  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the proposed jig for turning process of large-scale aluminum tube of D500mm through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Also, a machining evaluation is conducted with general heat-treated and cryogenic heat-treated tubes. Dimensions of the specimens are determined to be suitable for collet appearance. The characteristics of equivalent stress and strain according to the expansion of the collet are evaluated by FEA. The aluminum tubes which are heat-treated by T4/T6 condition and cryogenic condition are machined by using a large-scale lathe machine and the roundness of machined tube is evaluated by using a 3D measuring machine. Through the results of this study, effects of each heat treatment and residual stress on the roundness are established.

  • In this paper, a basic study on micro cutting process with SM20C at low temperature environment was performed. In macro cutting fields, the cryogenic cutting process has been applied to cut the refractory metal but, the serious problem may be generated in micro cutting fields by the cryogenic environment. However, if the proper low temperature is applied to micro cutting area, the cooling effect of cutting heat is expected. Such effect can make the reduction of tool wear and burr formation. For verifying this possibility, the micro cutting experiment at low temperature was performed and SEM images were analyzed.

  • We experimented on cutting characteristics-cutting force, behavior of cutting temperature, surface roughness. chip thickness under low temperature, which generated by liquid nitrogen(77K). The work-pieces were freezed to-195 .deg. C and liquid nitrogen was also sprinkled on cutting area in order to decrease an experimental error of machining in low temperature. The workpiece was became to -195 .deg. C in5 minutes. In cooled condition surface roughness of workpiece was better than normal condition. In addition, we investigated the possibility that surface roughness of workpiece and cutting force can be predicted analyzing cutting conditions by the trained neural network.

  • We report a method for improving heat exchange between cryo-cooled large-power-dissipation devices and liquid cryogen. Micro-machined monolithic heat sinks were fabricated on a high integration density superconducting Josephson device, and studied for their effect on cooling the device. The monolithic heat sink showed a significant enhancement of cooling capability, which markedly improved the device operation under large dc- and microwave power dissipation. The detailed mechanism of the enhancement still needs further modeling and experiments in order to optimize the design of the heat sink.

  • We experimented on cutting characteristics-cutting force, behavior of cutting temprature, surface foughness, behavior of chips-under low tempdeature, which generated by liquid nitrogen (77K). The workpieces were freezed to -195 .deg. C and liquid nitrogen was also sprinkled on cutting area in order to increase the efficiency of machining in low temperature. The workpiece was became to -195 .deg. C in 5 minutes, and cutting temperature in CC was lower about 170 .deg. C than NC. The cutting force trended to increase slighty in cooled cutting, but chip thickness was decreased, shear angle was however increased. The form of chips was in good conditions of long or short tubular chips in CC. In CC surface roughness of workpiece was better than NC. In NC surface hardness of chips trended to increase according to increasing of cutting speed, but in CC it trended to decrease. The power spectrum of vertical cutting force trended to increase according to increasing of feed, and in CC it was higher than NC.

  • We report our research on aluminum mirror optics for future infrared astronomical satellites. For space infrared missions, cooling the whole instrument is crucial to suppress the infrared background and detector noise. In this aspect, aluminum is appropriate for cryogenic optics, because the same material can be used for the whole structure of the instrument including optical components thanks to its excellent machinability, which helps to mitigate optical misalignment at low temperatures. We have fabricated aluminum mirrors with ultra-precision machining and measured the wave front errors (WFEs) of the mirrors with a Fizeau interferometer. Based on the power spectral densities of the WFEs, we confirmed that the surface accuracy of all the mirrors satisfied the requirements for the SPICA Coronagraph Instrument. We then integrated the mirrors into an optical system, and examined the image quality of the system with an optical laser. As a result, the total WFE is estimated to be 33 nm (rms) from the Strehl ratio. This is consistent with the WFEs estimated from the measurement of the individual mirrors.
