Influences of Workplace Bullying, Social Support and Resilience on Retention Intention among Hospital Nurses: The Mediating Effect of Professional Quality of Life (병원간호사의 직장 내 괴롭힘, 사회적 지지, 회복탄력성이 재직의도에 미치는 영향: 전문직 삶의 질의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of professional quality of life among hospital nurses in the effects of workplace bullying, social support and resilience on retention intention. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on 414 hospital nurses who worked for at least two months at a general hospital in the Seoul metropolitan area. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 23.0/AMOS 22.0 programs and employed reliability verification, descriptive statistics include frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping. Results: As a result of the study's structural modeling verification, workplace bullying had a negative effect, social support had a positive effect, resilience had a positive effect on professional quality of life, and professional quality of life had a positive effect on retention intention. Also, workplace bullying, social support, and resilience did not directly impact on retention intention. However, the professional quality of life had a complete mediating effect in the relationships between workplace bullying, social support, resilience and retention intention. The study results verified the mediating effect of professional quality of life affecting the retention intention. Conclusion: In order to improve professional quality of life and retention intention, strategies to prevent workplace bullying and promote social support and resilience are needed.

A Comparative Study Recognition of Future Career and Nurse's Characteristics According to Nursing School System (학제에 따른 진로인식, 간호사자질인식의 비교연구)

  • This study was to compare the recognition of future career and nurse's characteristics according to nursing school system. This study was based on cross sectional descriptive method. The data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, and ANOVA using PASW WIN 18.0 program. The data represented that students who were doing associated degrees or bachelor degrees, showed the similar level recognition of future career and nurse's characteristics. However they showed differences in recognition of the career where they could create and new things(t=2.933, p=.004) and working part time(t=2.328, p=.021). In regards to recognition of nurse's characteristics bachelor degrees students had higher professional ethics($4.59{\pm}.44$). This study proposed that these research results could be used for improving methodology of nursing education.

A Study on Relationship between Recovery Experience and the Burnout among Hospital Nurses (병원간호사의 직무 스트레스 회복경험과 소진과의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the relationship between recovery experience and the burnout among hospital nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. The participants were 281 nurses working at three general hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The data were collected by convenience sampling using self-reported questionnaires that consisted of general characteristics, burnout, recovery experiences, self-efficacy, social support, job demand and organizational system. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Stepwise multiple regression showed that organizational system had the greatest impact on hospital nurses' burnout, followed by job demand, self efficacy, position and recovery experience. Conclusion: Recovery experience is found to be a new factor that influences the burnout among hospital nurses. Therefore, further research is needed for confirming that recovery experience influences the burnout of hospital nurses. Also there is a need to develop a program to increase recovery experience from job stress at the organizational level to reduce hospital nurses' burnout.

Factors Discriminating Nurses′ Depression among Personal and Environmental Characteristics (간호사우울에 대한 개인특성 및 직무특성요소들의 판별예측력)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of depression experienced by Korean hospital nurses (N=198) and to identify discriminating factors of their depression experience among personal and environmental characteristics. Method: A cross-sectional survey design was used to answer the research questions. A sample consisted of 198 hospital nurses in Korea. The data were collected from May 1999 to March 2000. Descriptive and discriminant analyses were utilized. Result: Korean nurses experienced low levels of depression. Twenty nine percent of nurses in the study experienced depression based on the cut-point suggested by Radloff. Role ambiguity, working in the tertiary hospital, work satisfaction in autonomy, professional status and interaction within nurses were significant discriminating factors for nurses' depression. Self-Esteem of the Schooler of Families in Poverty (빈곤가족에서의 학령기 아동의 자존감 - 제주도내 초등학교 아동을 중심으로 -)

  • The Purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence the self-esteem of the schooler of families in poverty. A descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study design was used. The data were collected from February to March, 2001. Convenient sampling was done from 194 subjects living in Jeju Do, but 167 subjects among these were used for the study analysis. Hierarchical Stepwise Regression was used to identify significant factors. The results of this study were as follows: In general, self-esteem status of the schooler in poor families was relatively poor. In stepwise regression analysis, self-esteem status was significantly influenced by emotional home environment, duration of poverty and frequency of parent-child tactics. These variables explained 26.8% of the variance of schooler's self-esteem. Conclusively, it is recommended that nursing intervention programs for schooler in poor family should be a focus to enhance the economic context as well as family effect.

The Effects of Lifestyle Factors on Metabolic Syndrome among Adolescents (청소년의 대사증후군에 대한 생활습관 요인의 영향)

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effects of lifestyle factors in metabolic syndrome among adolescents. The metabolic syndrome has been reported as a cause of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes in adolescents. Method: This study is a cross-sectional study on 1,931 adolescents (1,011 boys and 920 girls) aged 12-19 years from the Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test, and logistic regression in consideration of strata, cluster, and weight as national data. Result: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adolescents aged 12-19 years was 4.3% (Boys, 5.4%; Girls, 3.1%). Among lifestyle factors, BMI had significants influences on the metabolic syndrome risk, but other variables did not. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that further research is necessary on the effect of lifestyle factors in metabolic syndrome and that school health nurses should focus on implementation of effective programs for promotion of activity and healthy foods for prevention and intervention of metabolic syndrome.

Pediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude towards Management of Children's Postoperative Pain (아동병동 간호사의 수술 후 통증 관리에 대한 지식과 태도)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe pediatric nurses' knowledge and attitude towards management of children's postoperative pain. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, the participants were 220 pediatric nurses who worked at a general hospital in Seoul. The survey questionnaires used to assess the nurses' knowledge and attitude regarding children's postoperative pain were developed for this study. Results: The average score for knowledge was 67.7 out of 100. The mean score for attitude was 72.5 out of 100. The factor related to the knowledge level was education for pain management. Moreover, age, working department, position, working experience, education level, and number of children were associated with the attitude. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested the need for a systematic education program for pain management of children in the postoperative condition.

The Influence of Chronotype and Self-Efficacy on Problem Drinking in Undergraduate Students (대학생의 일주기리듬 유형과 자기효능감이 문제음주에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify the influence of chronotype and self-efficacy on drinking problem in undergraduate students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was adopted for the 177 undergraduate students in D, G, and K city in 2017. The data was analyzed for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 18.0 program. Results: Chronotype (${\beta}=-.31$, p< .001), self-efficacy (${\beta}=27$, p< .001) and religion (${\beta}=-.19$, p= .005) were identified as the factors influencing drinking problem in the subjects. The model explained 19% of variance in drinking problem (F= 11.36, p< .001). Conclusion: It is necessary to develop and apply a program that would consider chronotype and self-efficacy factors to reduce the drinking problem in undergraduate students.

Influence of Psychosocial Factors on Energy Drink Consumption in Korean Nursing Students: Never-consumers versus Ever-consumers

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the status of caffeine-containing energy drink consumption among Korean nursing students and to identify associated psychological factors. Methods: In total, 187 Korean nursing students participated in this cross-sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to identify participants' general characteristics and psychosocial factors (self-esteem, academic stress, depression, and college adjustment) associated with energy drink consumption. Data were analyzed with SPSS using descriptive statistics, the $x^2$ test, the t-test, and logistic regression. Results: More than two-thirds (73.3%) of the participants had consumed energy drinks. Among the investigated psychological factors, depression appeared to most strongly influence energy drink consumption behaviors in this population. Conclusion: The consumption of caffeine-containing energy drinks was found to be common among nursing students preparing to become health care professionals; depressed nursing students were more likely to have consumed energy drinks than non-depressed students. Nursing educators should emphasize the early detection of unhealthy beverage consumption habits and provide appropriate education to enhance healthy behaviors in future health care professionals.
