Some lead-based crystals show excellent ferroelectric, piezoelectric or scintillation properties and have attracted much attention in recent years. However, the erosion of the high temperature solution on platinum crucible and the evaporation of PbO component are the main problems often encountered during the crystal growth. In this paper, we reported recent progress on the Bridgman growth of lead-based functional crystals, such as novel relaxor ferroelectric crystals (PZNT and PMNT), scintillation crystals $(PbWO_4,\;PbF_2\;and\;PbClF)$ and piezoelectric crystals $(Pb_5Ge_3O_{11}\;and\;Pb_2KNb_5O_{15}),$ in Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The vertical Bridgman method has been modified to grow PZNT crystals from high temperature solution and as-grown crystals have been characterized. Large size lead-based scintillators, $PbWO_4\;and\;PbF_2$ crystals, have been mass-produced by the vertical Bridgman method in the multi-crucible fumace. These crystals have been supplied to CERN and other laboratories for high-energy physics experiments. The Bridgman growth of piezoelectric crystals $Pb_5Ge_3O_{11}\;and\;Pb_2KNb_5O_{15}$ are discussed also.

The present research is focused on the effect of porous graphite what is influenced on the 4H-SiC crystal growth by PVT method. We expect that it produces more C-rich and a change of temperature gradient for polytype stability of 4H-SiC crystal as adding the porous graphite in the growth cell. The SiC seeds and high purity SiC source materials were placed on opposite side in a sealed graphite crucible which was surrounded by graphite insulator. The growth temperature was around $2100{\sim}2300^{\circ}C$ and the growth pressure was 10~30 Torr of an argon pressure with 5~15 % nitrogen. 2 inch $4^{\circ}$ off-axis 4H-SiC with C-face (000-1) was used as a seed material. The porous graphite plate was inserted on SiC powder source to produce a more C-rich for polytype stability of 4H-SiC crystal and uniform radial temperature gradient. While in case of the conventional crucible, various polytypes such as 6H-, 15R-SiC were observed on SiC wafers, only 4H-SiC polytype was observed on SiC wafers prepared in porous graphite inserted crucible. The defect level such as MP and EP density of SiC crystal grown in the conventional crucible was observed to be higher than that of porous graphite inserted crucible. The better crystal quality of SiC grown using porous graphite plate was also confirmed by rocking curve measurement and Raman spectra analysis.

Czochralski (CZ) growth process is one of the most important techniques for growing high quality sapphire single crystal for LED application. In this study, the inductively-heated CZ growth processes for the sapphire crystal of 300 mm length have been analyzed numerically using finite element method. The hot zone structures were modified with the crucible geometry change and the additional insulation layer installed above the crucible. The results show that the solid-liquid interface height decreased from about 80 mm at initial stage to 40 mm after mid-stage due to achieve the growth speed balance. Also the optimal input power of the modified system was similar with the original one due to the compensation effects of the crucible geometry and additional insulation. The crystal temperature grown by the modified CZ grower was increased about 10 K than the original one. Therefore the sapphire crystal of 300 mm height was grown successfully.

To lessen oxygen concentrations in a wafer through modifying the length of graphite heaters, we investigated the influence of relative distance from heater to quartz crucible on temperature profile of hot-zone in Czochralski silicon-crystal growth by simulation. In particular, ATC temperature and power profiles as a function of different ingot body positions were investigated for five different heater designs; (a) typical side heater (SH), (b) short side heater-up (SSH-up), (c) short side heater-low (SSH-low), (d) bottom heater without side heater (Only-BH), and (e) side heater with bottom heater (SH + BH). It was confirmed that lower short side heater exhibited the highest ATC temperature, which was attributed to the longest distance from triple point to heater center. In addition, for the viewpoint of energy efficiency, it was observed that the typical side heater showed the lowest power because it heated more area of quartz crucible than that of others. This result provides the possibility to predict the feed-forward delta temperature profile as a function of various heater designs.

LCC (Liquid cadmium cathode) is used for electrowinning in pyroprocessing to recover uranium and transuranic elements simultaneously. It is one of the core technologies in pyroprocessing with higher proliferation resistance than a wet reprocessing because LCC-cell does not separate TRU from uranium. The crucible which holds the LCC is technically important because it should be nonconducting material to prevent deposition of metallic elements on the crucible outer surface. The chemical stability is also crucial factor to choose crucible material due to the strong reactivities of TRU and possible incorporation of Li metal during the operation. In this study, the chemical stabilities of four kinds of representative ceramic materials such as $Al_2O_3$, MgO, $Yl_2O_3$ and BeO were thermodynamically and experimentally evaluated at $500^{\circ}C$ with simulated LCC. The contact angle of LCC on ceramic materials was measured as function of time to predict chemical reactivity. $All_2O_3$ showed poorest chemical stability and the pores in BeO contributed to a decreases in contact angle. MgO and $Y_2O_3$ have superior chemical stability among the materials.

This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the crucibles, potteries and roof tiles from the Wonsinheungdong site in Daejeon, Korea. Similar mineral composition of each samples showed by microscopic observation and X-ray diffraction analysis. However, wall thickness and mineral characterization of each ceramic artifacts are quite different. The pottery is characterized by thin wall with 0.5 to 0.7 cm and fine grained clay matrix. While the crucible and roof tile has thick wall with 1.3 to 2.5 cm, poorly sorted texture of many quarz, orthoclase and plagioclase whithin ceramic fabric. And large elonagated voids formed by hydrocarbone of straw during the firing and loose matrix obseved in crucible. All ceramic samples and ground soil of the site show similar mineralogical characteristics geochemical behavior and clay-mineralization degree. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 to $950^{\circ}C$ but hardest pottery fired high temperature between 1,050 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. The vitreous molten materials interpreted in slag included segregation of copper and tin. But it can not exclude the possibility that the glass molten material because observed reddish and greenish vitreous fine structure under microscopic.
As a basic study on the conversion of molten converter slag to the ordinary portland cement, the effects of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ addition on the interface reaction between solid CaO and molten converter slag has been studied. Alumina added converter slag whose basicity was controlled to 1 and 2 was melted and hold for 30 minutes in MgO crucible at $1500^{\circ}C$. Then sintered CaO pellet heated at the same temperature was dipped into the molten slag and held for 30minutes. After the reaction, the crucible was cooled in air and the specimen was cut off to the horizontal direction of the crucible. The dissolution rate of CaO pellet with the addition of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ was measured by the change of the radius or sintered CaO pellet and the interface layer was observed by SEM/EDX. As a result. At the basicity 2 slag, thickness of created $C_{3}S$ layer increased 3.5 times and quantity of $C_{6}AF_{2}\;or\;C_{4}AF$ phase increase 2 times than baisicy 1 slag.

Sapphire single crystals have been highlighted for epitaxial gallium nitride films in high-power laser and light emitting diode (LED) industries. Among the many crystal growth methods, the Kyropoulos process is an excellent commercial method for growing larger, high-optical-quality sapphire crystals with fewer defects. Because the properties and growth behavior of sapphire crystals are influenced largely by the temperature distribution and convection of molten sapphire during the manufacturing process, accurate predictions of the thermal fields and melt flow behavior are essential to design and optimize the Kyropoulos crystal growth process. In this study, computational fluid dynamic simulations were performed to examine the effects of the crucible geometry aspect ratio on melt convection during Kyropoulos sapphire crystal growth. The results through the evolution of various growth parameters on the temperature and velocity fields and convexity of the crystallization interface based on finite volume element simulations show that lower aspect ratio of the crucible geometry can be helpful for the quality of sapphire single crystal.
1. Objects The experiments of catalytic aharcoaling were carried out for the fallowing purposes. (1) To determine the economically desirable amount of catalytic materials to be used when a catalytic charcoaling is practiced. (2) To observe the rate of carbonization of non-treated charcoal wood when the catalytic charcoaling is proceeded in the same charcoal pit. 2. Meterials (1) Small sample chips made of oak (Q. accutissima Carr.), measured by 0.5cm in width and thickness, respectively, and 1cm in length, were used as charcoal wood in each experiment. (2) Ammonium chloride was used as a catalytic material and electric kiln as a charcoaling apparatus. 3. Experiment (1) The sample chips were put into a electric oven for three hours at the temperature $60^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ in order to reduce some water contents. (2) Oven dried sample chips were then soaked for an hour in solution of ammonium chloride. Three kinds of solution were prepared, that is, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, solution in which the amount of ammonium chloride used was weighed at the rate of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% to the total weight of the sample chips, resppectivelly. (3) Soaked sample chips were put in the air for 12 hours to reduce some water contents, and then were put into electric oven for 2 hours at the temperature $105^{\circ}{\sim}110^{\circ}C$. (4) Dried sample chips were kept in a desiccator with control sample chips which were treated excarly the same process as the treated sample chips except only not using the ammonium chloride in the process of soking. (5) Sample chips kept in the desiccator were used at random in each charcoaling experiment. (6) Charcoaling in the electric kiln were carried out by using small crucibles with complete cover to reduce the amount of ash. At each charcoaling experiment four crucibles filled with sample ships, weighed about 20gr, were put into electric kiln. The charcoaling was continued for an hour at the temperature $400^{\circ}{\sim}450^{\circ}C$. (7) In order to investigate the influence given by the gases produced during the catalytic charcoaling to the rate of carbonization of non-treated sample chips, the following experiment was done. (a) A crueible was divided into two parts by inserting a fine iron net at the middle of the crucible, and then non-treated sample chips, weighed about 10gr, were put in the upper part of the crucible and treated sample chips, weighed also about 10gr, were put in the under part. (b) The crucibles filled with two kinds of sample chips were put into a electric kiln for an hour at the temperature $400^{\circ}{\sim}450^{\circ}C$. 4. Results. Results for two replications (with four crucibles in one replication) for each experiment designed are as follows : (1) The rats of carbonization of the non treated sample chips, and that of the treated sample chips with ammonium chloride at the rate of 1.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% to the total weight of the sample chips used were averaged at 19.85%, 22.63%, 24.14%, and 26.60%, respectively. (2) The rats of carbonization of the non-treated sample chips were averaged at (a) 20.04% (0.5% treatment), (b) 20.28% (1.0% treatment), and (c) 20.61% (2.0% treatment) when the treated sample chips were carbonized in the same crucible.
