  • The complexation of bilirubin with zinc(II) and copper(II) ions was studied spectrophotometrically. In the zinc(II)-bilirubin (Zn-BR) system, complex is formed, but the copper(II) ion oxidizes bilirubin to biliverdin and then to the further oxidation products. The electrochemical reduction behavior of ZN-BR complex has been investigated with DC polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The three polarographic waves were obtained for the reduction of ZN-BR complex in DMF solution. Thde reduction current of the third wave was diffusion current, but that of the first and the second waves contained a little kinetic current.

  • This study carried out to investigate the removal capacity of heavy metals such as Cu (II), Zn (II) and Cd (II) dissolved in aqueous solution in the soils collected from Hyeon-Dong (HD), San-seong (SS), Keum-chon (KC) and Keum-Hac (KH) located in the upper Banbyun stream. The pH of all the soils was weak alkali such as 8.8 9.2. According to the analysis of chemical composition of the soils, the amount of $SiO_2$, $AlO_2$ and CaO were similar in all tested soils. However, the amount of $K_2O$, $FeO_3$ and MgO were different from each soil. The XRD measurement with these soils showed that quartz and feldspar were presented in all tested soils, and the distribution of kaoline, illite, montmorillonite, vermiculite and calcite were different from each soil. The results of the removal capacity of heavy metals indicated that all the soils had more than 98% of the removal efficiency of Cu (II), Zn (II) and Cd (II), and among the heavy metals, Cu (II) was removed the most effectively. These results suggested that the soils collected from the upper Banbyun stream have the high removal capacity of heavy metals, and these soils could be used for the banking a river around the abandoned mine area, containing the higher concentrations of heavy metals than the usual stream.

  • New series of metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) with 4-(p-chlorophenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)thiosemicarbazide (HCPTS) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moment, spectra (IR, UV-Vis, $^1H$ NMR, mass and ESR) and thermal studies. The IR data suggest different coordination modes for HCPTS which behaves as a monobasic bidentate with all metal ions except Cu(II) and Zn(II) which acts as a monobasic tridentate. Based on the electronic and magnetic studies, Co(II), Cu(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes have square - planner, Ni(II) has mixed stereochemistry (tetrahedral + square planar), while Zn(II) is tetrahedral. Molar conductance in DMF solution indicates the non-ionic nature of the complexes. The ESR spectra of solid copper(II) complex show $g_{\parallel}$ (2.2221) > $g_{\perp}$ (2.0899) > 2.0023 indicating square-planar structure and the presence of the unpaired electron in the $d_x2_{-y}2$ orbital with significant covalent bond character. The thermal stability and degradation kinetics of the ligand and its metal complexes were studied by TGA and DTA and the kinetic parameters were calculated using Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. The complexes have more antibacterial activity against some bacteria than the free ligand. However, the ligand has high anticancer activities against HCT116 (human colon carcinoma cell line) and HEPG2 (human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line) compared with its complexes.

  • Cyclic voltammetric measurements were performed for Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of 1 : 1 alternating copolymer, poly(3-nitrobenzylidene-1-naphthylamine-co-succinic anhydride) (L) and Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of 1 : 1 alternating copolymer, poly(3-nitrobenzylidene-1-naphthylamine-co-methacrylic acid) ($L^1$). The in vitro biological screening effects of the investigated compounds were tested against the fungal species including Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizoctonia bataicola and Candida albicans and bacterial species including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumaniae, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by well diffusion method. A comparative study of inhibition values of the copolymers and their complexes indicates that the complexes exhibit higher antimicrobial activity. Copper ions are proven to be essential for the growth-inhibitor effect. The extent of inhibition appeared to be strongly dependent on the initial cell density and on the growth medium. The nuclease activity of the above metal complexes were assessed by gel electrophoresis assay and the results show that the copper complexes can cleave pUC18 DNA effectively in presence of hydrogen peroxide compared to other metal complexes. The degradation experiments using Rhodamine B dye indicate that the hydroxyl radical species are involved in the DNA cleavage reactions.

  • Some new metal(II) complexes, $M^{II}L_2$ [M = Mn (1), Co (2), Ni (3), Cu (4), and Zn (5)] of 2-acetylpyridine benzoylhydrazone ligand (HL) containing trifunctional NNO-donor system have been synthesized and crystallographically characterized for the complex 1 and 5. The complexes consist of two ligands to give sixcoordinate, which are bonded to the metal atom on a meridional plane through acetylpyridine ring nitrogen, azomethine nitrogen, and benzoyl oxygen atoms, respectively. The coordination geometry for other complexes was identified on the basis of the physicochemical data by elemental analyses, FAB -MS, IR, $^1H$ NMR, and electronic spectral measurements. The resulting data indicated that the complexes are accordance with the above formulation.

  • Polydentate Schiff base ligands 5-Br-BSDT(bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde)diethylenetriamine) having $N_3O_2$ atoms, 5-Br-BSTT(bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde)triethylenetetramine) having $N_3O_2$ atoms, 5-Br-BSTP(bis(5-bromosalicylaldehyde)tetraethylenepentamine) having $N_3O_2$ atoms were synthesized. Stability constants of the complexes between these ligands and the metal ions such as Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) were measured in DMSO by a polarographic method. It was observed that all metal(II) ions employed in this study formed 1 : 1 complexes with Schiff base ligands. Stability constants for the ligands were in the order of Cu(II)>Ni(II)>Zn(II), and for complex formation were in the order of 5-Br-BSTP>5-Br-BSTT>5-Br-BSDT according to the increasing in the number of donor atoms. Both enthalpy and entropy changes are obtained in negative valves. Exothermicity for the complex formation indicated tight binding between the ligands and metal ions. The negative entropy change would be related to the fact that solvent molecules are strongly interacting with the metal complexes.

  • Suitability of aluminium-based water treatment sludge (WTS), a waste product from water treatment facilities, was assessed for removal of heavy metals from an electroplating wastewater which had high concentrations of copper and chromium along with other heavy metals. Batch tests with simulated wastewater in single- and multi-metal solutions indicated the influence of initial pH and WTS dose on removal of six metals namely Cu(II), Co(II), Cr(VI), Hg(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II). In general, removal of cationic metals such as Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) increased with increase in pH while that of anionic Cr(VI) showed a reduction with increased pH values. Tests with multi-metal solution showed that the influence of competition was more pronounced at lower WTS dosages. Column test with diluted (100 times) real electroplating wastewater showed complete removal of copper up to 100 bed volumes while chromium removal ranged between 78-92%. Other metals which were present in lower concentrations were also effectively removed. Mass balance for copper and chromium showed that the WTS media had Cu(II) and Cr(VI) sorption capacities of about 1.7 and 3.5 mg/g of dried sludge, respectively. The study thus indicates that WTS has the potential to be used as a filtration/adsorption medium for removal of metals from metal-bearing wastewaters.

  • Heavy metal concentrations (Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II)) at field and upland soils were investigated with two extraction methods, 0.1mole L$^{-1}$ HCI extraction and HNO$_3$-HCIO$_4$ digestion, in order to estimate soil pollution and to understand their distribution and accumulation characteristics. Through an application of 0.1mole L$^{-1}$ HCI extraction method, the surface horizons of field soils were found to have higher concentrations of heavy metals (except Pb(II)) than those of upland soil. It was also seen that Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) were enriched in surface horizon of field soils, whereas upland soils did not show much difference across depth. When the method of HNO$_3$-HCIO$_4$ digestion was used, upland soils showed higher concentrations than those of other soils, and the distribution of heavy metals did not show much difference between horizons of all soils. From these results, it was recognized that, although total natural contents of heavy metals were the largest in upland soil, surface horizons of field soils became gradually polluted with heavy metals. Especially, Cd(II) is considered as a potential metallic pollutant in field soils because of its weak adsorption strength. Concentrations of heavy metals also seemed to be influenced by their adsorption characteristics. When we computed 0.1HCl$_{ext}$HNCL$_{dig}$ ratios to estimate the adsorption strengths of soil heavy metals, their adsorption strengths decreased on the order of Cu(II) > Zn(II)> Pb(II) > Cd(II). The distribution characteristics of heavy metals in field soil, especially Cd(II),are required more detail study because of its importance of land use and complicated mobilization characteristic.

  • It is shown that the impurities of Cu(II), Pb(II), Zn(II) and Ag(I) in Bismuth metal and the components of Pb(II), Zn(II) and Sn(IV) in Bismuth alloy are separated into their components from each other by elutions through $3.14cm^2{\times}10cm$ cation exchange resin, $Dowex\;50w\;{\times}\;8$ (100~200 mesh), column with the mixed solutions of HAc and NaAc as the eluents. The elution curve of Fe(III) has a long tailing and is not separated quantitatively from Bi(III). The eluents used for this separation are as follows; 1M HAc + 0.1M NaAc (pH 3.36) for Fe(III) and Bi (III). 0.3M HAc + 0.3M NaAc (pH 4.70) for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II). 0.5M HAc + 0.5M NaAc (pH4.70) for Ag(I) and Sn(IV). The analysis of cations eluted are carried out by spectrophotometry and EDTA titrimetry. Their recoveries are more than 99%.

  • The open-chain hexadentate N$_4$, O$_2$ ligands 1,13-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-2,5,9,12-tetraazatridecane-tetrahydrochloride (BSATD${\cdot}$4HCl) and 1,14-bis (2-hydroxybenzyl)-2,6,9,12-tetraazatetradecane-tetrahydrochloride (BSATED${\cdot}$ 4HCl) have been synthesized as their tetrahydrochloride salt and characterized by EA, IR, NMR and Mass. Their proton dissociation constants(log$K^{n}_{H}$) and stability constants(log$K_{ML}$) for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) ions were determined in aqueous solution by potentiometry and compared with those of analogous N$_4$, O$_2$ ligands contain ethylenic spacers or propylenic spacers, which make six-membered chelate rings between the aliphatic nitrogen atoms. Synthesis and characterization of [Cu(BSATD)]ClO$_4$ and [Cu(BSATED)](ClO$_4$)$_2$ complexes are described.
