  • Recently, reciprocating cryogenic pumps are mainly developed for small-and-mid sized fuel supply systems. Centrifugal type pumps are not actively developed. Most cryogenic submerged pumps are imported. For transportation, cryogenic liquefied natural gas requires the liquid pump technology that can works in extreme evironments. In order to transport liquefied natural gas, it is necessary to apply pump technology. This is the fundamental research for developing the submerged pump technology applicable to the transportation and storage system equipment of cryogenic liquefied system. It tries to secure basic design materials through reverse-engineering in the cryogenic submerged pump development. Regarding materials, STS-304 and STS-431 which are stainless materials widely used in the cryogenic area are applied. Aluminum alloy is applied to impeller and upper manifolder and the pump rotates at the high speed of 6,000rpm.

  • In the development of rocket turbo-pump, cavitation at the inducer is one of the major problems. Cryogenic fluids are commonly used for rocket propellant, therefore, thermodynamic effect becomes noticeable compared to conventional water cavitation. In the present study, a numerical simulation method for cryogenic cavitation is proposed, which reveals the difference between cryogenic and water cavitation.

  • Recently, for such reasons as its inexpensive price and eco-friendliness, LNG has been under the limelight as an alternative fuel for vessels and is expected to grow rapidly in the industry. However, the technology level of domestic shipbuilders in manufacturing the cryogenic pump designed to supply LNG for vessels is so low that design and manufacturing technology of core parts are in urgent need. Therefore, this study describes the stepwise development procedure of cryogenic submerged centrifugal pump for ship LNG supply system. And it aims to suggest practical and specific development methods of the pump by approaching the characteristics of each step and major development items from the standpoint of engineering and management.

  • With the continuous performance improvement and commercialization of HTS wires, there have been many efforts to commercialize HTS power cables recently. Unlike conventional power cables, a cryogenic cooling system is required for a HTS power cable and a cryogenic pump is one of the essential components to circulate subcooled liquid nitrogen and cool the HTS power cable. Especially, the development of a reliable and high-efficiency cryogenic pump is an important issue for the commercialization of HTS power cables of several kilometers or more. In this study, we designed and fabricated a cryogenic pump for subcooled liquid nitrogen with a mass flow rate of 1.2 kg/s, a differential pressure of 5 bar, and evaluated the hydraulic performance of the pump. Impeller design was conducted to meet the target design performance with 1 D analysis model and CFD analysis. The pump performance parameters such as pressure heads, mass flow rates, and efficiencies in accordance with rotating speeds were assessed using a laboratory's performance evaluation system.

  • Cryogenic pump test facility (CPTF) is designed and developed in KARI. Hydraulic and cavitation performance of pump and inducer in cryogenic environment can be measured. Working fluid is liquid nitrogen and operating temperature is $-197^{\circ}C$. Run tank, catch tank of liquid nitrogen and their pressurizing tank has been built and remote tank pressure control system are installed. Maximum power of driving motor is 320 kW and its maximum speed is 32000rpm. Cryogenic fluids and lubricating systems are effectively separated that long test times are acquired. Therefore hydraulic and cavitation performance can be measured accurately and effectively. Pre-cooling test of the facility was successfully accomplished. This facility will contribute greatly to the development of turbopump for KSLV.

  • High Temperature Superconductor power cable systems are being developed actively to solve the problem of increasing power demand. With increases in the unit length of the High Temperature Superconductor power cable, it is necessary to develop highly efficient and reliable cryogenic pumps to transport the coolant over long distances. Generally, to obtain a high degree of efficiency, the cryogenic pump requires a high pressure rise with a low flow rate, and a partial emission type pump is appropriate considering its low specific speed, which is different from the conventional centrifugal type, full emission type. This paper describes the design of a partial emission pump to circulate subcooled liquid nitrogen. It consists of an impeller, a circular case and a diffuser. The conventional pump and the partial emission pump have different features in the impeller and the discharge flow passage. The partial emission pump uses an impeller with straight radial blades. The emission of working fluid does not occur continuously from all of the impeller channels, and the diffuser allows the flow only from a part of the impeller channels. As the area of the diffuser increases gradually, it converts the dynamic pressure into static pressure while minimizing the loss of total pressure. We used the known numerical method for the optimum design process and made a CFD analysis to verify the theoretical performance.

  • In order to develop a universal cryogenic piston pump of small size for increasing utilization of liquid hydrogen, dynamic compression performance of piston pump were evaluated and improvements were also discussed for piston rod and piston tip. The cryogenic piston pump has crosshead structure and inclined cup shape piston tip. As the results, it was found that i) insulation of heat flow from piston-rod part is required for stable operation ii) improving the self-clearance adjustment effect of piston tip and reducing piston eccentricity were desirable to promote pumping pressure and operating range.

  • In this paper, the study presents the development of 34kW class cryogenic induction motor using LNG Pump. Operating temperature of an induction motor using LNG Main Cargo Pump is at −163℃. Due to variation of the resistivity, these motor have different torque characteristics. So, it should design to considering the resistivity change. The most important consideration of induction machine operating is cryogenic temperature. If the temperature rise, LNG is vaporized. it is a major cause of pump failure. There are several causes of heat source like coreloss, hysterisysloss, copperloss. This paper analyzed the thermal distribution of the induction motor at rated speed operation.

  • The turbo pump of a liquid rocket engine is composed of three main parts: the oxidizer pump, fuel pump, and turbine. Liquid oxygen ($LO_X$) is the working fluid in the cryogenic environment in the oxidizer pump, but tests are usually performed using liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$), which has a boiling point similar to that of $LO_X$ but is comparatively safer and easier to use for the test. In this study, a bearing test rig is developed and its performance is evaluated using a cryogenic ball bearing with $LN_2$ as the working fluid. Verifying the performance of the bearing test rig is crucial for ensuring correct working of the turbo pump unit in the liquid rocket engine. A stable test rig for the bearing in a cryogenic environment makes the bearing technology enhance its reliability. The test results show that the system operates stably and the requirement of performance time of 500 s is met. The test results of temperature, motor speed, and torque are discussed. The developed cryogenic bearing test rig is expected to help in widening knowledge and expanding research on ball bearings in the future.

  • This study represents basic research for the development of submerged pump technology applicable to transfer and storage of a cryogenic liquids. Its purpose is to secure baseline design data by applying reverse engineering to the process of developing a submerged cryogenic pump. The two-stage model included in the ARTICK Series LNG Submerged Pump produced by Vanzetti of Italy was selected for analysis for development of a localized product, and was disassembled for reverse engineering. The pump was disassembled after analyzing its processing/assembly characteristics such as shrinkage of fittings. In addition, the materials used in manufacturing of the main components were analyzed, and the ingredients were confirmed. As a result, a design drawing for each component required for product development was secured via foundational design, and a test product was manufactured by maximizing the application of appropriate domestic technologies.
