  • Finite element calculations are performed for crystalline solids subjected to plane strain tensile loading. Using Asaro's double slop model, shearband developments in single crystals are analyzed. The effect of various rate sensitivities and latent hardening parameters on microscopic plastic behavior was clarified. Moreover the deformation behavior of polycystals which have grain boundaries was compared to that of single crystals.

  • Single crystals of Yttrium Calcium Oxyborate (YCOB) doped with different concentrations of Er3+ and Yb3+ ions were growth by Czochralski method. High qualities of crystals in morphology and transparency were obtained . Analysis on crystal structure and lattice parameters were performed by X-ray diffraction method. It was found that congruent melting composition is YCA4.2O1.2(BO3)3. Absorption and fluorescence properties of grown crystals were also reported.

Growth of Rutile Single Crystal by Floating Zone Method (Floating Zone법에 의한 Rutile($TiO_2$)단결정 육성)

  • Rutile(TiO2) single crystals were grown by FZ method. Feed rod was sintered in the longitudinal tube-shaped furnace at 135$0^{\circ}C$ and optimum growth condition was growth rate 5-8mm/hr, rotation rate 30-40rpm. When crystal was growing, atomosphere was oxidized condition, and grown single crystal was annealed at 110$0^{\circ}C$. The rutile single crystals were oriented to [001] direction and color change of single crystals were related to atmosphere, and difference of electric conductivity and resistance was due to the fact above.

  • Cholesteric liquid crystals are one dimensional photonic band-gap materials due to their birefringence and periodic structure. Dye doped cholesteric liquid crystals are self-assembling, mirror-less, low threshold laser structures that exhibit distributed feedback. In this review paper, we have presented the development in the field of lasing characteristics of dye doped cholesteric liquid crystals.

The Influence of Oxygen on Czochralski Growth of Oxide Single Crystals

  • When grown the oxide single crystal including Li-ion, optimum oxygen condition is needed. Color and crack are caused in single crystal according too the change in the condition of the oxygen. LiTaO₃ crystals grown from off-composition of congruent melt composition under oxygen deficieny condition didn't generate any crack. LiNbO₃. LiTaO₃ crystals grown from congruent melt composition under optimum oxygen condition caused pale yellow color or colorless with no crack. Color gradually became colorless and generated cracks according to Oxygen excess.

  • In suite of their superior optical and laser properties rare-earth orthovanadate single crystals have not been adopted yet into extensive industrial applications because of crystal growth difficulties. The edge-defined film-fed-growth (EFG) technique was applied successfully for the production of such crystals. At first time 1 inch $LuVO_4$ single crystals were grown by the EFG technique using newly developed die construction of high porous iridium with the application of automatic diameter control system.

  • The precipitation of ultra fine ammonium perchlorate(UFAP) crystals from the N-methyl pyrrolidone(NMP) solutions of ammonium perchlorate(AP) was studied. The characteristics of the precipitated crystals were investigated by means of scanning electron micrograph(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). When chloroform, methylene chloride and toluene were the precipitants, the product crystals had a mean particle size less than 2$\mu\textrm{m}$. The crystallographical property and thermal decomposition behavior of the prepared UFAP were almost the same as those of the commercial AP.

  • Optical absorption and photoconductivity spectra of undoped and Co-doped Cd$_{4}$GeSe$_{6}$ single crystals, grown by the chemical transport reaction using iodine as a transporting agent, were investigated. At 20K, the optical energy gaps of the single crystals are 1.934eV for Cd$_{4}$GeSe$_{6}$ and 1.815eV for Cd$_{4}$GeSe$_{6}$ :Co$^{2+}$. The photoconductivity spectra of these single crystals were closely investigated over the temperature range 20-290K. At 20K, the photoconductivity peaks were located at 1.797eV, 1.347eV for Cd$_{4}$GeSe$_{6}$ and 1.815eV, I,.57eV, 1.46eV and 1.38eV for Cd$_{4}$GeSe$_{6}$ :Co$^{2+}$, respectively.ely.

Measurement of Heat Transfer Coefficient in a Duct with Double Imingement Jets (이중 충돌 제트를 갖는 내부 유로의 열전달 계수 측정)

  • Averaged heat transfer coefficients in the trailing edge model of a turbine blade with double impingements were measured using transient liquid crystals technique and conventional copper plate-thermocouple technique. The detailed distributions of heat transfer coefficients by transient liquid crystals technique were also presented. Results showed that increased heat transfer coefficient due to the inpingements and the averaged heat transfer coefficients increased as Reynolds number increased. Results by transient liquid crystals technique showed that the heat transfer coefficient strongly depended on the main stream temperature used in heat transfer coefficient calculation. The averaged heat transfer coefficients measured by different methods showed similar trend as Reynolds number changed, but the value varied up to 40% depending on the measurement technique.
