  • Nanomachining process, static nanoplowing, is one of the most promising lithographic technologies in terms of the low cost of operation and variety of workable materials. In nanomachining process, chemical effects are more dominant factor compared with those by physical deformation or fracture. For example, during the nanoscratch on a silicon surface in the atmosphere, micro protuberances are formed due to the mechanochemical reaction between diamond tip and the surfaces. On the contrary, in case of chemically stable materials, such as ceramic or glass, surface protuberances are not formed. The purpose of this study is to understand effects of the mechanochemical reaction between tip and surfaces on deformation behaviors of hard-brittle materials. Nanometerscale elasoplastic deformation behavior of single crystal silicon (100) was characterized with micro protuberance phenomena, and compared with that of borosilicate (Pyrex glass 7740). In addition, effects of the silicon protuberances on nanoscratch test results were discussed.

  • Understanding the irradiation hardening effect of structural steels under various irradiation conditions plays an important role in developing advanced nuclear systems. Such being the case, a crystal plasticity model for body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal based on the density of dislocations and irradiation defects is summarized and numerically implemented in this paper. Based on this model, nano-indentation hardness of Chinese A508-3 steels with ion irradiation is calculated. Very good agreement is observed between simulation and experimental data of several different irradiation doses subjected to various operating temperatures, from which, it can be concluded that indentation hardness increases with increasing irradiation dose at both room temperature and high temperature. Consequently, the validity of this model has been proved properly, and furthermore, the model established in this paper could guide the study of irradiation hardening effect and temperature effect to some extent.

  • Magnesium alloy sheets have unique mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening response. The unusual mechanical behavior of magnesium alloys has been understood by the limited symmetry crystal structure of HCP metals or by deformation twinning. In the present study, the continuum plasticity models considering the unusual plastic behavior of magnesium alloy sheet were derived for a finite element analysis. A new hardening law based on two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metal sheets such as Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. In terms of the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified to include the anisotropy of magnesium alloys.

  • The deformation mechanism of hexagonal close-packed materials is quite complicate including slips and twins. A deformation mechanism, which accounts for both slip and twinning, was investigated for polycrystalline hop materials. The model was developed in a finite element polycrystal model formulated with initial strain method where the stiffness matrix in FEM is based on the elastic modulus. We predicted numerically the texture of Mg alloy(AZ31B) sheet by using FEM based on crystal plasticity theory. Also, we introduced the recrystallized texture employed the maximum energy release theory after rolling. From the numerical study, it was clarified that the shrink twin could not be the main mechanism for shortening of c-axis, because the lattice rotation due to twin rejects fur c-axis to become parallel to ND(normal direction of plate). It was showed that the deformation texture with the pyramidal slip gives the ring type pole figure having hole in the center.

  • This paper is concerned with the prediction of micro structural changes of Al alloys during cryogenic rolling using an Eulerian finite element analysis. The main objective of cryogenic rolling is to obtain ultra-fine grains by severe plastic deformation at the extremely low temperature. Thereby, this simulation focuses on micro structural developments - the texture development and the changes in the size and shape of grains. The former one may be modeled using a crystal plasticity theory while the other can be predicted by a streamline technique. Applications to three pass rolling are given.

  • The shearing and punching processes are analyzed with the finite element method using an isotropic material model. The experimental result in the punching process shows that final radiuses of sheet metal according to the rolling direction and transverse direction are different because of the material anisotropy. The material anisotropy is induced by complicated large deformation in the polycrystalline aggregate. The contact region between the punch and sheet metal experiences severe deformation such as shear, compression and tension in the punching process. In this paper, the analysis of punching process for Al 1100 is performed with the ABAQUS Standard. The analysis of texture development and evolution is carried out based on the deformation history in the punching process. The deformation histories are extracted by UMAT in the ABAQUS Standard. The torture development is investigated with the pole figure and yield surface during the punching process.

  • Tensile deformation behavior with different strain rate was investigated. $Zr_{56.2}Ti_{13.8}Nb_{5.0}Cu_{6.9}Ni_{5.6}Be_{12.5}$ (bulk metallic glass alloy possessed crystal phase which was called $\beta$-phase of dendrite shape, mean size of $20{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and occupied 25% of the total volume) was used in this study. Maximum tensile strength was obtained as 1.74Gpa at strain rate of $10^2/s$ and minimum strength was found to be 1.6GPa at $10^{-1}/s$. And then, maximum plastic deformation occurred at the strain rate of $5{\times}10^{-2}/s$ and represented 1.75%, though minimum plastic deformation showed 0%. In the specific range of strain rate, relatively higher plastic deformation and lower ultimate tensile strength were found with lots of shear bands. The fractographical observation after tensile test indicated that vein like pattern on the fracture surface was well developed especially in the above range of strain rate.

  • LGP (light guide plate) of LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display - Back Light Unit) is one of the major components which affects the product quality of LCD. In the present study, the optical patterns of LGP(2.2") are manufactured by three different methods, namely, laser ablation, chemical etching and LiGA - reflow, respectively. The pattern surface images and roughness of mold and product were compared to check the optical characteristics. From the results of measurement the optical patterns fabricated by LiGA - reflow method showed the best geometric structure as intended in design and the lowest roughness among those.

  • This paper dealt with the design guide of the conventional edge-lit backlight optic with which the on-axis luminance could be increased by trying to improve the light condensing efficiency of a bright enhancement film (BEF). First, the general design guide concerned with the backlight optic was proposed, and then its validness was experimentally proved by conducting design examples with haze controls of both diffuse film and microdot material printed on the backside of the light guide plate. Experimental results showed that the variation range of the on-axis luminance by the present approach was about $5{\sim}9%$, which would be by no means negligible in the practical application.

  • Effect of the several initial textures such as random texture, rolling texture and cube texture, on the plane strain stretching was studied by interpretation of the finite element method. The calculation of yield locus indicated that the sheet oriented in the cube texture exhibits easy yielding on uniaxial stress state whereas the sheet having either a random or the rolling texture exhibits easy yielding on shear deformation. Upon stretching tests, the thickness strain at the center region contacting the punch was identical regardless of the initial textures while the dependence of the thickness strain on the initial texture was found in the other regions. In general punch loads required or the sheet with an initial cube texture was as expected from calculated yield locus, lower than those for the others.
