This study was performed to evaluate the chlorine ion penetration resistance, chemical resistance and freezing and thawing resistance used ordinary portland cement, crushed coarse aggregate, crushed sand, river sand, fly ash, limestone powder, blast furance slag powder and superplasticizer to find optimum mix design of low carbon green concrete for structures. The performance of low carbon green concrete used fly ash, limestone powder and blast furnace slag powder were remarkably improved. This fact is expected to have economical effects in the manufacture of low carbon green concrete for offshore structures. Accordingly, the fly ash, limestone powder and blast furnace slag powder can be used for offshore structure materials.

In order to determine the effect of the use of limestone sand on chloride ion ingress in mortar, specimens were cast with two different sands: siliceous sand (used as reference) and limestone crushed sand (used for this study). To compare and assess the resistance of this mortar to chloride penetration, two different diffusions tests were employed: slow migration and rapid migration (AASHTO test). In this study, calculation of the effective diffusion coefficient is proposed using a model based on Nernst. Planck equation. The diffusion coefficients from each sample were compared. The results for all tests show that the diffusion coefficients for siliceous sand mortar are larger than those obtained with limestone sand. It appears also that the diffusion coefficient varies as a function of the W/C ratio.
Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) method, which uses sand material, is frequently used in Korea. However, the use of sand for SCP faces environmental and economical problems with the shortage of its resources. Therefore, it is necessary to substitute other materials for compaction piles. One of the alternatives is using gravel in lieu of sand. Granular Pile, constituted with sand and crushed-stone, is one of the methods to improve soft clay and loose sandy ground. In this study, modeled pile load tests are performed in test cell. The observations are made on the consolidation and the variation of water table of three different grounds, original, sand pile installed, and granular pile installed ground. In addition, engineering characteristics such as bearing capacity, settlement and drainage are investigated. The test results show that Gravel Compaction Pile (GCP) is more efficient for increasing bearing capacity and reducing settlement than SCP and had similar pore water pressure dissipation to sand. Therefore, the results show that GCP can be a good substitution for SCP.
This paper recommends the alternative back-fill material for the pre-insulated pipe based on the results of tests performed using different kinds of backfill material. In this study, laboratory tests were preformed to determine the behavior of the pre-insulated pipe caused by variation on grain size distribution, friction characteristics and earth pressure characteristics of different types of backfill material. Two types of natural sand (fine-grained and coarse-grained sand) and crushed sand, and two types of gravel (10mm, 20mm) were used as backfill material in the laboratory tests. The laboratory test results were analyzed and compared with the pre-insulated pipe backfilled with the standard medium-grained sand. Based on the evaluation and comparison of laboratory test results, it was determined that crushed sand is the most suitable back-fill material that can be used as an alternative for medium grained sand for pre-insulated pipes.

Stone powder sludge is a byproduct of the crushed aggregate industry, and most of it is dumped with soil in landfills. The disposal of stone powder sludge presents a major environmental problem. This paper investigates the effects of stone powder sludge on the fluidity, density, strength and micro-structure properties of AAC(autoclaved aerated concrete) samples. Stone powder sludge was obtained from a crushed aggregate factory in order to investigate its applicability as a substitute for quartz sand in AAC. To determine the properties of the AAC samples produced with stone powder sludge, specimens containing different foam ratios were produced. Flow value, density, compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength of the samples were tested, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed. The test results indicated that the compressive strength of AAC specimens (F120) with stone powder sludge was higher than that of AAC specimens (Q120) with quartz sand for same foam ratio of 120%. For all XRD diagrams, a higher number of tobermorite peaks was shown for the F120 sample than for the Q120 sample, which may explain the slightly higher strength gain in the F120 sample.
In the companion paper (Paik 2006), a new formulation for calculating the nonlinearly distributed active earth pressure acting on a caisson backfilled with crushed rock and sand is proposed, and it takes into account arching effects as well as difference in internal friction angles and unit weights between sand and crushed rock. In this study, in order to partially check the accuracy of the proposed equation, the results of the proposed equation are compared with the equation proposed by Paik (2003a) for caissons with rough surface and homogeneous backfill, and are compared with results of Rankine's theory for caissons with smooth surface and homogeneous backfill. In addition, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of $phi_{r}$, $phi_{s}$, $\delta_{r}$, $\gamma_{r}$, $\gamma_{s}$ and $\beta$ on the magnitude of active earth pressure acting on the caisson, and construction methods for minimizing active earth pressure on the caisson are also provided based on the results of a parametric study.
Self-compacting concrete is widely used around the globe today due to its special and unique properties. This study examines the effect of natural and crushed gravel combinations in different percentages in short-and long-term properties of concrete. The best utilized sand had a fineness modulus of 2.7. In the mentioned mix designs, silica fume was used with 0 and 7% of the weight of the cement. In order to check the properties of fresh and hardened concrete, 9 and 5 test types were performed, respectively. The carried out tests were slump flow, V-funnel, J-ring, L-box, U-box and column segregation for fresh concrete, and compressive, tensile and flexural strengths for hardened concrete. A mix with only 100% natural gravel was considered as the control mix. According to the results, the control mix design and the one containing 100% crushed gravel with silica fume were the best in fresh and hardened concrete tests, respectively. Finally, using the optimization method, a mix design with 25% natural gravel, 75% crushed gravel and silica fume was introduced as the best mix in terms of the results of both fresh and hardened concrete tests.

Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) is a soil improvement method that a sand charge is introduced into the pipe, and the pipe is withdrawn part away while the sand pile is compacted and its diameter is enlarged. The sand used in this method should be of good quality. In Korea, crushed stone and washed sea sand are used frequently in SCP. However, use of these materials is restricted because of environmental problem and deficiency of supply. In the copper smelting process, about 0.7 million tons of copper slag are produced in Korea. The range of particle size distribution of copper slag is from 0.15mm to 5mm, so it can be a substitute for sand, and the relatively high specific gravity compared with the sand, is its characteristic. Copper slag is hyaline and so stable environmentally that in foreign country, such as Japan, Germany etc., it is widely used in harbor, revetment and offshore structure construction works. Therefore, in this study, the several laboratory tests were peformed to evaluate the applicability of copper slag as a substitute for sand of SCP. From the mechanical property test, the characteristics of sand and copper slag were compared and analyzed, and from laboratory model test, the strength of composite ground was compared and analyzed by monitoring the stress and ground settlement of clay, SCP and copper slag compaction pile. Specially, this study focused on the application of copper slag as sand substitute in SCP pilot tests based on laboratory tests results.

In this study, field tests were performed to evaluate the stability of pre-insulated pipe during the compaction operation and to recommend an alternative backfill material. Three types of natural sand (fine-grained and medium-grained, coarse-grained sand), crushed sand and two types of gravel (10 mm, 20 mm) were used as backfill material in the field tests. Field tests were performed to determine the behavior (earth-pressure and deformation, installation damage) of the pre-insulated pipe due to variation of different types of backfill material. Based on the evaluation and comparison of field test results, it was determined that crushed sand is the most suitable back-fill material that can be used as an alternative for medium grained sand for pre-insulated pipes with respect to the engineering behavior and material supply.

Recently, in the trend of using aggregate, it is common that coarse aggregate is replaced with crushed stone and fine aggregate is replaced with sea sand as a replacing aggregate. In this study, to judge the adaptability of using antiwashout underwater concrete, we used mixed sand (river sand : sea sand= 5 : 5) and changed W/C. After carrying out the research on the strength development of the compressive strength of specimen, tensile strength, fluxural strength which is produced and cured in the air and salt water, we founded that when W/C was low and the amount of AWA and SP were increased, the state of strength development was excellent.
