  • Although design industry belongs to one of the creative industries and contributes significantly to urban cultural economy based on its cluster formation, researches on design industry are rarely made explicit from the perspective of creative industry cluster. After reviewing the life cycle of design industry clusters in Euljiro and Hongdae Area in Seoul, this study compares these two clusters with respect of diverse dimensions of creative industry cluster such as agglomeration economy, spin-off activities and institutional environments. Research methodology includes the analysis of ?Seoul Business Statistics? and the in-depth interviews with 14 professional designers. The result shows that design industry cluster in Euljiro is close to the traditional industry cluster mainly dependent on printing industry with very limited impact on urban economy, while Hongdae Area develops creative industry cluster by virtue of university spin-offs, art markets, hybrid cultural consumption spaces and the active participation of designers contributing to urban economy in diverse ways. This comparative analysis highlights the importance of various environmental components to encourage creative activities in developing the creative industry cluster.

  • This paper explores hybridity and hybridized relations that see mixings and crossings as the first moment of multicultural society. References to hybridity often assume that the definition and orientation of the term are located within biology; that is, hybridity constitutes a mixing of two formally discrete objects. In this regard, there seems to be a dialectical preoccupation with purity that goes hand in hand with discussions of hybridity. This dialectical reference to hybridity privileges whole, complete entities as the original instance before mixing, and in this way purity becomes reified. My analysis of hybridity foregrounds mixings that occur at the level of the social, not exclusively at the level of the biological. Hybridity contexts the myth of monoculturalism in the United States and foregrounds multiculturalism as the initial context around which difference has begun to be conceived. In destabilizing the myth of racial origins, this paper attempts to establish a retroactive construction of purity, which is historically, ideologically, and ethnically examined in Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/ La Frontera: The New Mestiza. Through this work composed of disparate narratives discourses, Anzaldua employs physical differences to ward off the colonial desire that has defined others as objects which are to be controlled. In this regard, this paper pursues the way that physical differences could be repositioned in terms of 'hybridity' that has been related to the cultural, historical, economical significations of borderlands. The space of borderlands is also a place marked psychologically; it will turn differences mobilized in the borderland into an acute consciousness that makes us recognize 'otherness' within ourselves. In sum, this paper attempts to elaborate the productive and creative interactions among disparate languages, classes, genders, and ideas, which will draw attention to their own interlocking nature.

  • A series of studies were carried out to establish micropropagation system, using airlift bioreactors (ebb $\varepsilon$ flood type, 5 L), of Lilium oriental hybrid 'Casa Blanca'. The bulblets with swollen basal plate were formed from bulb scales, then proliferated to bulblet clusters with swollen basal plate. Finally normal bulblets were formed from the sections. Bulblet formation and proliferation with swollen basal plate were not accomplished entirely in liquid culture of 5 L airlift bioreactors, but leafy bulb scales grew vigorously. Bulblet clusters with swollen basal plate were proliferated by periodic immersion culture. Bulblet proliferation was not affected by light, but scale leaves grew under light. MS medium containing 2.0 mg/L benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.3 mg/L indole acetic acid (IAA) was favorable to the bulblet proliferation with swollen basal plate. In liquid culture of 5 L bioreactors, bulblets from bulblet sections with swollen basal plate grew vigorously on MS medium with 70 g/L sucrose. It was effective for bulblet growth to replace the new medium after 8 weeks in culture during 16 weeks of cultural period. 15 g injection of bulblet sections as a cultural material was suitable for bulblet growth in 5 L bioreactors.

  • The styles of contemporary landscape design have diversified since the emergence of Postmodernism in landscape architecture. The diversification was mostly influenced by contemporary fine arts and architecture. This study examines the pluralistic development of Postmodern landscape design through the investigation of the influences from those sister arts. In this point of view, the main approaches of Postmodern landscape design are thought to be classified into three categories;'the formal abstract approach', 'the figurative approach' and 'the new picturesque approach'. The first category of the formal abstract approach was formulated with the concepts and vocabulary of Minimal Art and Installation Art. Its representative icons such as 'point grids' and 'stripes', and the main concepts such as the sense of 'flahess', 'expansion' and 'materiality' are mostly thought to be originated from these art forms. The second category of the figurative approach is characterised by the concepts and vocabulary of Pop Art and New Image Paintings. Its representative icons such as 'map' or 'figurative forms' and main concepts like the sense of 'reality', 'context' and 'symbolism' are mostly thought to be originated from these art forms. The third category of the new picturesque approach was formulated with the concepts and vocabulary of Land Art and Late Deconstructive Architecture. Its representative icons such as 'hybrid', 'layer' and 'fold', and the main concepts such as the sense of 'complexity', 'continuity' and 'reversibility' are thought to be originated from these art forms. The research shows that the main stream of contemporary landscape design seems to be gradually moving toward the second and third approach above, in step with the cultural orientation and the dynamism of contemporary urban life. Therefore, the study focused especially on the new picturesque approach which would be in greater need for coping with the hybrid culture today.

  • The competitiveness of the mushroom industry can be increased by diversifying the domestic Lentinula edodes cultivar. Therefore, 'Chungheung 1ho' was cultivated by hybrid breeding method using strain 'E140025,' which was collected by the Chungheung Mushroom Farming Association. Regarding the morphological characteristics of the fruit, the cap of 'Chungheung 1ho' was smaller than that of the control cultivar, whereas, its stem was longer and thicker than that of the control cultivar. In addition, the weight of the individual fruits of the new cultivar was heavier than that of the control cultivar. The period for primordia formation was 24 days for the new cultivar, which was 16-20 days later than that of the control cultivar. Furthermore, it was found that the patterns of the PCR amplification band using six URP primers were different for 'Chungheung 1ho' than those of the mating strains.

The 24 celebrities which have been called as the bests of fashion icons since year 2000 were selected by searching the most popular search engines such as daum, yahoo and google, and 13 of them were picked as the highest in preference and awareness by surveying 50 students majoring in fashion. And then their fashion styles, backgrounds, and influence on the public fashion were studied. As a result, the 21st century fashion icons reflecting the cultural characteristics such as convergence and exaggeration and the sensitivities of fusion, collaboration, hybrid sensibility in art were powerful enough to create innovative styles destroying the era and the standard. Their styles have constantly created new looks. The exposed new individual sensitivities on media-fusion of two or more sensibility and coordination techniques without being tied to the existing anchorage system-were as influential as high fashion and leaded the imitation and reproduction by dazzling the public. As the media become more powerful, the influence of fashion icons interacted more closely with the public and has been evolved through the sensitivity of the reversal, cultural, economic, visual, or temporal fusions. To sum up, it is shown that the outstanding fashion styles suggested by the leading fashion designers have approach to the public more closely by the fashion icons.

  • As the globalization has increasingly brought in the disintrgration of boundary between cultures, the hybrid of styles, or fusion styles in various cultural spheres have been introduced as important theme. With this new trend, the traditional culture of Asia appeared as the source of inspiration for the West, and as the source of enhanced pride and asset for ethnic groups which have been considered "the Other" by the West. 1990's witnessed a drastically increased interest in Orientalism and Ethnic trends in most social aspects, especially in culture and art. They have been the main theme in fashion, providing the source of inspiration with elements such as the unique color schemes, composition methods and geometrical simplicity. The creative application of traditional culture into modern design as well as fashion can make a significant contribution and be a solid foundation for the development of national culture in general, since images containing cultural authenticity are the visual representation of the nation and they can be important tools for the globalization of design. This study aims to find out the formative characteristics of Korean traditional embroidery and the ways they are applied in modern fashion by world-renowned Korean fashion designers. The purpose of this study is to make a fundamental source for further study by the same author on creative design development utilizing the result. The study methods are literature study combined with research of genuine articles from museums and personal ownership as well as photos from magazines and internet. The significance of this study lies in enhancing the appreciation of Korean traditional culture and expanding the possibility of its globalization by modern application.

  • Global society is shifting and now evolving towards glocalization, meaning the increasing role of region and multi scalar interactions between region and global social world. In this glocalization era, there has been mushrooming literature and much discussions on the impacts of place-branding and place-marketing on regional development both in academia and practical researches. The inclusive and participatory creative place-making process, however, is more quintessential than the resultant place marketing strategy. This paper tries to reassess the creative place-making based on culture-led regional development perspectives. Specifically it compares Korea and Japan's strategies and suggests a hybrid model of place-making-branding-marketing, utilizing cultural content industries. It then stresses the importance of building a virtuous circle of sustainable regional cultural industrial ecosystem including culture-based interpretation of places and improvement of community quality of life.
