  • The solidification sequence and formation of intermetallic phase of Fe-rich Al-Si-Cu alloy were investigated by using real-time imaging of synchrotron X-ray radiation. Effects of cooling rate during uni-directional solidification on the resultant solidification behavior was also studied in a specially constructed vacuum chamber in the SPring-8 facility. The series of radiographic images were complementarily analyzed with conventional analysis of OM and SEM/EDX for phase identification. Detailed solidification sequence and formation mechanisms of various phases were discussed based on real-time image analysis. The growth rates of $\alpha$-AlFeMnSi and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ were measured in order to understand the growth behavior of each phase. It is suggested that real-time imaging technique can be a powerful tool for the precise understanding of solidification behavior of various industrial materials.

  • This study reports on the synthesis of carbon nanofibers via chemical vapor deposition using Co and Cu as catalysts. In order to investigate the suitability of their catalytic activity for the growth of nanofibers, we prepared catalysts for the synthesis of carbon nanofibers with Cobalt nitrate and Copper nitrate, and found the optimum concentration of each respective catalyst. Then we made them react with Aluminum nitrate and Ammonium Molybdate to form precipitates. The precipitates were dried at a temperature of $110^{\circ}C$ in order to be prepared into catalyst powder. The catalyst was sparsely and thinly spread on a quartz tube boat to grow carbon nanofibers via thermal chemical vapor deposition. The characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were analyzed through SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, XPS, and TG/DTA, and the specific surface area was measured via BET. Consequently, the characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were greatly influenced by the concentration ratio of metal catalysts. In particular, uniform carbon nanofibers of 27 nm in diameter grew when the concentration ratio of Co and Cu was 6:4 at $700^{\circ}C$ of calcination temperature; carbon nanofibers synthesized under such conditions showed the best crystallizability, compared to carbon nanofibers synthesized with metal catalysts under different concentration ratios, and revealed 1.26 high amorphicity as well as $292m^2g^{-1}$ high specific surface area.

  • We report on the tunneling spectroscopy of tunnel junctions using d-wave superconductor in relation to Andreev reflection. The zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) which has maximum on [110] direction of ab-plane is observed on metal $Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ tunnel junctions while it is suppressed on the ferromagnetic $Co/Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ tunnel junctions. The effects of Andreev reflection on the differential conductance of each junction are dependent on the tunnel direction. For the $Co/Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ junction, the suppression of Andreev reflection takes place by spin-polarized quasiparticles tunneling from a ferromagnetic material to a d-wave superconductor. By comparing these experimental results with recent theoretical works on Andreev reflection, the existence of Andreev bound state due to the d-wave symmetry of the pair potential is verified in high-$T_c$ superconductor.

  • We have investigated the Josephson vortex dynamics in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O{8+\delta}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions subjected to a magnetic field parallel to $CuO_2$ planes. We investigated mesas with $40\times40{\mu}m^2$ in size and containing 6 and 20. intrinsic junctions. The zero field I-V characteristics exhibited a typical hysteretic, multi-branched nature of the intrinsic Josephson effect. At high magnetic fields (H>1.5 T), I-V characteristics showed flux flow steps. The Swihart velocity obtained from this observation was about $4.2\times10^5$ m/s, which was the lowest mode electromagnetic wave velocity of N coupled stack. The experimental I-V curves fitted well into the simple model of Cherenkov radiation including Ohmic and non-linear dissipation terms. This suggests that the dissipation mechanism of Josephson vortex be due to both Cherenkov radiation and quasiparticle tunneling current.

  • The energy transfer between two incident beams in a photorefractive Cu-doped(0.04 wt. %) ${(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})}_{0.2}{(Sr_{0.61}Ba_{0.39})}_{0.9}Nb_2O_6$ crystal is investigated at 632.8 nm laser wavelength. In addition, the coherent two-wave coupling properties of a photoinduced refractive-index grating in the presence of amplitude modulation on the signal beam or reference beam are also experimentally investigated. Some preliminary exprimental results are presented for use as a dynamic photorefracitive combiners and pulse shaping elements in coherent optical communication systems and in optical signal processing.

  • The SrS:Cu, Ag thin film electroluminescient devices were fabricated on $AlTiO_3$/ITO/glass substrates by electron-beam evaporation. The emission spectrum of the device was about 460 nm with $\chi$=0.20, y=0.29 in the CIE color coordinator. It was found that the emission spectrum was saturated to pure blue color when Ag sensitizer was doped in SrS:CuCl phosphors. The luminance of the device was increased by increasing the sulfur pressure. The measured luminance was saturated with 430 cd/$m^2$at the applied voltage of 90 V and the maximum luminance was 580 cd/$m^2$at 110V. The polarization charge and conduction charge of the devices were found to be found to be about $3.5\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and $7.4\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively.

  • The studies on the adsorption properties and the antibacterial effects of the Cd and Cu-treated activated carbon were carried out. From the adsorption studies on the series of these metal-treated activated carbons, typical Type-I isotherm was observed. The surface areas of the treated carbon obtained from BET equation were in the range of $1101-1418m^2/g$ for Cd-AC and of $1084-1361m^2/g$ for Cu-AC. Using ${\alpha}_s$-plot, the micropore volumes and pore size distribution were obtained. From the SEM study, it is also observed that many of micropores in activated carbon are blocked by window blocking effect of metals after the impregnation. Finally, antibacterial effects of M-activated carbon against Escherichia coli was discussed. From the study, the area of antibacterial activity becomes larger with the increase of the amount of metal treated.

  • NiFe($60\;{\AA}$)/Cu($60\;{\AA}$)/Co($30\;{\AA}$) trilayers were formed on the $4^{\circ}$ tilt-cut Si(111) substrate by rf magnetron sputtering method. With a Cu($50\;{\AA}$) underlayer, NiFe($60\;{\AA}$)/Cu($60\;{\AA}$)/Co($30\;{\AA}$) trilayers developed in-plane magnebc anisotropy and in-plane perpendicular alignment of easy axes in two magnetic components of NiFe($60\;{\AA}$)/Cu($60\;{\AA}$)/Co($30\;{\AA}$) trilayers has been found. The easy axis of Co layer consisbng of NiFe($60\;{\AA}$)/Cu($60\;{\AA}$)/Co($30\;{\AA}$) trilayers turned out to be along $4^{\circ}$ tilt Si <112> direcbon and that of NiFe layer along Si <110> direction. [NiFe($60\;{\AA}$)/Cu($60\;{\AA}$)/Co($30\;{\AA}$)]/Cu($50\;{\AA}$)/Si(111, $4^{\circ}$ tiIt-cut) trilayers showed about 2.2 % MR ratio at room temperature and large plateau in MR curves, which are more improved MR characteristics than those in [NiFe($60\;{\AA}$)/Cu($60\;{\AA}$)/Co($30\;{\AA}$)]/Cu($50\;{\AA}$)/glass trilayers with no appreciable magnetic anisotropy.

  • The relationships among physical growth, dietary intakes, and Zn & Cu status were investigated in total of 128 eight-year-old children selected from the primary school in Seoul. The mean weight and height were 28.3Kg and 129.6cm and the average BMI and R hrer index were 16.75 and 129.25. These values were a little higher than the ones for the average Korean children at the same age. The average serum Zn & Cu levels were 109.98$\mu\textrm{g}$/100ml and 84.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. About 2.4% of the subjects had blood Zn level below the normal range and 8.6% had above the normal level. For Cu, about 43% of the subjects fell into the subnormal level. Daily dietary intakes of calorie, protein and ascorbic acid were relatively adequate but Fe, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin were insufficient. Ca and vitamin A intakes were very poor. More than 50% of the subjects onsumed Ca and vitamin A less then 2/3 of RDA. There was no consistant relationship among the serum Zn and Cu levels, growth, and the nutrients intakes. But it was observed that serum Zn contents were higher as consumption of milks, fats and oil groups were high in the serum Zn contents were higher as consumption of milks, fats and oil groups were high in the several BMI groups, and lower in taller and heavier children within the group of 110-119% BMI rate. Therefore, it could be summarized that the Zn status of the children was favorable but the Cu status was inadequate. Serum Zn and Cu levels were found to be related to the overall quality and/or the quantity of diet and physical growth pattern of children.
