  • We evaluated the effect of processing variables on microstructural evolution interface irregularity between Ag sheath and superconductor core and resultant critical current density(J$_{c}$) of (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$(2223) superconductor tape. The value of J$_{c}$ was significantly influenced by the interface irregularity, degree of texturing and relative 2223 content. The interface became more irregular(sausage effect), while the degree of texturing gradually improved as the dimension of tape decreased during forming process. As the dimension of wire/tape were changed from diameter of 3.25 mm to thickness of 0.20 mm, J$_{c}$ value was observed to be increased by 10 times. In addition, optimum sintering temperature for improved J$_{c}$ was observed to be 835$^{\circ}C$ in a ambient atmosphere probably due to combined effect of both improved texturing and high 2223 content. Microstructural investigation showed the degree of texturing was degraded by the existence of both second phases and interface irregularity. It was observed that larger grain size and better texturing was developed near relatively flat interface compared to those inside superconducting core.ting core.

  • To investigate differences in Cu contents in paddy soils and rices, being affected by air pollutants from the Janghang Smelter, soil samples at the different directions and surface (0-15cm) and subsurface (15-30cm) were collected in 1982 and 1990, and rice plants at the soil corresponding sampling sites in 1990 were also at separately collected from the Janghang Smelter area. Soil samples were extracted with $4M-HNO_3$ and plant samples were digested with a mixture of $HNO_3$ and $HClO_4$ for analyzing Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Cu contents in soils ranged from 5.1 to 391.0 mg $kg^{-1}$. The average content of Cu in 1990 was higher than that in 1982. The Cu content in soils nearer to the center of the smelter was higher than that farther from the center. The Cu content was highest at the east direction, and was in order of east > north-north east = north east > north. The variation of Cu levels in soil at east sites was more considerable than other directions. The Cu level in surface soils was higher than that in subsurface soils. The Cu contaminated area was within 5 km at east, and 3 km at north-north east and north east. A significant correlation was found between Cu content in surface soils of 1982 and that in surface and subsurface soils of 1990, and between Cu content in soils and soil properties such as organic matter(OM), available phosphate, available silicate, exchangeable $Ca^{++}$ and $Na^+$ in 1982. The Cu content in brown rice ranged from 0.4 to 3.6 mg $kg^{-1}$, and was the lowest in parts of rice plant, and Cu content in a part of plant was 13.75 times higher than that in brown rice. The Cu content of leaf sheath, stem and brown rice was correlated with the levels of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb in soils. The Cu content in soil regardless of years and soil depths was correlated with Zn and Pb in soil in the area affected by waste gas.

  • The effect of Ag alloy sheath have been investigated in terns of critical current density and mechanical property. Nevertheless the continuous improvement of critical current density($J_c$) of Ag sheathed Bi2223 oxide superconducting wire processed with powder in tube(PIT) method, poor mechanical strength is still considered to be demerits for power application. In this study, we prepared two kinds of Ag- x wt% Cu alloy and pure Ag sheathed Bi2223 superconducting tapes. The hardness and tensile strength of prepared tapes has been measured. Their mechanical propertes were improved by Ag alloying.

  • Effect of alloying element additions to Ag on thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of sheath materials for Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O(BSCCO) tapes has been characterized. The thermal conductivity at low temperature range (10~300K) of Ag and Ag alloys were evaluated by both direct and indirect measurement techniqueas and compared with each other, It was observed that the thermal conductivity decreases with increasing the content of alloying element such as Au, Pd and Mg. Thermal conductivity of pure Ag at 3 0K was measured to be 994.0 W(m.K) on the other hand, the corresponding values of $Ag_{0.9995}Mg_{0.0005}$, $Ag_{0.974}$, $Au_{0.025}$, $Mg_{0.001}$, $Ab_{0.973}$, $Au_{0.025}$, $Mg_{0.002}$ and $Ag_{0.92}$, $Pb_{0.06}$, $Mg_{0.02}$ were 342.6, 62.1, 59.2 and 28.9 W(m.K), respectively, indicating 3 to 30 times lower than that of pure Ag. In addition, the thermal conductivity of pure Ag measured by direct and indirect measurement techniques was 303.2 and 363.8 W(m.K) The difference in this study is considered to be within an acceptable error range compared to the reference data.

  • The contents of heavy metals in soil near the Janghang smelter area were observed to understand present status and relationship between their fraction and the absorption by rice. The soil samples were taken from the eight sites of the paddy fields in 1982 and 1990, and analysis on heavy metals including Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb was performed. The results were as follows: Total contents of heavy metals in the samples of 1990 were higher than those of 1982. The order of increasing ratio was Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd and the variation of Cd content by sequential differente extracting was residual > exchangeable > dilute acid-extractable fractions and its increasing range was from 38 to 71% during nine years. The ratio of immobile heavy metals bound within an oxide or silicate matrix of Fe-Mn oxide bound and residual in surface soil was that Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were 31.65, 42.22, 76.57 and 79.49%, respectively, and their mobile ratios of exchangeable, dilute acid-extractable and organically bound were more than 20.28%. Those of mobile Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were 68.35, 55.78, 23.43 and 20.28%, respectively. Correlation between the heavy metal contents in surface soil and those in tissue of rice plant, such as leaf blade, leaf sheath, stem and panicle axis, were significant, but were not significant in subsurface soil. The dilute acid-extractable and organically bound fractions of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in surface soil were more significantly correlated with those in tissues of paddy rice.

  • We evaluated the degree of texture through depth of the superconductor core of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O(BSCCO) superconductor tape. The degree of texture was characterized by pole figure analysis indicating that the degree of texture varied significantly with depth of the superconductor core. It was observed that the degree of texture was higher near the interface than inside the superconductor core. Specifically, as getting near to the center from the sheath/core interface, the orientation of BSCCO became dispersed from normal direction(ND) which, in turn, resulted in the degradation of <001>-fiber texture. In addition, the <001> texture was non-uniform an, better texture was developed along rolling direction(RD), compared to transverse direction(TD). Microstructural investigation showed that grain alignment was locally degraded by the existence of second phases. I was observed that larger grain size and better texturing were developed near the relatively straight interface compared to those inside the superconducting core. Based on our study, the region near the interface is thought to carry significant current compared to that inside the core.

  • A new convenient magnet array module is designed to investigate effects of magnetic field array on magnetron discharge characteristics. Magnetic field analysis showed good agreement of measured discharge region by a CCD device which has a high quantum efficiency over visible wavelength range. OES (optical emission spectroscopy) showed major emission peaks are from electronic transitions in 400 nm range and 800 nm range. Effects of driving voltage characteristics were analyzed in a point of electron drift trajectories and ionizing collision frequencies. Pulsed dc with a fast rising and falling time was analyzed to have potential to increase ionization collisions by putting a burst of hot electrons and to raise sheath potential. From measured voltage and current waveform, maximum of -1000 V peak was generated with $-400\;V_{rms}$ conditions. Possibility of a properly designed magnetron cathode was shown to be used as a melting device. Cu was successfully melted with power density of a several tens of $W/cm^2$.

The Cd and Zn contents in soils ranged from 0.09 to 4.42 and from 16.0 to 959.5mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively. The average contents of Cd and Zn in 1990 were higher than those in 1982. The Cd and Zn contents of soils near the center of the smelter were higher than those of soils farther from the center and also decreased in the order of east > north-north east > north east > north. The Cd and Zn levels in surface soils were higher than those in subsurface soils. The contaminated areas of Cd and Zn were within 4km in the east, and within 3km in the north-north east and the north east. Metal contents in brawn rice were the lowest in rice plants. The Cd content of brown rice was one sixth of that in leaf blade and in leaf sheath. The Cd content of leaf blade, stem and panicle axis were significantly correlated with the levels of Zn, Cu and Pb in soils, and Zn content of stem was significantly correlated with the levels of Cu and Pb. The Cd and Zn content in brown rice ranged from 0.05 to 0.25mg $kg^{-1}$ and from 10.5 to 30.9㎎ $kg^{-1}$ in the smelter area, respectively.

  • To investigate differences in lead contents of paddy soils and rice plants affected by municipal and industrial waste water pollution in Mangyeong River area, soil and plants samples were collected in 1982 and 1990 according to the distances from the main inlet source and depths of soil. Soil samples were extracted with ${4H-HNO}_3$ and plant sampler were digested with mixture of ${HNO}_3$ and ${HCIO}_4$ for analyzing by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Pb contents in soils ranged from 13.2 to 56.4 mg $kg^{-1}$. Average Pb level in 1990 was some higher than that in 1982. Variation of Pb content with the distances from the source of waste water showed decreasing tendency wish distances, and it was clearer in 1990 than in 1982. A significant correlation was observed between Pb contents in surface and in subsurface soil, between Pb content in soils and soil properties as clay, OM, and $Ca^{++}$ in 1982, and between Pb content in soils and contents of Cu and Zn in soils. The average Pb content in leaf sheath was 3.42 times of that in brown rice. Pb content in brown rice ranged from 3.1 to 10.4mg $kg^{-1}$.
