Melanin biosynthesis inhibitors are useful not only for the materials used in cosmetics as skin-whitening agents but also for the remedy of hyperpigmentation. In order to find the new skin-whitening compounds from the natural products. screening of tyrosinase inhibitory activity in vitro has been carried out. The EtOH extracts of two hundred crude drugs were performed at the concentration of 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. (omitted)

Objectives : This study aimed to reveal the characteristics of formulas in "Key to Therapeutics of Children's Diseases" by analysis of crude drugs that constitute formulas. Methods : To analyze the formulas, We classified the formulas to presenting symptom classification. And within that categories, the crude drugs in formulas were diagrammatized. Results : After those analyses, we brought a conclusion as like these. 1. The formulas classified into some categories that include chronic consumption disease, parasitization, digestive system disease, febricity, infectious disease, respiratory disease, skin disease, infirmity and etc. 2. We analyzed the characteristic of formulas by categorization of crude drug combination. In this way, we recognized that Qian Yi(錢乙) frequently used cold crude drugs unlike the trend of S$\grave{o}$ng(宋) dynasty doctors. 3. The prescription that described in "Key to Therapeutics of Children's Diseases" can be found in "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine(東醫寶鑑)" and the other books on posterity. Conclusions : Through these researches, we verified that Qian Yi affect cold herbal and mineral drugs. This tendency of Qian Yi have an effect on the Nourish yin school. And several decades of formulas of "Key to Therapeutics of Children's Diseases" contain in part of pediatrics on "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine". We reconfirmed that Qian Yi affected profound influence on the development of pediatrics and Nourish yin school.

To isolate biologically active compounds which exhibit tyrosinase inhibition activity and ultimately express skin whitening effect, 14 oriental herbal drugs were screened in ter ms of tyrosinase inhibition. For this purpose, in vitro enzyme assay system for tyrosinase, so called Pomerantz method with some modifications has been established. Crude methanolic extracts from 14 herbal drugs were made and examined for their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase. Those extracts from Cnidii Rhizoma, Arecae Semen, Caryophylli Flos, and Ephedrae Herba showed strong inhibitory activities on mushroom tyrosinase. Therefore, crude methanolic extracts from those 4 herbal drugs were further fractionated using ether, butanol and water. respectively. The ether and n-butanol extracts from Arecae Semen and the n-butanol and water extracts from Caryophylli Flos, respectively, showed relatively strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity compared to arbutin.

High performance liquid chromatographic separation is described for the analysis of bile acids after hydrolysis in seven commercial crude bile drugs and ox and pig galls. They are simultaneously separated with HPLC mobile phase of acetonitrile/0.5% ammonium carbonate (pH 6.7) (25.5 : 74.5) at a flow rate $(1.0{\rightarrow}1.5ml/min.)$ and differential refractometer. The linearity of calibration curve and recovery test are good by using the method. The analysis of major bile acids in seven commercial crude bile drugs using the described method is presented. Sample no. 1 of them is similar to separation pattern of ox gall. Sample no. 6 of them is supposed to be genuine bear gall on the basis of identification of ursodeoxycholic acid. Sample $no.\;2{\sim}5$ and 7 of them are supposed to be pig gall on the basis of identification of hyodeoxycholic acid which is a characteristic component of pig gall.

This study was carried out to determine the 11 organochlorine, 7 organophosphorus residual pesticides in 251 crude drugs. These residual pesticides in herbal drugs were extracted with acetonitrile and the extracts were cleaned up via LC-florisil solid phase extraction column. The prepared samples were assayed for pesticide residues using GC-ECD, NPD with capillary column and identified by GC-MSD. Recoveries were $63.9{\sim}111.5%$ in the organochlorine pesticides and $69.8{\sim}92.4%$ in the organophosphorus pesticides, and detection limits were $0.001{\sim}0.65\;ppm$ in the organochlorine pesticides and $0.0009{\sim}0.0074\;ppm$ in the organophosphorus pesticides. Pesticide residues were detected in 9 cases.

It was explained in detail that the present condition of herb culture in Japanese agriculture and the requirement of crude drugs of good and regulqr very hard hit by the market conditionof crude drugs taking ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) and Coptis Rhizome (Coptis japon-ica Makino) as examples. It is not too mach to say that the market is now under the control ofcrude drugs imported from China. The main current of herb culture in Japan will be the con-tract agriculture that the seedlings of good and regular quality are received and are cultivateduntil the enough time, and the farm products are directly handed to the medicinal company fol-lowing the example of zedoary (Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe) .

In order to estimate accurate originality of the important crude drugs, Gastrodia, Dendrobium, Bletilla and Cremastra spp. were investigated comparing their morphological, anatomical and physicochemical characteristics and antibacterial, antifungal activities. The results of the studies as follows: 1. In morphological and anatomical studies, Korean Gastrodia contained more mucilage duct and symbiotic fungi than imported Gastrodia. Korean Dendrobium contained starch grains but without starch grains in the imported Dendrobium from China enclosed with thicken silicified wall. The corm of Cremasta appendiculata contained raphides of bundles with mucilage while the bulbs of Tulipa edulis contained several various starch grains form. 2. In physiological and TLC analysis, crude drugs in Orchidaceae contained common constituents with fluorescence and much mucilage. 3. The EtOH extracts of Gastrodia, Dendrobium, Bletilla, Cremastra showed antibacterial activities against B. subtilis and E. coli (Dendrobium>Gastrodia>Bletilla>Cremastra). But, no antifungal activities against C. albicans, A. niger were observed.

A method using coloric and spectrophotometric detection have been developed for the identification of the tertiary or quaternary alkaloids contained in Corydalis tuber and its preparations. The principle is based on the formation or decomposition of complex compounds. The complex compound of the tertiary and quaternary alkaloids have been formed by adding tetrathiocyanatocobaltate [II] ion to the test soln. Diverse crude drugs were screened using this method and the results indicated that isoquinoline, aconitine-type alkaloids in crude drugs can be readily detected. The method is simple, convenient, reproducible and applicable to the verification of the crude drug Corydalis tuber and its preparations.
