Comparison of growth performance between crossbred Korean native chickens for hatch to 28 days (육성기 교배조합 토종닭 간의 성장률 비교에 관한 연구)

  • The study was conducted to determine the effect of corssbred Korean native chickens (CKNC) on growth performance indices for hatch to 28 days. A total of 192 1-day-old birds were divided into one of 4 CKNC groups by 5 Korean native pure strains. Diets used in the study consisted of 2 phases with corn and soybean meal basis as earlier (1~2 weeks; crude protein 18.5%, metabolizable energy 3,000 kcal/kg), and grower (2~4 weeks; crude protein 15.0%, Metabolizable Energy 2,850 kcal/kg). Body weight and feed intake were measured bi-weekly. Crossbred 1G (group of family line) had higher body weight and average daily gain whereas crossbred 5Y had greater average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio than other crossbred Korean native chicken for hatch to 28 days. The results in the current study indicated that crossbred 1G had higher growth performance indices compared with other crossbred Korean native chicken for hatch to 28 days.

Differences in Physicochemical and Nutritional Properties of Breast and Thigh Meat from Crossbred Chickens, Commercial Broilers, and Spent Hens

  • The objective of this study was to compare the physicochemical and nutritional properties of breast and thigh meat from commercial Chinese crossbred chickens (817 Crossbred chicken, 817C), imported commercial broilers (Arbor Acres broiler, AAB), and commercial spent hens (Hyline Brown, HLB). The crossbred chickens, commercial broilers and spent hens were slaughtered at their typical market ages of 45 d, 40 d, and 560 d, respectively. The results revealed that several different characteristic features for the three breeds. The meat of the 817C was darker than that of the other two genotypes. The 817C were also characterized by higher protein, lower intramuscular fat, and better texture attributes (cooking loss, pressing loss and Warner-Bratzler shear force [WBSF]) compared with AAB and HLB. The meat of the spent hens (i.e. HLB) was higher in WBSF and total collagen content than meat of the crossbred chickens and imported broilers. Furthermore, correlation analysis and principal component analysis revealed that there was a clear relationship among physicochemical properties of chicken meats. With regard to nutritional properties, it was found that 817C and HLB exhibited higher contents of essential amino acids and essential/non-essential amino acid ratios. In addition, 817C were noted to have highest content of microelements whereas AAB have highest content of potassium. Besides, 817C birds had particularly higher proportions of desirable fatty acids, essential fatty acids, polyunsaturated/saturated and (18:0+18:1)/16:0 ratios. The present study also revealed that there were significant differences on breast meat and thigh meat for the physicochemical and nutritional properties, regardless of chicken breeds. In conclusion, meat of crossbred chickens has some unique features and exhibited more advantages over commercial broilers and spent hens. Therefore, the current investigation would provide valuable information for the chicken meat product processing, and influence the consumption of different chicken meat.

Estimation of Heterosis for Some Economic Traits in Crossbreds between Korean Native Chicken and Rhode Island Red I.   • This study was conducted to estimate the hatching and growing performance, and heterosis of Korean Native Chicken(KNC), Rhode Island Red(RIR) and KNC XRIR crossbred. A total of 1,274 female pullets were produced from KNC, RIR and KNC x RIR crossbred kept in National Live-stock Research Institute, Korea. The experiment was conducted for 20 weeks from Sep. 2, 1995 to Jan. 20,1996. Hatchabilities of KNC dark brown strain x RlR(DR), KNC light brown strain x RlR (LR) and KNC dark black strain x RlR(BR) were 77.3%, 73.6% and 72.5%, respectively. Viabilities up to 20 weeks of age were not significantly (P>0.05) different among purebreds and crossbred. Body weights of DR, LR and BR were 1,890 g, 1,849 g and 1,967 g, respectively, at 20 weeks of age. The feed conversion ratio(feed /gain) of DR, LR, and BR were 5.88, 6.07 and 5.87, respectively, up to 20 weeks of age. Average shank lengths of DR, LR and BR were 97.1 mm, 98.9 mm and 99.4 mm, respectively, at 20 weeks of age. The heterosis effects were estimated to be -0. 48%, and 12.58%, respectively, in fertility and hatchability. Up to 20 weeks of age, the heterosis effects were estimated to be 0.07%, 13.49%, -5.77%, and 3.52% in viability, body weight, feed conversion ratio, and shank length, respectively.

Glucose Kinetics for Milk Synthesis in Etawah Crossbred Goats Fed King Grass Silage Prepared with Manure

  • A study was carried out to determine glucose kinetics, nutrient balance and milk production of lactating Etawah crossbred goats. The animals (27.2 to 29.1 kg BW) were randomly divided into four levels of dietary treatment groups: the first group R1 received 100% (3 kg) fresh king grass (Penisetum purpuroides), the second group R2 received 75% king grass and 25% king grass silage prepared with chicken manure, the third group R3 received 50% king grass and 50% silage, and the fourth group R4 received 100% silage. In addition to the roughage, each group received 800 g of concentrate (CP 14.77% of DM; 17.26 MJ/kg). Animals fed king grass silage made with chicken manure were found to be superior to the group fed king grass alone. Glucose kinetics and retained energy were significantly affected. Calculations showed that glucose requirements for maintenance and milk production can be met for the groups with high levels of silage (R3 and R4). The values of glucose flux were in the range of 2.52 to 4.50 mg/min.kg $BW^{0.807}$ which are lower, but close to, the values for the temperate lactating dairy cow. The present glucose flux value for the lactating Etawah crossbred goat is higher than the previous value published from this laboratory.

  • Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) of commercial broiler (CB) and crossbred village chicken (AK) was purified using Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC). The fraction collected was then confirmed as VLDL using 4% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The particle size of VLDL is 46.8${\pm}$8.6 nm. The VLDL fraction was then subfractionated and the apolipoprotein (apo) profile was studied by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDSPAGE). The CB and AK have almost similar types of apo in both subfractions 1 and 2. The AK showed the presence of apoAI, AIV, D and E whereas the CB had apo AIV, D, E and H. The apo AIV and apo E were present in both subfractions of AK and CB.

Genome-wide association study for the free amino acid and nucleotide components of breast meat in an F2 crossbred chicken population

  • Flavor is an important sensory trait of chicken meat. The free amino acid (FAA) and nucleotide (NT) components of meat are major factors affecting meat flavor during the cooking process. As a genetic approach to improve meat flavor, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify the potential candidate genes related to the FAA and NT components of chicken breast meat. Measurements of FAA and NT components were recorded at the age of 10 weeks from 764 and 767 birds, respectively, using a White leghorn and Yeonsan ogye crossbred F2 chicken population. For genotyping, we used 60K Illumina single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips. We found a total of nine significant SNPs for five FAA traits (arginine, glycine, lysine, threonine content, and the essential FAAs and one NT trait (inosine content), and six significant genomic regions were identified, including three regions shared among the essential FAAs, arginine, and inosine content traits. A list of potential candidate genes in significant genomic regions was detected, including the KCNRG, KCNIP4, HOXA3, THSD7B, and MMUT genes. The essential FAAs had significant gene regions the same as arginine. The genes related to arginine content were involved in nitric oxide metabolism, while the inosine content was possibly affected by insulin activity. Moreover, the threonine content could be related to methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. The genes and SNPs identified in this study might be useful markers in chicken selection and breeding for chicken meat flavor.

A Comparison of Reproductive Ability on Various Korean Native Chicken (한국재래닭의 계통별 번식능력 비교)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of semen on reproductive ability in crossbred Korean native chicken (KNC, 58-wk old). The body weight, volume of semen and concentration of spermatozoa, were 2.96 g, 0.40 ml, $36.58{\times}10^8/ml$, respectively, in KNC. The fertility and hatchability were 94.8% and 78.8% respectively in crossbred KNC. KNC(Y) was high compared to other strains in fertility. The other strains were not significantly different among 6 strains. The results of this experiment indicated that hatchability of (G) was high compared to other strains. The result of this study could be available to genetic improvement of reproductive traits as a basic reference in KNC strains. To achieve the more effective improvement of reproductive traits, addition research such as genetic parameter evaluation should be performed.

The Performance Test in Crossbreds of Korean Native Chickens for the Establishment of New Lines (새로운 계통 조성을 위한 한국 토종닭 교배 조합의 능력 검정)

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of crossbred strains using Korean native chicken (KNC). The data were collected from 2012 through 2013 at Poultry Science Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Korea. The number of chicks analyzed in this study was 375. Crossbred were (A) $R{\times}S$, (B) $D{\times}H$, (C) $D{\times}S$, (D) $C{\times}Y$ and (E) $Y{\times}H$. The fertility rates of strains were 94.9% in crossbred A, 91.9% in crossbred B, 91.8% in crossbred C, 89.7% in crossbred D and 93.8% in crossbred E, respectively. The fertility was highest in crossbred A, but crossbred C showed the lowest (p<0.05) based on the hatchability. The crossbreds B and C exhibited a superior performance on body weight gains during growing stages but crossbred D showed the lowest (p<0.05). The feed intake was to the pattern of body weight. The feed intake of crossbred D was significantly lower than other crossbreds. Also, feed conversion ratio of crossbred D showed the lowest (p<0.05). Egg production ratio of crossbred D was significantly higher compared to the other crossbreds. These results suggest that the development of new crossbreds of commercial Korean Native Chickens should be required for better performance.

Productivity and Meat Quality of the New Crossbred Korean Native Chickens Compared with Commercial Breeds (신품종 교배조합 토종닭의 생산성과 육질 및 시판 품종과의 비교분석)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the productivity and meat quality of three newly-developed crossbreds of Korean native chicken (2A, 2C, and 2D) as compared with commercial Korean native chicken (CKNC) and commercial broiler. Totally, 400 birds of different crossbreds were randomly allotted to eight pens, each with 50 birds. The birds were reared ad libitum and slaughtered at the age of 12 weeks. Fifty male chickens were slaughtered at the same day in the same slaughterhouse were selected for the comparison of meat quality. The crossbred 2C had greater body weight than that of CKNC (P<0.05), and had similar uniformity with lower death rate. Although shank length of 2C was the longest among the Korean native chicken breeds, the ratio of shank length to body weight was the lowest among them (P<0.05). The crossbred 2C had similar inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) content as that of CKNC in breast meat, and the highest IMP content in thigh meat (P<0.05). In a sensory analysis, the crossbred 2C generally showed, similar savory taste and texture as that of CKNC, and the overall acceptability of thigh meat was the highest in CKNC and broiler. Based on the present results, the possibility of commercialization of a newly-developed crossbred of Korean native chicken was confirmed.

Comparative study of growth performances of six different Korean native chicken crossbreeds from hatch to twelve weeks of age

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth performance indices among male commercial crossbred Korean native chickens from hatch to twelve weeks of age. A total of 312 one-day-old male birds were used for 6 groups of the commercial crossbred Korean native chicken within 1 paternal line and 6 maternal lines (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A). The chickens were allocated to 24 battery cages to give 4 replicates per each crossbreed with 13 chickens per cage. Ad-libitum feeding was practiced throughout the experimental period and fresh water was available via nipple drinkers at all times. Body weight and feed intake were measured at two-week interval. Among six crossbreeds, the 2A group had the greatest (p < 0.05) body weight at week 8 and the greatest average daily weight gain in week 6 - 8. However, crossbreed 2A had the lowest viability (p < 0.05) at week 8 of all crossbreed groups as well as higher uniformity (p > 0.05) at week 2 than the others. No difference (p < 0.05) was found in any crossbreed Korean native chicken's growth performance indices including body weight, average daily gain, average daily feed intake, feed efficiency, uniformity, and viability after week 8. With this in mind, crossbreed 2A had greater bodyweight, average daily gain, average feed intake, and feed efficiency than the other Korean native chickens 84 days after hatch, although they had lower uniformity and viability than the others.
