The eutectic solder Sn-37Pb and the lead free solder alloys with the compositions of Sn-0.7Cu, Sn-3.5Ag, Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu, Sn-2.0Ag-0.7Cu-3.0Bi were applied to the 48 BGA packages, and then it was discussed for the shear strength at the solder joints as the hardness and the composition of the small solder ball. As a result of experiments, the high degree of hardness with the displacement of 0.043 mm was obtained in Sn-2.0Ag-0.7Cu-3.0Bi. The shear strength of the lead free solder was higher than that of Sn-37Pb solder, and it can be obtained the maximum value of about 52% in Sn-2.0Ag-0.7Cu-3.0Bi.
The surface properties after plasma etching of Al(Si, Cu) solutions using the chemistries of chlorinated and fluorinated gases with varying the etching time have been investigated using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Impurities of C, Cl, F and O etc are observed on the etched Al(Si, Cu) films. After 95% etching, aluminum and silicon show metallic states and oxized (partially chlorinated) states, copper shows Cu metallic states and Cu-Clx(x$CuCl_x$ (x$CuCl_x$ (1
The physical property and phase transformation in a commercial dental casting high gold alloy was investigated as a function of ageing temperature and time using microvickers hardness tester, X-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy and EPMA analyser. 1. With increasing ageing time, the hardness of solution-treated gold alloys increased slowly at the initial stage of ageing treatment at an ageing temperature of $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, and it reached a maximum value of hardness at the medium stage. Finally, it decreased gradually during further ageing. The maximum value of hardness at was similar with that of the conventional materials and suitable for using as the crown & bridge. 2. During isothermal ageing at a temperature range of $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, three phases consisting of the Au-rich ${\alpha}_1$phase with a face-centered cubic structure, the Pt3Zn ${\alpha}_2$phase with an ordered AuCu3(L12) type(f.c.c.) and the Pt-rich ${\alpha}_3$phase with face-centered cubic structure in solution-treated gold alloys were transformed into different three phases consisting of the ${\alpha}_1$phase, the ${\alpha}_3$phase and the PtZn $\beta$phase with an ordered AuCu I(L10) type. 3. The hardening of gold alloys was attributed to the lattice strains of the matrix resulting from the transformation of the ${\alpha}_2$phase to the $\beta$phase. 4. The softening of gold alloys during over-ageing was attributed to the coarsening of the nodules consisting of the $\beta$phase and ${\alpha}_1$matrix.
Porous hybrid preforms were fabricated by reactive sintering using the compacts consisting of SiC particles, Fe and Al powders. Squeeze casting processing was employed to produce the composite in which the matrix phase is Al-Si7Mg. The microstructural change and wear resistance of the composites were investigated in terms of an amount of SiC particles. The wear loss was increased with increasing the contact pressure in the alloy containing SiC particles coated with Cu. The most drastic change was found to the specimen tested at 2.5 MPa of contact pressure. Concerning the alloys containing SiC particles coated with Ni-P, a drastic increase in the wear loss exhibited at 2 MPa of contact pressure in those alloys containing 4 and 8 wt. % of SiC particles coated with Ni-P. In the alloy containing 16 wt. % a proportional increase in wear loss was observed to the change of contact pressure. With respecting to the sliding velocity, the wear loss of the alloy containing SiC particles coated with Cu increased at the initial stage of wear process and then decreased. Similar result was found in the alloys containing SiC particles coated with Ni-P. On the basis of the present results obtained, it was found that wear resistance of the alloys tested was improved to show in the order of the alloy reinforced by coated SiC particles > by uncoated SiC particles > by intermetallic compound without SiC particles.

Al-Si piston alloys such as AlS10CuMg have been anodized to examine apossibility of forming a hard film aat relatively higher temperatures compard with those in conventional sulfuric acid processes. Three types of electrolytes have been employed in this study ; electrolyte A(15% H2SO4, $0^{\circ}C$), electrolyte B(12% H2SO4, 1% oxalic, $10^{\circ}C$), electrolyte C(tartaric acid 125g/L+oxalic 75g/L+aluminum sulfate 225g/L, $25^{\circ}C$). Hard anodisine process in electrolyte B at a current density of 1.54A/dm2 produced a harder film of VHN 396 at a relatibely low film forming voltage compared with those obtained in other electrolyte at equivalent current density. A liner relationship between hardness and abrasion resistance exists for Al-Si piston alloys. The hardness of anodized film decreasees with increasing silicon content in Al-Si alloys and also with bath temperature. The film hardeness of Na-modified alloy os higher than that of P-modified alloy due to its finer microstructre. The film on the silicon phase in Al-Si alloys is observed to be formed by lateral growth of oxide film nucleated at surroundings.
Al-based alloys have recently attracted considerable interest as structural materials and light weight materials due to their excellent physical and mechanical properties. For the investigation of the potential of Al-based alloys, a surface porous $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy has been fabricated through a chemical leaching process. The formation and microstructure of the surface porous $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy is composed of an ${\alpha}$-Al dendrite phase and a single eutectic phase of $Al_2Cu$ and ${\alpha}$-Al. We intended to remove only the ${\alpha}$-Al phase and then the $Al_2Cu$ phase would form a porous structure on the surface with open pores. Both acidic and alkaline aqueous chemical solutions were used with various concentrations to modify the influence on the microstructure and the overall chemical reaction was carried out for 24 hr. A homogeneous open porous structure on the surface was revealed via selective chemical leaching with a $H_2SO_4$ solution. Only the ${\alpha}$-Al phase was successfully leached while the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase was maintained. The pore size was in a range of $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$ and the dealloying depth was nearly $3{\mu}m$. However, under an alkaline NaOH, aqueous solution, an inhomogeneous porous structure on the surface was formed with a 5 wt% NaOH solution and the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase was not preserved. In addition, the sample that was leached by using a 7 wt% NaOH solution crumbled. Al extracted from the Al2Cu phase as ${\alpha}$-Al phase was dealloyed, and increasing concentration of NaOH strongly influenced the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase and sample statement.
The oxidation behavior of Ag-36.8a%Cu-7.4at%Ti alloy brazed on Si3N4 substrate was investigated at 400, 500 and 600$^{\circ}C$ in air. Under this experimental condition Si3N4 and Ag were not oxidized whereas Cu and Ti among the brazing alloy components were oxidizied obeying the parabolic oxidation rate law. The activation energy of oxidation was found to be 80kj/ mol which was smaller than that of pure Cu owing to the presence of oxygen active element of Ti. The outer oxide scale formed from the initial oxidation state was always composed of Cu oxides which were known to be growing by the outward diffusion of Cu ions. As the oxidation progressed the concentration gradient occurred due to the continuous consumption of Cu as Cu oxides and consequently build-up of an Ag-enriched layer below the Cu oxides resulted in the formation of multiple oxide scales composed of Cu oxide (CuO) /Ag-enriched layer/Cu oxide (Cu2O) /Ag-enriched layer. Also the inward diffusing of oxygen through Cu oxide and Ag-enriched layers led to the formation of internal oxides of TiO2.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the surface treatment and shape of the dental alloy on the composition of the prosthetic work and its metallic ion release in a corrosive medium after casting. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Orion Argos (Pd-Ag) and Orion Vesta (Pd-Cu) were used to cast two crowns and two disks. One of each was polished while the other was not. Two as-received alloys were also studied making a total of 5 specimens per alloy type. The specimens were submersed for 7 days in a lactic acid/sodium chloride solution (ISO standard 10271) and evaluated for surface structure characterization using SEM/EDAX. The solutions were quantitatively analysed for the presence of metal ions using ICP-MS and the results were statistically analysed with one-way ANOVA and a Tukey post-hoc test. RESULTS. Palladium is released from all specimens studied (range $0.06-7.08{\mu}g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}week^{-1}$), with the Pd-Cu alloy releasing the highest amounts. For both types of alloys, ion release of both disk and crown pairs were statistically different from the as-received alloy except for the Pd-Ag polished crown (P>.05). For both alloy type, disk-shaped pairs and unpolished specimens released the highest amounts of Pd ions (range $0.34-7.08{\mu}g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}week^{-1}$). Interestingly, in solutions submerged with cast alloys trace amounts of unexpected elements were measured. CONCLUSION. Shape and surface treatment influence ion release from dental alloys; polishing is a determinant factor. The release rate of cast and polished Pd alloys is between $0.06-0.69{\mu}g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}week^{-1}$, which is close to or exceeding the EU Nickel Directive 94/27/EC compensated for the molecular mass of Pd ($0.4{\mu}g{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}week^{-1}$). The composition of the alloy does not represent the element release, therefore we recommend manufacturers to report element release after ISO standard corrosion tests beside the original composition.
