  • The program which could determine cross-sectional dimension of the prestressed concrete box girder bridges at the stage of preliminary design was developed using the optimal technique in this study. It could minimize the cost required in the design of box girder bridges and the construction with the full staging method. Objective cost function consisted of six independent variables such as height of cross-section, jacking force and thickness of web and bottom flange. The SUMT(Sequntial Unconstrained minimization Technique) was used to solve the constrained nonlinear minimization optimal problem. Using the program developed in this study, optimum design was performed for existing bridges with one cell cross section of constant depth. The result verify the compatibility of the program.

  • The optimum cross-sectional area profile of gas-cooled high-temperature superconductor(HTS) current lead is analyzed to have minimum helium boil-off rate. The conventional constant area HTS lead has much higher helium consumption than the optimum HTS lead considered in this study. The optimum HTS lead has variable cross-sectional area to have constant satiety factor. An analytical formula of optimum shape of lead and temperature profile are obtained. For multi-stacking HTS current leads, the optimum tape lengths and minimum heat dissipation rate are also formulated. The developed formulations are applied to the Bi-2223 material, and the differences between constant area, constant safety-factor, and multi-stacking current leads are discussed.

  • The process of styrofoam pattern that has been used for material of press die pattern depends chiefly on handwork. Laser manufacturing system developed to increase precision and efficiency of process that is also able to convert the design easily. Applying the RP(rapid prototyping) concept reversely, the unnecessary part of section is vapored away by heat source of laser beam after converting 3-D CAD model into cross-sectional shape information. Laser beam is line-scanned in plane specimens to measure the depth and width of cut, surface roughness, cross-sectional shape as converting laser power, scanning speed, cutting gas pressure. With these basic data, plane surface, inclined surface, hole, outer contour trimming process is experimented and optimum condition are obtained. In plane and inclined surface experiments, 15W laser power and 50mm/s scanning speed make superior processing property and 30W, 10mm/s make processing efficiency increase in trimming process. With these results, simple patterns were manufactured and the possibility of applying laser manufacturing system to styrofoam pattern was convinced.

  • Numerous studies showed that safety and serviceability of many concrete infrastructures and buildings built in 1970's have capacity less than their design capacities and thereby require immediate retrofitting. Currently, these aged concrete structure are being repaired using many repair and strengthening methods developed in the past. Therefore, in this study, a repairing and strengthening method for retrofitting high strength concrete columns that can effectively improve the performance of high strength concrete columns is developed. The square high strength concrete column's cross-sectional shape is modified to octagonal shape by attaching precast members on the surface of the column. Then, the octagonal column surface is wrapped using Carbon Fiber Sheets (CFS). The method allowed the maximum usage of confinement effect of externally wrapped CFS, which resulted in improved strength and ductility of repaired high strength concrete columns.

  • Neutron radiography has been widely used in many research areas due to its different characteristics from X-rays. Neutron tomography is a powerful tool because it can clearly show the inside of an object that the eye cannot see. However, generally, commercial software is used for the reconstruction of neutron tomography. It means that maintenance costs are incurred and analysis is inefficient in some cases. In this respect, our own image processing code is required to reconstruct neutron images efficiently. In this study, an image processing code is developed for reconstruction of cross-sectional images from neutron radiography taken from the side of the object. Using the developed code, cross-sectional images of the sample are successfully reconstructed.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined sarcopenia in middle-aged men aged 40 to 49 years. METHODS: The study design was a nationwide cross-sectional study involving 1,564 participants. The participants were divided into two groups based on their skeletal muscle mass index scores, with 36 and 1,528 individuals classified into the sarcopenia and normal groups, respectively. The variables examined included age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The results from blood tests included fasting glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels. The smoking and drinking status were also recorded. RESULTS: The anthropometric variables, such as weight, BMI, and waist circumference, revealed significant differences between the two groups (p < .05), except for height (p > .05). In addition, total cholesterol in the laboratory test and drink status were significant between the two groups (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study identified significant determinants for sarcopenia among community-dwelling middle-aged men.

  • The purpose of this study was to give a guideline for selecting the nickel-titanium (NiTi) file by review from many studies. Since the early 1990s, several instrument systems manufactured from NiTi have been introduced into endodontic practice. The specific design characteristics vary, such as tip shape and size, cross sectional view, helix angle, and pitch space. Some of the early systems have been removed from the market or play only minor roles; others are still widely used. New designs continually are produced, but the extent to which clinical outcomes will depend on design characteristics is difficult to forecast. In this study, I have reviewed the different design characteristics in respect of the safety and efficiency. With the review from many studies, I concluded that the clinicians must be understand the specific design characteristics for selecting the ideal NiTi rotary instruments.

  • Topology optimization has been widely used for the optimal structure design for weight reduction and high performance. Since the result of three-dimensional topology optimization is represented by the discrete material distribution in finite elements, it is hard to interpret from a design point of view. In this paper, the method for interpreting three-dimensional topology optimization resuIt into a series of cross-sectional curve representation is proposed and interfaced with the existing CAD system for the practical use. The concept of node density and virtual grid is introduced to transform element density values into grid density and material boundaries in each cross section are identified based on the element volume rate to satisfy the amount of material specified in the original design intent. Design exampIes show that three-dimensional topology result can be converted into a form of curve CAD model and the seamless interface with CAD software can be achieved.

  • A structural design based of finite element analysis has been performed to investigate the reliable automatic transport system. For the procedure, different cross-sectional geometric factors were calculated and compared in detail. The von-Mises stresses were chosen to maintain a solid loading braring capacity for the safe design. Parametric studies showed that it is more inportant for the plate bending problem than the vertical loads of hanging bar to assess the safe and economic structural design.
