  • In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the crushed stones was investigated through the real scale railroad roadbed tests. Several real scale reinforced railroad roadbeds were constructed in the laboratory with different subgrade conditions and were tested with the estimated actual train loads including the impact loading of train. The affecting factors such as settlement, earth pressure and stress change at the surface of reinforced roadbed, subgrade layers as well as surface of rails were measured. It was found through the actual testing that for the roadbed with the same thickness, the settlement and vibration level (velocity) of reinforced roadbed decreases with the increase of reaction modulus of subgrade. The settlement of reinforced roadbed with the same reaction modulus of subgrade also decreases with the increase of thickness of the reinforced roadbed.

  • Reinforced-Roadbed materials are usually composed of crushed stones. Repeated load application can induce deformation in the reinforced-roadbed layer so that it causes irregularity of track. Thus it is important to develop a prediction model of elastic modulus based on stress-strain relation under repeatitive load in order to investigate behavior of reinforced roadbed. The prediction model of elastic modulus of the material can be obtained from repeated triaxial test. However, a proper size of the sample for the test must be used. In this study, a large repeatitive triaxial test apparatus with the sample size of diameter of 30 cm and height of 60cm was adapted for performing test of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed considering large particle size to get resilient modulus Mr. The obtained resilient modulus was compared to shear modulus obtained from mid size resonant column test. The sample size effect is somewhat large enough so that it is required to design a scale factor based on similarity law in order to use smaller samples for getting elastic modulus of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed material. A scale factor could be obtained from this study.

  • This study is to prove the efficiency of geo-synthetics on the crushed stone layer by experiments. The strength of PET mat as reinforcing soft ground was verified through the loading experiments. Also, PP mat was used to protect the blockage of crushed stone layer by the filled soil, whose efficiency was examined according to loading and infiltration conditions. The crushed stones were penetrated into clay layer if the PET mat was removed, which was verified by loading experiments. In addition, the cohesioness of soil without PP mat made the blockage of stone layer easily, which reduced the infiltration capacity by about 98%.

  • In this study, the acceleration changes of the surrounding ground when crushed stones were installed in a strip-type were analyzed using the 1-G shaking table test. The ground was constructed from clay, and the foundation was installed using crushed stone of strip-type form. The response acceleration and response spectrum for various input seismic motions were analyzed. The change in acceleration was examined according to the adjacent distance to the strip-type crushed stone foundation. In the Hachinohe seismic motion results, there was no significant decrease in acceleration, but the maximum response acceleration for the two seismic motions was inversely proportional to the distance from the crushed stone foundation. As a result of the response spectrum analysis, the attenuation period in the long period and the short period input wave were different from each other, and the change in response spectrum affected the maximum acceleration value. As the distance from the crushed stone foundation was increased, the attenuation was larger in the period between 0.08 and 0.5 sec in the Hachinohe seismic motion, the attenuation was larger in the period of less than 0.2 seconds in the Northridge seismic motion.

  • Crushed peach stone shells were impregnated with $H_3PO_4$ of increasing concentrations (30-70%) followed by heat treatment at 773 K for 3 h. Produced carbons (ACs) were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K using the BET-equation and the ${\alpha}$-method. High surface area microporous ACs were obtained, with enhanced internal pore volume, as function of % $H_3PO_4$. Adsorption isotherms from aqueous solution were determined for methylene blue (MB) and p-nitrophenol (PNP), as representatives for dye and phenolics pollutant molecules. Application of the Langmuir model proved the high limiting capacity towards both solute molecules, MB was uptaken in increasing amounts as function of $H_3PO_4$ concentration and generated porosity. High removal of PNP was almost the same irrespective of porosity characteristics. Competitive adsorption of $H_2O$ molecules on the hydrophilic carbon surface seems to partially reduce the available area to the PNP molecules. Application of the pseudo-second order law described well the fast adsorption (${\leq}$ 120 min) at two initial dye concentrations.

  • The reinforced-roadbed materials composed of crushed stones are used for preventing vertical deformation and reducing impact load caused by highspeed train. Repeated load application can induce deformation in the reinforced-roadbed layer so that it causes irregularity of track. Thus it is important to understand characteristics of permanent deformation in the reinforced-subbase materials. The characteristics of permanent deformation can be simulated by prediction model that can be obtained by performing repetitive triaxial test. The prediction model of permanent deformation is a key-role in construction of design method of track. The prediction model of permanent deformation is represented in usual as the hyperbolic function with increase of number of load repetition. The prediction model is sensitive to many factors including stress level etc. so that it is important to define parameters of the model as clearly as possible. Various data obtained from repetitive triaxial test and resonant column test using the reinforced-roadbed of crushed stone are utilized to develop a new prediction model based on concept of shear-stress ratio and elastic modulus. The new prediction model of permanent deformation can be adapted for developing design method of track in the future.

  • In this study, a mid-size RC test apparatus equipped with analyzing program is developed that can test samples up to D=10cm diameter and H=20cm height which is larger than usual samples of D=5cm and H=10cm used mostly in practice. Thus, crushed stones with larger grains up to 38mm in diameter used mostly in Korea as reinforced trackbed materials in track construction could be considered effectively than conventionally used RC apparatus for evaluation of the dynamic properties of the materials by using the newly developed RC apparatus. The RC test apparatus was designed and assembled based on the concept of fixed-free fixity conditions and driving mechanism proposed by Stokoe. Using the developed RC test apparatus, three types of representative crushed reinforced trackbed materials were tested in order to get the dynamic properties of the materials such as $G/G_{max}$ reduction curves and damping ratio D. For comparison purpose, a small RC test apparatus has been used to test the same materials.

  • The historical exchanges between the Republic of Korea and Japan have broadly occurred, in terms of both political and cultural aspects, from ancient to modern times. Regarding ancient gardening culture, in particular, Asuka developed gardens with the gardening techniques passed down by the Baekje people. The development of the basic form of a garden pond along with its characteristics, established through such exchanges, is suggested by investigating its components through analysis of data from the gardens of Baekje and Asuka. In terms of the garden pond structure, homogeneity was confirmed between Baekje and Asuka, with a linear rectangular form as the basic design. In addition, the vertical construction technique was used by both ancient kingdoms. In terms of the types of stone used in building the shore of the garden pond, Baekje used diverse types such as natural stone, crushed stone, and cut stone. In contrast, rounded river stone was used by Asuka. Regarding the floor of the garden pond, Baekje used soil, which enabled the planting of lotus flowers. In contrast, Asuka used stones to pave pond floors, which made the growth of plants impossible. In terms of layout, Baekje used ornamental stones for pond landscaping, while Asuka used manmade island and water intake facilities in their pond construction. The effects of Baekje's garden culture on Asuka's garden building can be seen from its influence on the form of the garden pond and shore construction style. In terms of the construction of the garden pond's shore with the same stones and the stone flooring, the garden ponds of the Asuka Kingdom reveal technically unified and refined aspects.

  • The most important thing in the design of the reinforced earth retaining wall is to obtain the good backfill materials. However there was a special case using soils mixed with the crushed stone, because the field ran short of good backfill soils. Accordingly in this study various kind of tests were performed according to the mixing content of a crushed stone, which are the gradation curve, the direct shear test and the pullout test. From the test results at first the gradation of soils mixed with crushed stone has been compared with the selecting standard as backfill of reinforced earth wall. And the gradation standard has been satisfied in case of mixing ratio 20% of a crushed stone under 19mm. Also the direct shear test and the pullout test have been performed and at the test results the shear strength parameter and the pullout strength parameter were increased with the increse of the mixing content of a crushed stone. It has been thought that this study will give important data to a designer in designing the reinforced earth wall with soils mixed with crush stones.

  • The Dangri Crushed Stone Quarry is located in Dangridong, Busan City, and around the estuary of the Nagdong River. The quarry is considered to be a very promised one in the urban area from the standpoints of the assessment of the aggregate rank, the environmental impacts and the transportation distance. The crushed stones for aggregate of the quarry marks the higher rank in the gravity, the absorption ratio, the abrasion ratio, and the stability in comparison with the JISA 5005. The basement vibrations of the residential section in the vicinity of the quarry, which are arised by the millisecond blasting at the quarry site using the gelatin dynamites less than 39kg in weight, are measured to assess the vibration nuisance. The values of acceleration and the magnitudes are less than eight gals and O on the Richter scale respectively, the vibration nuisance thus can be ignored in such scales of the experiments. The traffic vibrations of the residential section are slightly susceptible. In the experiments, the traffic vibrations appears to be sensibler to the basement than the explosion vibration. The explosion noises in the experiments are not checked not only on the RION Sound Level Meter but also to our ears. The values of traffic noises also are in the safety values of the noise nuisance. The crush dust suspends in the air toward the upper valley in the opposite side of the residential area because of the influences of the sea breeze and the valley wind in the daytime, and the monsoon and the topographic disposition. the dust nuisance thus would not be remained in problem. The quarry is operated in the daytime only. The traffic dust in the residential area will be reduced by the faultless pavement and the careful driving. The elaborate survey on the ridges and peaks surrounded the quarry is recommended to prevent in advance the accidents of the rock slide. Moreover, it is required to make an advisory committee to develop the industry and to save the techniques. The most important matter is the accomodation between the attitude of the enterprising man for the social responsibility to the public nuisance and the cooperative spirit of the inhabitants for the industry.
