepping-stones for the King) has shown that parts are in damaged condition. In this study, GIS and GPS technologies were applied to determine the extent of damage and to find granitic flagstone for replacement and restoration of the damaged stones. 1,158 out of 2,361 stone pieces of the udobakseok were damaged at Jongmyo. Replacement granitic flagstones are available on Seokmo Island, in Ganghwa County, and estimates show that approximately 100,000 pieces of stone can be quarried. This research aided the systematic management of information about availability and location of granitic flagstones for restoration of the Jongmyo udobakseok. It also demonstrated that GIS and GPS technologies can apply a critical role in managing cultural properties. The wide use of GIS and GPS technologies can be expected for survey and management of other cultural properties in addition to Jongmyo.
