The aim of this study was to utilize ferronickel slag produced in the manufacture of stainless steel as a flowable backfill material for underground use using crushed fine powder. Experimental combinations were made using two components: Case A (sand) and Case B (soil). The optimal mixing ratio of Case A was sand (58.4%), ferronickel slag fine powder (21.6%), cement (1.8%), and water (18.2%). In the case of B, the optimal mixing ratio was determined to be soil (53.0%), ferronickel slag fine powder (20.0%), cement (1.7%), and water (25.3%). The uniaxial compressive strength of case A, which is a mixture of ordinary sand and ferronickel slag powder, was relatively larger than that of case B using soil. In addition, the strength of the specimen increased with increasing curing time. The uniaxial compressive strength tended to increase with increasing curing time. In addition, the unconfined compression strength of the fluid backfill material using common sand as the main material was relatively larger than that of the mixed material using soil as the main material. In case A, the uniaxial compressive strength ranged from 0.17-0.33 MPa, 0.21-0.39 MPa, and 0.19-0.40 MPa, respectively, at curing times of 7, 14, and 28 days. From the experimental results, it was concluded that the ratio of FNS powder and cement mixture was the most appropriate for Case A3. Case B, which used soil as the main material, showed a similar tendency to Case A. As a result of the dissolution test for evaluating the environmental harm of the FNS fine powder, there was no dissolution of substances harmful to the environment.

The composition of carbonate sands from a sabkha at Ruwais in the UAE differs from that of silica sand, and these sands are crushed easily under low compression pressures. Accordingly, particle crushing of carbonate sand occurs under high pressure, which results in additional settlement and reduces the shear strength. In this study, consolidation and triaxial tests were conducted to analyze the characteristics of carbonate sands following particle crushing. The unusual shear strength graphs of the carbonate sands result from the degree of particle pre-crushing. For the range at p' > p in the p (p')-q diagram, negative (-) excess porewater pressures occur if the axial pressure causes particle crushing that induces exposure of the inner voids. In addition, the q value decreased after particle crushing. In conclusion, the unusual characteristics of the carbonate sands were induced by particle crushing. The triaxial tests revealed that the degree of particle pre-crushing influenced the excess porewater pressure.
This study presents the correlations between quantified particle shape parameters and internal friction angles for nine sand specimens including six natural sands and three crushed sands. Specimens are subjected to 3D X-ray computed tomographic imaging and their particles are segmented through the aid of image processing techniques. Shapes of segmented particles are then quantified through two shape parameters such as sphericity and elongation. The direct shear apparatus enables us to measure peak and critical state friction angles of sand specimens of distinct relative densities. The gathered data show that decreasing sphericity and increasing elongation cause increases in peak and critical state friction angle with similar gradients.
For sand and zeolite filter media in stormwater BMPs, media breakage effects on infiltration were investigated. Compaction effort and infiltration force were mainly examined for breakage sources. The 1-D column infiltration tests for un-compacted and compacted media filters were conducted to investigate the breakage effect on infiltration. As a result, the following findings were deduced: 1) particle breakage due to filtration forces was found to be relatively minimal; 2) un-compacted media had lesser amount of crushed particles and permeability fluctuations compared to compacted media; 3) even without the presence of suspended solids in the influent, reduction in permeability was found, which resulted from rearrangement and re-entrainment of media particle itself; 4) only media particle breakage resistance is considered, sand was revealed to have better performance compared to zeolite media.
In this study relative density tests of bottom ash and standard sand were carried out. And cyclic triaxial tests for samples with the relative density of 40%, 55%, and 70% were carried out on the basis of the test results. Cyclic triaxial tests were also conducted for fines content with 55% relative density. Residual samples were divided into No.40, No.60, No.60, and No.100, and No.200. In order to avoid crashing that can happen when compaction of the sample is initiated, bottom ash was crushed using the a compact mold. In consideration of the crushing characteristics of each residual samples, the fragmentation rate increased up to 30%, which led to the adjustment of fine-grained amount to 10%, 20%, and 30%. Through the repative triaxial test in accordance with the relative density, resistant characteristics of the liquefaction of bottom ash was analyzed. Test results show that, crushing strength of bottom ash was smaller than that of standard sand, resulting in different liquefaction behavior characteristics. And we could find fines content with maximum resistant characteristics of the liquefaction.

This study has been carried out in two-phases to develop Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (FRSCC) performance. In the first phase, the composition of the quaternary composite binder compromised CEM I 42.5N (58-70%), Rice Husk Ash (25-37%), quartz sand (2.5-7.5%) and limestone crushing waste (2.5-7.5%) were optimized. And in the second phase, the effect of two fiber types (steel brass-plated and basalt) was investigated on the SCC optimized with the optimum CB as disperse reinforcement at 6 different ratios of 1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0% by weight of mix for each type. In this study, the theoretical principles of the synthesis of self-compacting dispersion-reinforced concrete have been developed which consists of optimizing structure-formation processes through the use of a mineral modifier, together with ground crushed cement in a vario-planetary mill to a specific surface area of 550 m2 / kg. The amorphous silica in the modifier composition intensifies the binding of calcium hydroxide formed during the hydration of C3S, helps reduce the basicity of the cement-composite, while reducing the growth of portlandite crystals. Limestone particles contribute to the formation of calcium hydrocarbonate and, together with fine ground quartz sand; act as microfiller, clogging the pores of the cement. Furthermore, the results revealed that the effect of fiber addition improves the mechanical properties of FRSCC. It was found that the steel fiber performed better than basalt fiber on tensile strength and modulus of elasticity; however, both fibers have the same performance on the first crack strength and sample destruction of FRSCC. It also illustrates that there will be an optimum percentage of fiber addition.
This study was performed to analyze test results on drying shrinkage for concrete specimens mixed with various constituents in concrete mixes. Test variables are coarse aggregate types(Limestone, Sandstone, Granite, Andesite, Gneiss), fine aggregate types(natural sand, crushed sand) and cement amounts(normal strength, high strength). Epoxy coating of(U&V-H(A,B)) was applied onto the specimen surface to simulate diverse volume surface ratios(22.2, 40, 85.7, 150, 200, 300) with different specimen sizes. The experiments had been executed during 1,014 days at a condition of $20^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 60% in environmental chambers. Test results showed that shrinkage strain from the specimen equivalent to real pavement decreased to 39% compared to the standard specimen recommended by KS. Test results also showed that shrinkage strain of the specimen mixed with Limestone was 56~76% of that with Sandstone, thus Limestone mix seems to be suitable to the concrete pavement.
Carbonate sands can be crushed under low confining pressure to achieve high compressibility. So particle crushing has significant influence on characteristics of strength and deformation. Trial embankment and hydrotest are conducted on Sabkha layer, consisting of carbonate sand to build tank structure. In this paper the settlement behavior was analyzed from each test. Particle crushing happened from 80 to 170kPa stress under compression test, and calcium was detected from chemical test. The test result came out Sabkha soil was very weak and easy to be crushing. About trial embankment test, particle crushing was not happen, and then extinction of pore water pressure and settlements were finished just during 2 days. On the other hand, the long-term settlement was happened in hydrotest. So the two test results did not correspond to each other. If loading stress is higher than yielding stress, instant settlement and secondary compression settlement are happened as a result of the particle crushing.

The aim of the research is improving the quality of concrete by using the alternative aggregate resources and recycling wastes. To make a combined aggregate fitted in standard particle size distribution curve, crushed sand from blasted rock debris was used as a base aggregate. Additionally, to increase the portion of fine particles, sea sand was mixed. Although these aggregate combination fit the standard particle size distribution curve, in this research, raw coal ash was replaced as a microfine. According to the experiment, by replacing 5% raw coal ash, the most favorable results were achieved in aggregate gradation and cement mortar quality.

Proper calculation of splitting tensile strength (STS) of concrete has been a crucial task, due to the wide use of concrete in the construction sector. Following many recent studies that have proposed various predictive models for this aim, this study suggests and tests the functionality of three hybrid models in predicting the STS from the characteristics of the mixture components including cement compressive strength, cement tensile strength, curing age, the maximum size of the crushed stone, stone powder content, sand fine modulus, water to binder ratio, and the ratio of sand. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network incorporates invasive weed optimization (IWO), cuttlefish optimization algorithm (CFOA), and electrostatic discharge algorithm (ESDA) which are among the newest optimization techniques. A dataset from the earlier literature is used for exploring and extrapolating the STS behavior. The results acquired from several accuracy criteria demonstrated a nice learning capability for all three hybrid models viz. IWO-MLP, CFOA-MLP, and ESDA-MLP. Also in the prediction phase, the prediction products were in a promising agreement (above 88%) with experimental results. However, a comparative look revealed the ESDA-MLP as the most accurate predictor. Considering mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) index, the error of ESDA-MLP was 9.05%, while the corresponding value for IWO-MLP and CFOA-MLP was 9.17 and 13.97%, respectively. Since the combination of MLP and ESDA can be an effective tool for optimizing the concrete mixture toward a desirable STS, the last part of this study is dedicated to extracting a predictive formula from this model.
