Principal Component Analysis of the Classification of Yacon Cultivation Areas in Korea (주성분 분석을 이용한 야콘의 재배지대 구분)

  • To establish cultivation areas for the stable production of yacon, this study investigated the productivity and functional component contents of yacon in eight regions of Korea from 2011 to 2013. The results of principal component analysis using these data were as follows. A survey of 16 agricultural traits and meteorological data in the eight yacon cultivation areas showed that five factors (average temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, frost-free days, and fructooligosaccharide content) were highly significant at the p < 0.001 level. Among the 16 agricultural traits and meteorological data used in the main component analysis of yacon cultivation areas, approximately eight contributed to the first principal component, and approximately four contributed to each of the second and third principal components. In particular, factors related to productivity, fructooligosaccharide content, and temperature change were considered important criteria for the classification of cultivation areas. The cultivation areas were divided into three groups by principal component analysis. In Group I, containing the Jinbu and Bonghwa areas in the mid-highland region at 500-560 m above sea level, the product yield was the highest at 2,622-3,196 kg/10a, the fructooligosaccharide content was also the highest at 9.04-9.62%, and the mean temperature was $17.3-18.5^{\circ}C$. In Group II, the areas Suncheon, Okcheon, Yeoju, and Gangneung, at 20-180 m above sea level, had the lowest yield, relatively lower fructooligosaccharide content, and the highest temperature. The areas in Group III showed values intermediate between those of Group I and Group II. For the different yacon cultivation areas, the product quantity and fructooligosaccharide content differed according to the environmental temperature, and the temperature conditions and number of frost-free days are considered important indicators for cultivation sites. Therefore, in terms of producing yacon with high quality, cultivation at 500-560 m is considered to give a higher yield and functional fructooligosaccharide content.

Difference of Starch Characteristics of Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) by Cultivated Regions (재배지역에 따른 고구마(Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) 품종의 전분 특성 차이)

  • We investigated out the effect of cultivation region on the physicochemical characteristics of starch in six sweetpotato cultivars. The following sweetpotato cultivars were analyzed: Daeyumi, Shingeonmi, Jinhongmi, Shinyulmi, Yulmi, and Yeonhwangmi. Samples were cultivated in Muan, Iksan, Nonsan, Boryeong and Hamyang. The soil texture was found to be sandy loam in Muan, Iksan, and Boryeong, sandy clay loam in Nonsan, and loam in Hamyang. The starch content of the sweetpotato was higher in Muan than in Hamyang. The amylose content was 22.3-30.9%, and the highest amylose content was found in samples from Iksan. Rapid viscosity analysis showed that the samples from Hamyang had the lowest values of pasting temperature, while samples of the Daeyumi cultivar had the highest values. Thermal analysis with a differential scanning calorimeter showed that the Muan samples had the highest values of onset temperature, maximum peak temperature, and completion temperature, and the samples from Hamyang had the lowest values. There was no difference between the cultivation regions or the cultivar in the X-ray pattern of the starch or its appearance in scanning electron micrographs. Therefore, the results of this study confirm that cultivation region and cultivar play an important role in determining the quality of sweetpotato and the physicochemical characteristics of sweetpotato starch.

Growth Characteristics and Dry Matter Yields of Domestic and Foreign Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) Cultivars in Cheonan Region (천안지역에서 이탈리안 라이그라스 국내육성 품종과 외국품종의 생육특성 및 수량성)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characteristics and dry matter yields of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam., IRG) cultivars for three years (2011~2013). The cold-resistance of domestic cultivars was stronger than other foreign varieties. Among early-maturing cultivars, dry matter (DM) yield of 'Kowinearly' was significantly higher (8,751 kg/ha) than other cultivars (p<0.05). In medium-maturing cultivars, DM yield of 'Kowinmaster' and 'Tam 90' was 9,394 and 7,461 kg/ha, respectively. Of the two, the former's DM yield was higher than the latter's (p<0.05). Among late-maturing cultivars, DM yield of 'Hwasan 104' (9,809 kg/ha) was similar to 'Hwasan 101' (9,354 kg/ha), but significantly higher than the other late-maturing cultivars (p<0.05). According to the results obtained from present study, early-maturing cultivars with cold-tolerance and high productivity is required for the paddy field cultivation of an Italian ryegrass cultivar after rice harvest in Cheonan region. Medium- and late-maturing cultivars are more advantageous for the dry field cultivation of the maximum quantity that is possible. In conclusion, to select which cultivar/s to grow, the climate of the growing area, weather conditions, and the cropping system must all be considered.

Studies on the Potato Virus X and Potato Leaf Roll Virus for Disease-free Seed Potato Production (무병종서 생산을 위한 감자X바이러스 및 엽권바이러스에 관한 연구)

  • A series of experiment was carried out to study on the production of disease-free seed potatoes at the Alpine Experiment Station from 1960 to 1968, which initiated a study of comparison on degeneration of plain warm region and high altitude products and the effect of latent potato virus X (PVX) and potato leaf roll virus(PLRV) on degeneration. Particular observations were made on some aspect of the nature of potato virus disease and its control such as concentrations of PVX, range of host plants, physical properties such as concentrations of PYX, range of host plants, physical properties and carrying effect of insects, by investigating 9 different areas of the main potato producing regions (Kimhae, Taegu, Choongju, Taejoen, Suwon, Kwangju, Chonju, Cheju and Chinju). Highly purified anti-serum was separated and tested for control of the virus disease and also various method of prevention and control of PLRV were observed, using cultivation of sprouted seed tubers, early harvesting method, and systemic chemicals. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Potato yield in the plain region decreased by 32.8~66.3% in the first year cultivation of seed potatoes from colder region, and the rate of virus infection was 92.9 to 95.4%. 2. Plants of three families including, 20 species were susceptible to the PVX, and among the plants Salvia officinalis of a habits only was the carrier while the symptom of Digitalis purpurea of Screphulariaceae was masked. Necrosis and ring spot was occurred in most pJants of the Solanaceae and ring spot symptom also was observed in Nicotiana tabacum L. var. White Burley and in N. glutinosa. 3. The 8$C_2$ strain of virus had the following physical properties; thermal inactivation point, 68-$72^{\circ}C$ : dilution inactivation point, above 1, 000, 000 dilution: ageing in vitro, 240-360 days: and ageing in dry plant tissue, 30 days. 4. Myzus persicae and Oxya spp. did not transmit the 8$C_2$ strain of potato virus. 5. Virus was purified through the ammonium sulphate isolating method, and higher titer value, 1/2048 was obtained through anti-serum test. 6. Inhibition Chenopodiacae on the virus infection of potato was remarkable, and inhibition of local lesion host also was observed. 7, By earlier planting of sprouted seed tubers, growth period could be prolonged by 10 to 12 days. 8. Earlier harvest decreased much the rate of virus infection of seed potatoes. 9. According to the results of aphid control trial using systemic soil insecticides at Kangnung and Taekwanlyung, PSP 204, Disyston and Thimet was effective to aphid control. In particular, control effect of twice treatments of PSP 204 was great. 10. Treatmental effect of those chemicals lasted about 60-70 days. However, single foliar application of emulsified chemicals was not effective to potato virus control. 11. The effect of PSP 204, Disyston, and Thimet on the control of potato leaf roll virus was great, particularly in the case of two treatments of PSP 204, at Kangnung as well as at Taekwanlyung. Higher negative correlationship between the control effect of potato leaf roll virus and potato yield was observed showing the value r=-0.85 at Kangnung, and r=-0.87 at Taekwanlyung. 12. Differences in the control effects among PSP 204, Disyston, and Thimet was not noticed.

Comparative Properties of Red Ginseng Prepared with Different Cultivation Years of Fresh Ginseng Produced in Punggi Region (풍기지역 연근별 수삼의 홍삼가공 특성 비교)

  • Quality properties of red ginseng prepared with different cultivation years of fresh ginseng produced in Punggi region were investigated. Fresh ginseng cultivated for 4, 5, or 6 years was steamed for 3.5 hr and dried for 24 hr at $60{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ and subsequently for $3{\sim}4$ days at $40^{\circ}C$ under commercial conditions. Compared to 6 years-old roots, the five years-old roots showed similar or some lower quality properties in terms of color, appearance, diameter, and inside quality, but higher ones in length and yield of prepared red ginseng. In particular, the levels of ginsenoside $Rg_3$ and $Rh_2$, which are known as specific components in red ginseng, were the highest in 5 years-old roots. The result shows that fresh ginseng of 5 years-old roots produced in Punggi region can be utilized as a raw material for the manufacture of high-quality red ginseng.

Growth Characteristics and Search for Eligible Cultivation Area of Rhodiola sachalinensis A. Boriss. (홍경천의 생육특성검정 및 재배지역 탐색)

  • This study was conducted to search for possible cultivation area of Rhodiola sachalinensis as well as to obtain the basic information of growth characteristics. One­year old nursery plants of Rhodiola sachalinensis were collected from Yonbyeon Hongkyungcheon development society in China This expriment was evaluted in three areas according to sea level such as plain region in Cheongwon(50m at sea level), mid­mountainous region in Jecheon(350m at sea level) mountainous region in Banyans(650m at sea level). The growth status Rhodiola sachalinensis showed wide range of variation in there areas. Plant height showed from 8.1cm to 15.8cm, number of branch showed from 3.1 eachs to 4.6 eachs and rate of withering showed from 76% to 94%, respectively. It was increased rapidly at the early August caused by summer depression. Flowering period of Rhodiola sachalinensis was shown at around middle and late June, total duration of flowering showed from 12 to 13 days and flower colors were various as brown, dark purple, yellow green and brown red color.

Characterization of Species of Cladobotryum which Cause Cobweb Disease in Edible Mushrooms Grown in Korea

  • Four Cladobotryum isolates were collected from four different commercially grown mushroom types infected with cobweb disease in Cheongdo-gun and Chilgok-gun of Gyeongbuk Province, Korea in 2010. The isolates were identified as C. mycophilum from Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus eryngii, C. varium from Flammulina velutipes and Hypsizygus marmoreus. The cultural characteristics of the four isolates were investigated using potato dextrose agar (PDA) media under nine different temperatures ranging from $5{\sim}32^{\circ}C$. Rapid growth of the isolates to colony diameters of 47~82 mm was observed at conditions of $18{\sim}22^{\circ}C$. No growth was observed at $32^{\circ}C$. C. mycophilum produced a yellowish red pigment while C. varium produced a cream colored pigment after cultivation for 25 days on PDA. Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region and partial 28S rDNA from the four isolates confirmed they were C. mycophilum and C. varium. Cross pathogenicity tests revealed that the two isolates of C. mycophilum were highly pathogenic toward three mushroom types, but not toward H. marmoreus. The two isolates of C. varium were less pathogenic than those of C. mycophilum, but were pathogenic toward all mushroom types evaluated.

Relativeness Between Mineral Element of Soil and Occurrence of Tipburn in Chinese Cabbage (토양의 무기성분과 배추의 Tipburn 발생과 관련성)

  • In order to understand the mechanism of the wide occurrence of tipburn phenomenon in Chinese cabbage grown under protected cultivation, Chinese cabbage cultivated in two experimental plots was analyzed based on the distribution of some mineral elements by region in the plant and in the soil. The following results were obtained : 1) The occurrence of tipburn is not related to the concentration of Ca in the soil. 2) The concentration of Ca by region in the plant increased in the order such as inner leaf < middle leaf < outer leaf and inner vein < middle vein < outer vein. 3) From this results the cause of occurrence of tipburn phenomenon in Chinese cabbage which occurred at fixed times in the growth and development of the plant can be controlled by modifying environmental factors in order to prevent excessive transpiration in the inner leaf.

Local Adaptability of Buckwheat Species in Luang Prabang Region, Lao P.D.R

  • The potential cultivation of buckwheat species in Luang Prabang region, Lao PDR where the species has not been naturally grown and not traditionally utilized was studied to introduce buckwheat as a new agricultural material, especially for food and medicine. The growth of Tartary buckwheat species was higher than common buckwheat showing 2.3 fold of plant height compared to common buckwheat. Number of flower per plant in Tartary buckwheat (731) was three fold higher than common buckwheat (244). Dry weight per plant was respectively 1.7 g in Suwon No. 1, 2.6 g in Suwon No. 2, and 1.4 g in KW45. The rate average of seed setting was similar between common buckwheat (41 to 46 %) and Tartary buckwheat (44%). Total seed yield of Tartary buckwheat (184 kg/10 a) in 10a could be estimated to be higher than that of common buckwheat (108 kg/10 a).

  • This presentation highlights the IAHR book, recently published last April, of which the author is the editor-in-chief, on the historical water projects and traditional water technologies of international interest in the Asian region, addressing information on past water projects (mostly before the 20th century) in the regions that are technically and culturally of interest and educationally valuable. The book explores historical water projects in these regions, presenting technologies used at the time, including calculation and forecasting methods, measurement, material, labor, methodologies, and even water culture. Through this book, it is expected that the old Asian wisdom of "reviewing the old and learning the new" would be realized to a certain extent in modern planning and practice of water projects. The book comprises a lead article that the presenter authored and five Parts representing China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, respectively, followed by an invited one from Uzbekistan. Throughout the book, it is found that historically the Asian monsoon, affecting the Indian subcontinent and Southeast and East Asian regions, induced rice cultivation. It fundamentally needs proper irrigation systems, including reservoirs (dams) and canals, water wheels, and even rain gauges. Flood risks have been more common in Asia than Europe under this climate condition, as recognized in history. To utilize and sometimes overcome these climate conditions, people built and managed many historical and grandiose water projects and invented and used localized but sophisticated water-related technologies in the Asian region.
