  • In this work, we introduce a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor(CMOS)-based integrated circuit(IC) measurement set-up for quantum computer control and read-out using a cryogenic refrigerator. CMOS circuits have to operate at extremely low temperatures of 3 to 5 K for qubit stability and noise reduction. The existing cryogenic measurement system is liquid helium quenching, which is expensive due to the long-term use of expendable resources. Therefore, we describe a cryogenic measurement system based on a closed cycle refrigerator (CCR) that is cost-free even when using helium gas for long periods of time. The refrigerator capable of reaching 4.7 K was built using a Gifford-Mcmahon(G-M) type cryocooler. This is expected to be a cryogenic refrigerator set-up with excellent price competitiveness.

  • Toward the practical applications, on operation of conduction-cooled HTS SMES at temperatures well below 40[K] should be investigated, in order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of HTS and considerably reduce the size and weight of the system. In order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of high temperature superconducting (HTS) and considerably reduce the size and weight of the system, conduction-cooled HTS superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) at temperatures well below 40[K] should be investigated. This work focuses on the breakdown and flashover phenomenology of dielectrics exposed in air and/or vacuum for temperatures ranging from room temperature to cryogenic temperature. Firstly, we summarize the insulation factors of the magnet for the conduction cooled HTS SMES. And Secondly a surface flashover as well as volume breakdown in air and/or vacuum with two kind insulators has been investigated. Finally, we will discuss applications for the HTS SMES including aging studies on model coils exposed in vacuum at cryogenic temperature. The commercial application of many conduction-cooled HTS magnets, however, requires refrigeration at temperatures below 40[K], in order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of HTS and reduce considerably the size and weight of the system. The magnet is driven in vacuum condition. The need to reduce the size and weight of the system has led to the consideration of the vacuum as insulating media. We are studying on the insulation factors of the magnet for HTS SMES. And we experiment the spacer configure effect in the dielectric flashover characteristics. From the results, we confirm that our research established basic information in the insulation design of the magnet.

  • In order to prevent roll-over and a rapid boil-off of LNG in tanks, the phase equilibria of carbon dioxide in liquefied natural gas components as binary mixtures at cryogenic temperatures have been experimentally measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with a specially designed variable pressure/temperature cryostat cell (pathlength 2 mm; pressures up to 30 bar). Solid carbon dioxide has been found to be comparatively soluble in liquid nitrogen (3.25$\times$${10}^{-6}$ mole fraction), liquid methane (1.04$\times$${10}^{-4}$ mole fraction), liquid ethane (3.1$\times$${10}^{-2}$ mole fraction) and liquid propane (6.11$\times$${10}^{-2}$ mole fraction) at their normal boiling temperatures. The solubilities of carbon dioxide in various cryogens, which increased with increasing temperature, are much lower than those obtained by others using gas chromatography. The differences are attributed to infrared spectroscopy selectively measuring dissolved solute in situ whereas gas chromatography measures microscopic particulate solid in addition to dissolved solute.

  • The structural analyses and experimental results for the bellows of a gas-generator liquid oxygen shut-off valve were presented. The bellows experiences axial compression and external high pressure loadings at cryogenic temperatures. The analyses were performed using EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) standard and the commercial FE (finite element) analysis program, Abaqus v6.9, at room and cryogenic temperatures. The spring modulus, the induced stress and the expected fatigue life of the bellows were compared respectively. The effects by the contact and the material plasticity on the FE analysis results were also analyzed. Also, FE analyses related to a burst test were presented.

  • Additive manufacturing with 3XX austenitic stainless steels has been widely investigated during a decade due to its high strength, good corrosion resistance, and fair weldability. However, in recently, Ni price drastically increased due to the high demand of secondary battery for electric mobilities. Thus, it is essential to substitute the Ni with Mn for reducing stainless steels price. Meanwhile, the chemical composition changes in stainless steels not only affect to its properties but also change the optimal processing parameters during additive manufacturing. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the processing parameters of each alloy for obtaining high-quality product using additive manufacturing. After processing optimization, mechanical properties and microstructure of the laser-powder bed fusion processed Fe-15Cr-7Ni-3Mn alloy were investigated in both room (298 K) and cryogenic (77 K) temperatures. Since the temperature reduction affects to the deformation mechanism transition, multi-scale microstructural characterization technique was conducted to reveal the deformation mechanism of each sample.

  • For the development of butterfly valves used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels, the seat tightness is one of the important factors to be taken into account in the valve-design process. An O-ring-type metal seal with a retaining ring showing good seat tightness at cryogenic temperatures has been widely used, despite the high manufacturing costs involved. As an alternative, a flexible solid metal seal offers not only sufficient tightness of the butterfly valve, meeting specification requirements, but also relatively low manufacturing costs. In this study, a design criterion to ensure the seat tightness of the butterfly valve using the flexible solid metal seal is proposed. The contact pressure can be calculated by the simulation of the frictional contact behavior between the surface of the metal seal and the valve disc. The geometry of the flexible solid metal seal is determined so that it satisfies the design criterion for sufficient seat tightness, and is verified by experiments according to BS6755 and BS6364.

  • The characteristics of evaporation heat transfer for the utilization of LNG cold energy was investigated experimentally using liquified nitrogen and a solution of ethylene-glycol and water under horizontal two-phase conditions in the small-scale equipment of a cryogenic heat exchange system. The inner tubes in the double pipe heat exchanger with 8 mm and 15 mm inner diameter and 6 m length were adopted as a smooth test tubes and enhanced tubes by means of wire-coil inserts. Heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt number for the test tube were calculated from measurements of temperatures, flowrates and pressures. The correlations in a power-law relationship of the Nusselt number, the Reynolds number and Prandtl number for heat transfer were proposed which can be available for design of cryogenic heat exchangers. The correlations showed heat transfer coefficients for the wire-coil inserts were much higher than those for the smooth tubes, increased by more than 2.5 ${\~}$ 5.5 times depending upon the equivalent Reynolds number. Form and length of cryogenic double pipe heat exchanger were proposed for applicable to the utilization of LNG cold energy.
