Tencel fabrics were treated with cellulase after mechanical prefibrillation treatment. SEM analysis was carried out to study morphological change of the treated fabric. The cellulase-treated Tencel fabrics were evaluated for weight loss and tensile strength. X-ray diffraction method, moisture regain, and K/S value were used to elucidate crystalline structural changes occurred by cellulase treatment. Degree of polymerization and copper number of the cellulase-treated fabrics were also measured to estimate effect of hydrolysis. SEM analysis indicated that with treatment of prefibrillation and cellulase, fibrils were produced and damage occurred deep into the fiber. Increases in concentration and time of cellulase treatment increased weight loss and decreased tensile strength retention of the treated fabrics. As cellulase hydrolysis progressed, degree of crystallinity, moisture regain and K/S value were not much changed. (Korean J Human Ecology 2(1) : 142∼148, 1999)

Potato starches were hydroxypropylated with 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0% propylene oxide(PO) to improve mechanical properties of starch polyethylene film. Starch polyethylene cast films were prepared that contained 5% or 10% of the hydroxypropylated potato starch. Mechanical properties of these films were measured and compared to those of the films containing native potato starch. DS(degree of substitution) increased proportionally as propylene oxide concentration increased. Relative crystallinity in X ray diffraction patterns was decreased and starch granule observed by scanning electron micro scopy was destroyed by severe hydroxypropylation. In color properties of films, b value was not significantly different in the films but 5% starch polyethylene films with 2.5 PO starch showed the lowest L and a value. Tensile strength and strain energy of the films except the film containing 10.0 PO starch were higher than those of the containing native starch.

In this study, effects of alkali swelling at low concentration below 2 percent on properties of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) were elucidated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the swelling characteristics of pulp fiber was evaluated by measuring the solvent retention values such as water retention value (WRV) and isopropyl alcohol retention value (LRV). It was found that fiber characteristics were influenced by NaOH swelling even at low alkali concentration and beating treatment as well. The values of WRV and LRV were decreased when the alkali concentration was increased. It is the result from the decreased acidic groups of pulp which were formed during beating. The acidic groups could be neutralized and then removed by alkali. The difference between WRV and LRV was decreased with increasing alkali concentration while the difference was increased when the alkali swollen pulp was beaten. In addition, the crystalline structure of HwBKP was almost not changed while the crystallinity was influenced by swelling treatment at a low alkali concentration.

Oxidized polyethylene wax is obtained by oxidation of polyethylene wax and it is composed of various chemicals, e.g., fatty acid, alcohol, ketone and ester. The application of oxidized polyethylene wax is determined by the composition of these chemical substances. In this basic study we observed the basic reaction parameters of time, temperature, oxygen concentration and catalysts on the oxidation reaction of low molecular weight polyethylene(PE wax) by analyzing the acid value, physical and chemical properties of oxidized PE wax to develop a new oxidation process. Acid values are increased with temperature increase in the rage of $150^{\circ}C^{\sim}180^{\circ}C$ but decreased beyond 190$^{\circ}C$. Acid values are also increased with oxygen concentration. As the oxidation reaction proceeds the molecular weight and softening points of oxidation products are decreased by cracking reaction, but the viscosities are increased. To observe the crystallinity of oxidation products SEM experiment was performed. To obtain a high acid-value product in a mild condition, we adopted free radical catalysts and the acid value of the product using catalyst was higher than the product obtained without catalyst in the same reaction condition. The effective initiators were dicumyl peroxide(DCPO), t-butylperoxy-2-ethyl hexanoate(HOPO) and benzoyl peroxide(BPO) having long half-life.

Titanium oxy-nitride ($TiN_O_y$) thin films were deposited on $SiO_2$/Si substrates using reactive dc magnetron sputtering, and were then annealed at various temperatures in air ambient to incorporate oxygen into the films. The effect of annealing temperature on the structural and electrical properties of the films was investigated. The grain size of the films decreases with increasing annealing temperature. On the other hand, crystallinity of the films is independent of annealing temperature in air ambient. Resistivity of the films increases remarkably as an annealing temperature increases and temperature coefficience of resistance (TCR) of the films varies from a positive value to a negative value. The films annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ for 30 min exhibited a near-zero TCR value of approximately -5 ppm/K. The decrease of the grain size with increasing annealing temperature was attributed to an increase of oxygen concentration incorporated into the films during anncaling treatment.
To enhance the application of lotus roots and to provide basic data for processed foods with lotus roots, lotus root powder was processed under four different conditions, and their physicochemical properties were analyzed as follows. In the Hunter's color value results, the salted sample had the highest L value, and the vinegared sample had the highest a and b values. The water-holding capacities of the salted, vinegared, and blanched samples were higher than that of the control sample. The amylase contents were in the 19.57-20.43% range but were not significant. The swelling power and solubility of the processed samples increased as the temperature rose. The blanched sample had the highest swelling power and solubility (65 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively). The crystallinity of the processed samples, as determined via X-ray diffraction, reached their peak at $16.9^{\circ}$, and the other peaks at 14.6, 22.2, and $23.8^{\circ}$ were typical of the B type. In addition, the relative crystallinity, gelatinization temperature, and enthalpy, as determined via DSC thermogram, were highest in the vinegared sample and lowest in the blanched sample. In the amylogram results, the vinegared sample had the highest maximum viscosity and breakdown. The retrogradation of the vinegared sample was the slowest as its setback value was the lowest.
$MgTiO_3$ thin films were prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering in order to prepare miniaturized NPO type MLCCs. $MgTiO_3$ films showed a polycrystalline structure of ilmenite characterized by the appearance of (110) and (202) peaks. The intensity of the peaks decreased with an increase in the chamber pressure due to the decrease of crystallinity which resulted from the decrease of kinetic energy of the sputtered atoms. The films annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 60min. showed a fine grained microstructure without micro-cracks. The grain size and roughness of the $MgTiO_3$ films decreased with the increase of chamber pressure. The average surface roughness was 1.425~0.313 nm for $MgTiO_3$ films prepared at 10~70 mTorr. $MgTiO_3$ films showed a dielectric constant of 17~19.7 and a dissipation factor of 2.1~4.9% at 1MHz. The dielectric constant of the films is similar to that of bulk ceramics. The dielectric constant and the dissipation factor decreased with the increase of the chamber pressure due to the decrease of grain size and crystallinity. The leakage current density was $10^{-5}\sim10^{-7}A/cm^2$ at 200kV/cm and this value decreased with the increase of the chamber pressure. The small grain size and smooth surface microstructure of the films deposited at high chamber pressure resulted in a low leakage current density. $MgTiO_3$ films showed a near zero temperature coefficient and satisfied the specifications for NPO type materials. The dielectric properties of the $MgTiO_3$ thin films prepared by sputtering suggest the feasibility of their application for MLCCs.
The study was carried out to determine the gel pasting properties of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Geoncheonheugbori) as affected by different proton beam irradiation. The ${\lambda}max$, blue value, and amylose content were significantly associated with increasing proton beam irradiation. The pasting time in barley flour irradiated with proton beam ranged 0.09 to 0.16 min shorter than nonirradiated barley flour. Gel pasting temperature ranged 57.4 to $60.5^{\circ}C$. Gel pasting temperature in barley flour decreased with increasing proton beam irradiation. Proton beam irradiation caused a significant decrease in the onset temperature (To), peak temperature (Tp), conclusion temperature (Tc) and enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$). Gelatinization range (R) in barley starch was more broaden than that of non-irradiated barley starch. Barley starches gave the strong diffraction peak at around $2{\Theta}$ values$15^{\circ}$, $18^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $23^{\circ}$$2{\Theta}$. Peak intensity tended to increase with increased proton beam irradiation. The granule crystallinity is closely associated with decreased amylose and increased amylopectin component. The crystallinity degree of barley starch irradiated with proton beam was significantly increased and it ranged from 24.9 to 32.9% compared to the non-irradiated barley starches. It might be deduced that proton beam irradiation causes significant changes of properties of starch viscosity in rice, especially at high irradiation of proton beam.

The hexagonal tungsten bronze $Cs_xWO_3$ nanoparticle was synthesized by a chemical coprecipitation method of ammonium tungstate and $Cs_2CO_3$ in acidic condition. This synthetic method for cesium tungsten bronze is reported for the first time as far as we know. The synthesized $Cs_xWO_3$ as precipitated showed a weak crystallinity of hexagonal unit cell with a crystallite size of about 4 nm without annealing. When the synthesized $Cs_xWO_3$ was annealed in $N_2$ atmosphere, the crystallinity and crystallite size systematically increased maintaining the typical hexagonal tungsten bronze structure as the annealing temperature increased. The analyzed Cs content in the bronze was about 0.3 vs W, which is very close to the theoretical maximum value, 1/3 in cesium tungsten bronze. According to XPS analysis, the reduced tungsten ions existed as both the forms of $W^{5+}$ and $W^{4+}$ and the contents systematically increased as the annealing temperature increased up to $800^{\circ}C$. The $Cs_xWO_3$ thin films on PET substrate were also prepared by a wet-coating method using the ball-milled solution of the annealed $Cs_xWO_3$ nanoparticles at various temperatures. The near-infrared shielding property of these thin films increased systematically as the annealing temperature increased up to $800^{\circ}C$ as expected with the increased contents of reduced tungsten ions.
It was found that polypropylene shows rearrangement of crystal structure during the melting process. For the analysis of recrystallization behavior, the change of dynamic mechanical property, crystallinity, and crystal structure were studied by DSC, FT-IR, SAXS, and DMA. Melt-recrystallization-remelting behavior of iPP was clearly observed when iPP was cooled down kom the melt more rapidly. Elastic modulus of iPP increased during the recrystallization process but crystallinity of iPP shows constant value. Furthermore, the full width of half mean of SAXS pattern decreased about 30%, and intra-lamella ordering of iPP increased during the melt process but is was not found for sPP.
