  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the setting and directions of cross-curricular learning topics based on research on experts' recognition of cross-curricular learning topics. The study method adopted was Delphi, and the subjects selected were curricular experts. This study has drawn following results: first, regarding the essence and problems of cross-curricular learning topics, even among the experts, there is no opinion agreed about cross-curricular learning topics' concept, essence, or characters. Second, more detailed discussion is demanded to select cross-curricular learning topics and set up a guideline about the operation. Third, it is needed to examine closely if presently suggested cross-curricular learning topics are duplicated or not and consider related subjects connected with those cross-curricular learning topics to improve education more systematically. Fourth, it is necessary to conduct more profound and systematic research on core competence that can embrace those cross-curricular learning topics. Fifth, to cope with changes in society and demands at school, it is needed to discuss how cross-curricular learning topics should be added or which learning topics should be added.

  • In order to prepare for changes in future society, cross-curricular learning is emphasized, and the need to link cross-curricular learning topics and subjects is increasing. However, there are few studies on how to deal with cross-curricular learning in mathematics education. This study analyzed the contents and methods of cross-curricular learning topics in subject-specific curriculum and mathematics textbooks. As a result of the study, the curriculum can be categorized into four types according to the variety of cross-curricular learning topics applied and the presence or absence of a main cross-curricular learning topic, and the mathematics curriculum belongs to the type where some cross-curricular learning topics are dealt with passively and there is no main topic. On the other hand, the analysis of 10 math textbooks for grades 5 and 6 according to the 2015 revised curriculum showed that, unlike the curriculum, various cross-curricular learning topics were applied in the textbooks, mainly environment and sustainable development education, safety and health education, career education, character education, and economic and financial education. In addition, in mathematics textbooks, cross-curricular learning topics appeared in various types such as materials, questions, explanations, illustrations, and in many cases, they appeared mainly as materials or illustrations. Based on these findings, implications were explored and suggested on how to integrate and apply cross-curricular learning topics in mathematics.

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop several types of English teaching/learning models in view of cross-curricular approach in Korean elementary school. Brewster(1992)' model is suitable for younger children as well as the 1st or 2nd graders. For 3rd or 4th graders, Halliwel1(1997)' model seems more proper type in Korean EFL situation. There has been studying for cross-curricular approach in elementary English education. Many studies has recently focused the characteristics of elementary students by cognitive and psychological perspectives. Among them, Park(1996)'s research talks about the elementary school students. Han(1996)'s research based on the notion of applied to other subjects. Kim(1999)'s also emphasized the importance of linking other subjects. Kim(2003) argued the need of integrating English with other subjects. The elementary education as the National Common Basic Curriculum(NCBC) has the essence of cross-curricular approach, so the English education will be linked with other subject matters more and more, not just as for Communicative function based English education but as both content and function based subject matter.

  • Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of cases that have formed and operated teachers' learning communities through cross-curricular consulting at the school level. The purpose of this study is to explore cross-curricular instructional consulting as an activity of teachers' learning communities at the school level, and investigate the effect of cross-curricular instructional consulting on middle school science teaching. We analyzed features and limitations of cross-curricular instructional consulting revealed in three case studies in middle school, including open classes and instructional consulting sessions, and conducted additional instructional consulting on the same videotaped science classes with science experts from outside. According to the results, science inquiry experiments are often replaced with text reading and interpreting, students' misconceptions and exact scientific representations are ignored, and the goal setting as well as class coverage has been questionable and disputable in science classes resulted from cross-curricular instructional consulting. Discussed in the conclusion are the necessity of cross-curricular instructional consulting in middle school, and ways to overcome limitations of the method of cross-curricular instructional consulting, including alternatives to a praise-only policy in cross-curricular instructional consulting, ways to use cross-curricular instructional consulting without compromising the subject's essence, and ways to improve the undue authority of consultants.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of National Science Curricula in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, and Korea with respect to core competencies. In the case of overseas countries, literature review on their curricula was conducted, and four common features were extracted: 'association of cross-curricular competencies with science-specific competencies', 'a combination of science contents and scientific practices', 'an emphasis on communication skills', and 'representation of an achievement level of competency'. In addition, the common core competencies of science education were 'critical thinking', 'creative thinking', 'problem solving', 'inquiry skills', 'communication skills', 'cultural literacy', 'ability to integrate discipline', 'application skills', and 'personal/social competency'. In relation to these features, this study also investigated Korean science teachers' perceptions of core competencies in science education. A survey was conducted on 135 teachers in elementary, middle, and high school in Korea. Teachers were not well aware of what core competencies are, and after introduction, they thought that they wanted to and needed to teach core competencies to their students. Teachers claimed that critical core competencies in science education are 'creative thinking', 'problem solving', and 'inquiry skills'. Teachers thought that core competencies-based science class would help develop students' scientific literacy and communication skills. However, they have difficulties in conducting core competencies-based science class because they are not familiar with how to conduct the class and they expect that it will take a long time to prepare such a class.

  • Since 2011, when the Korean government initiated STEAM education in schools, many STEAM programs have been developed and many researches on STEAM education have been published in Korea. This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of STEAM education by calculating effect sizes using statistics from 177 studies that reported their efforts in examining the effectiveness of STEAM programs. The findings of this study are the followings: 1)the total mean effect size of STEAM education is above medium level(effect size=.69). 2)Mean effect sizes of all four effect factors are above medium level, .58-.74. Mean effect sizes are .65 for STEAM interests, .74 for STEAM capacity, .63 for STEAM academic achievement, and .58 for STEAM careers. 3)The mean effect size of STEAM education in middle schools is significantly higher than in other school levels. This result suggests that STEAM education is more effective in middle schools.

  • An important element to consider in information subjects is problem solving skills. It is problem solving skills that emphasize "practical usage of learning" in which knowledge of information subjects is integrated along with the cross curricular characteristics of the information subjects. What is usually considered paramount in a subject is knowledge, so the question is, should problem solving be considered more important in information subjects? This study discusses the foundation of subjects based on knowledge in information science, and the specifics of the 2014 amendment to the U.K. curriculum. And based on the core subjects of the U.K. curriculum, this study also offers educational implications as to how knowledge and problem solving skills should be discussed.

But new programme of study was changed more than that of former curriculum in terms of its formation and content. Programme of study for primary school is organized with curriculum aims, the importance of areas of learning, essential knowledge, key skills, cross-curricular studies, breadth of learning and curriculum progression. On the other hand, that of geography for KS3 is organized with curriculum aims, the importance of geography, key concepts, key processes, range and content, curriculum opportunities.
