  • China has been a top producer and exporter of refined lead products in the world since the year 2000. After the phasing-out of leaded gasoline in the late 1990s, non-ferrous metallurgy and coal combustion have been identified as potential major sources of aerosol lead in China. This paper presents the single particle analytical results of ambient aerosol particles collected near a lead smelter using a scanning electron microscopy- energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Aerosol particle samples were collected over a 24-hour period, starting from 8 pm on 31 May 2002, using a high volume TSP sampler. For this near source sample, 73 particles among 377 particles analyzed (accounting for 19.4%) were lead-containing particles mixed with other species (S, Cl, K, Ca, and/or C), which probably appeared to be from a nearby lead smelter. Lead-containing particles of less than $2{\mu}m$ size in the near source sample were most frequently encountered with the relative abundances of 42%. SEM-EDX analysis of individual standard particles, such as PbO, PbS, $PbSO_4$, $PbCl_2$, and $PbCO_3$, was also performed to assist in the clear identification of lead-containing aerosol particles. Lead-containing particles were frequently associated with arsenic and zinc, indicating that the smelter had emitted those species during the non-ferrous metallurgical process. The frequently encountered particles following the lead-containing particles were mineral dust particles, such as aluminosilicates (denoted as AlSi), $SiO_2$, and $CaCO_3$. Nitrate- and sulfate-containing particles were encountered frequently in $2-4{\mu}m$ size range, and existed mostly in the forms of $Ca(NO_3,SO_4)/C$, $(Mg,Ca)SO_4/C$, and $AlSi+(NO_3,SO_4)$. Particles containing metals (e.g., Fe, Cu, and As) in this near source sample had relative abundances of approximately 10%. Although the airborne particles collected near the lead smelter contained elevated levels of lead, other types of particles, such as $CaCO_3$-containing, carbonaceous, metal-containing, nitrates, sulfates, and fly-ash particles, showed the unique signatures of samples influenced by emissions from the lead smelter.

  • The initial NiCuZn synthetic ferrite were acquired from thermally decomposing the metal nitrates Fe($NO_3$)$_3$$9H_2$O, Zn($NO_3$)$_2$$6H_2$O, Ni($NO_3$3)$_2$$6H_2$O and Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$$3H_2$O at 1$50^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and was calcined at $500^{\circ}C$. Each of those was pulverized for 3 and 9 hours in a steel ball mill and was sintered between $700^{\circ}C$ and $1,000^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, and then their microstructures and magnetic properties were examined. We could make the initial specimens chemically bonded in liquid at the temperature as low as $150 ^{\circ}C$, by using the melting points less than $ 200^{\circ}C$ of the metal nitrates instead of the mechanical ball milling, then narrowed a distance between the particles into a molecular level, and thus lowed sintering temperature by at least $200 ^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ Their initial permeability was 50 to 490 and their saturation magnetic induction density and coercive force 2,400G and 0.3 Oe to 1.2 Oe each, which were similar to those of NiCuZn ferrite synthesized in the conventional process.

  • Ion exchange resin particles should not be found in steam generator(S/G) sludge. The suspicious spherical resin particles observed in S/G sludge sample were characterized for particle size distribution under optical microscope using the micro-technique, for element analysis by the electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), and for molecular identification by the IR spectroscopy. The particle sizes are distributed from 1 to $200{\mu}m$ for the sludge, while 40 to $500{\mu}m$ for the spherical resin particles. The results of the elemental analysis showed different major impurities: Si, Al, Mn, Cr, Ni, Zn and Ti for the sludge particles, while Si, Cu, Zn for the spherical resin particles. However, both particles contain Fe as a matrix of magnetite $(Fe_3O_4)$. IR spectrum of the spherical particles was not quite similar to the IR spectrum of ion exchange resins used in S/G system. These results indicate that the spherical particles are not related to ion exchange resin particles and may be formed by the process of the sludge formation.

  • To establish the coating conditions for $^{57}Co$, non-radioactive Co ions are dissolved in an acid solution and electroplated on to a copper plate. Then, the thermal diffusion of electroplated Co into a copper matrix was studied to apply a $^{57}Co$ $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ source. Nanocrystalline Co particles were coated on a Cu substrate using DC electro-deposition at a pH of 1.89 to 5 and $20{\sim}30mA/cm^2$. The average grain size was up to 54 nm as the pH increased to 5. The second phase of Co-oxide was formatted as the pH was increased above 4. The diffusion degree was evaluated by mapping using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of different annealing conditions was investigated. The diffusion depth of Co depends on the annealing temperature and time. The results obtained confirm that the deposited Co diffused almost completely into a copper matrix without substantial loss at an annealing temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours.

  • The improvement of critical current properties of $REBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (REBCO) coated conductors by introducing artificial pinning centers (APCs) is examined with respect to the field-angle anisotropy, high-field performance and relaxation property with time. Nano-rods along the c-axis introduced by PLD method and isotropic nano-particles introduced by TFA-MOD method are treated. The theoretical analysis is also shown to understand the effect of APCs quantitatively. The effects of superconducting layer thickness that influences the high-field performance and relaxation property are also discussed. It is shown that the upper critical field, which is another important factor to determine the high-field property, can be improved by introduction of APCs through electron scattering at interfaces with the superconducting matrix. The optimum critical current property can be obtained by properly designing the morphology and number density of APCs and the superconducting layer thickness.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of impurity level and fabrication processes on the strength, impact and fracture toughness of 7075, 7050 and 7175 aluminum alloy forgings. A specially processed 7175S-T74 aluminum forgings was superior to a conventionally processed 7075-T73, 7050-T74 and 7175-T74 aluminum forgings in both strength and toughness. The reduction of impurity level of iron and silicon has significantly diminished the size and volume fraction of second phase particles such as $Al_7Cu_2Fe$ and $Mg_2Si$. A further reduction of the amount of second phase particles has been observed by applying a special fabrication process. This phenomena result from the application of intermediate soaking at higher temperature and more sufficiant hot working temperature than that of a conventional processing.

  • The technology of wire explosion have been used to product nanopowders. A new concept was proposed to produce metallic nanosized powders, which is wire explosion in liquid media. We have exploded the Ag or Cu wires of diameter of O.3mm, 40mm long, in the de-ionized water or acetone, respectively. Electrical energy of 1.1kJ was stored in 10uF capacitor and released to the wires through a triggered spark gap switch. The process was observed by high-speed camera. Those images showed that the powders were generated by vapor condensation in the shell formed by shock wave in the water. The particles were directly dispersed into the water with collapse of the shell. The sizes of Ag and Cu nanopowders were evaluated to 35nm and 17nm, respectively.

  • We investigated the effects of oxidizer additive on the performance of Cu-CMP process using commonly used tungsten slurry. In order to compare the removal rate and non-uniformity as a function of oxidizer contents, we used alumina-based tungsten slurry and copper blanket wafers deposited by DC sputtering method. According to the CMP removal rates and particle size distribution, and the microstructures of surface layer by SEM image as a function or oxidizer contents were greatly influenced by the slurry chemical composition of oxidizers. The difference in removal rate and roughness of copper surface are believed to cause by modification in the mechanical behavior of $Al_2$O$_3$abrasive particles in CMP slurry.
