  • In order to breed a new Pleurotus eryngii cultivar with a large pileus and convex shape, which are favorite traits of customers from Europe and North America, single crosses between monokaryotic mycelia derived from basidiospores of KNR2555 were performed to yield the new cultivar $2{\times}12$ chosen by cap shape (convex), diameter of pileus (60.7 mm), and quality (4.9) in a preliminary cultivation. The strain was named Gat_aeryni and was cultivated on a large scale for comparison with Kenneutari 2 ho at the GNARES and at mushroom farms. The yield of Gat_aeryni (71.7 g) was not significantly different from that of Kenneutari 2 ho (71.4 g), and the quality of the new cultivar was 6.8, which was not significantly different from that of a reference cultivar (6.5). Days for harvest, length, and diameter of the pileus in the two cultivars were statistically different by an independent t-test (P < 0.001, P < 0.05, P < 0.001 and P < 0.05 respectively). The new and reference cultivars were discriminated by PCR reactions with a primer set (URP1 and URP10) and simultaneous cultivation.

  • Forest green mold incidence rate, extent of damage according to the inoculation periods, and its cultural characteristics were observed in the automatic cultural system of the winter mushroom, Flammulina velutipes. The incidence rate of the forest green mold was 7.7% in early cultivation stage and slowly increased to 14.9% in harvest stage. When the forest green mold was inoculated at cultural period, the rate was recorded at 100%, but the extent of the damage increased up to 40% (+++). There was also 100% incidence rate at early pinheading time, whereas the yield of mushroom decreased to ++ $(10{\sim}39%)$. The rate of forest green mold was greatly decreased to 34.4% at 10 days after pinheading, and its damage extent was also below 10%. A pathogen to infect the winter mushroom was identified as Trichoderma pseudokoningii. It's optimum temperature for mycelial growth is $25^{\circ}C$, and it grew 2.6 times faster than that of F. velutipes. The mycelial color of T. pseudokoningii was pale yellow or olivaceous in shades on PDA medium. Phialospore was one celled, and ellipsodal or obovoid, smooth walled, and measured $1.3{\sim}3.0{\times}1.0{\sim}2.5\;{\mu}m$. It aggregated in small heads at the tips of the phialides. The phialides were $3.2{\sim}9.2{\times}2.0{\sim}5.5\;{\mu}m$ and were of bowling pin type, solitary and alternate or more irregularly disposed at the conidiophore apex, T. pseudokoningii depressed the F. velutipes growth at the crossing cultivation when they were simultaneously. FV 4-1 (F. velutipes) cultivar was less depressed by T. pseudokoningii, but had a lower cross growth rate than the other four cultivars.

  • Since the mid of 1980's, cultivation area and production of Ganoderma lucidum have been increased annually in Korea. However, the presence of a fungal disease has become a major limiting factor in the cultivation of Ganoderma lucidum, causing a serious economic loss. The present study was carried out to isolate and identify the pathogenic fungus to Ganoderma lucidum. Several fungi isolated from the wood logs showing typical symptoms were tested whether they are pathogenic to Ganoderma lucidum or not by cross-pairing culture method, flask inoculation method, and wood log inoculation method. The pathogenic fungus produced ascomata. Mature ascomata was spherical, dark, thick-walled, $45{\sim}95\;{\mu}m$ diameter. Asci were thin-walled, evanescent when mature, disintegrate early. Ascospores were spherical, hyaline, glaborous, thick-walled, refractive, $3.6{\sim}4.3\;{\mu}m$ in size. Conidiophores soon became abundantly septate and broke up into arthrospores, which are cylindrical, $3{\sim}6\;{\mu}m$ long and $3{\sim}4\;{\mu}m$ wide. Based on the observations under dissecting microscope, light microscope and scanning electron microscope, teleomorph and anamorph of the pathogenic fungus were identified as Xylogone sphaerospora Von Arx & Nilsson and Sporendonema purpurascens (Bonordon) Mason & Hughes, respectively. X. sphaerospora is first reported as a pathogenic fungus of Ganoderma lucidum.

  • This study aimed to develop the multi-span plastic greenhouse which is suitable for tomato cultivation and is safe against climatic disasters such as typhoon or heavy snow. The width and heights of eaves and ridge of newly developed tomato greenhouse are 7, 4.5 and 6.5 m, respectively. The width is the same but the eaves and ridge heights are 1.8 and 2 m higher than conventional 1-2 W greenhouses, respectively. Cross beam has been designed as a truss structure so it can sustain loads of tomato and equipment. Tomato greenhouse has been designed according to climatic disaster preventing design standard maintaining the high height. In other words, the material dimensions and interval of materials including column and rafter have been set to stand against $40m{\cdot}s^{-1}$ of wind and 40 cm of snow. Tomato greenhouse has been equipped with rack-pinion type roof vents which have been used in glass greenhouse in order to prevent excessive rise in air temperature. This vent type is different from that of 1-2 W type greenhouse which is made by rolling up and down the vinyl at upper part of column. Roof vents are installed at ridge, and thus external air inflow and natural ventilation are maximized. As the height increases, heating cost increase as well and, therefore, tomato greenhouse has been equipped with multi-layered thermal curtain, of which thermo-keeping is excellent, to prevent heat from escaping.

  • A new red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivar, "Mihong" which has late bolting and deep red leaf color was developed from a cross of "Danhongongchukmyeon" (deep red but early bolting and low yield) and "Hajicheongchukmyeon" (late bolting and high yield). The selection and breeding of advanced lines were done by pedigree method during 2000-2006. The advanced lines were evaluated for yield and adaptability in Korea (Gangwon, Kyunggi, Chungbuk, Kyungnam, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeju) from 2007 to 2008. The "Mihong" has gray seed color, traverse elliptic leaves and deep red color. Compared to "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon", marketable yield of "Mihong" was higher by 2% (at 291 g per plant) as a 17.3 ton/ha, but with particularly improved good expression of deep red leaf color in high temperature cultivation in the field. The shelf-life of "Mihong" was three weeks longer than "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" at $4^{\circ}C$. The amount of anthocyanin content of "Mihong" were higher than with "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" at 28.9 mg/100 g. Especially the degree of leaf hardness in "Mihong" showed $26.9kg/cm^2$ compared to "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon". therefore, its taste is better, more crispy, and sweeter than "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" This new cultivar "Mihong" can be cultivated in all year around even if summer time cultivation.

  • Saemimyeon, a Tongil type, medium-late maturing rice variety, is especially used for preparing rice noodles. Its high amylose content was developed to fit market demands and to be affordable for rice processing industries. One of the high yielding lines, Milyang181 (Hanareum), was used in the final three-way cross of $IR50^*2$/YR18241-B-B-115-1-1 for yield improvement and cultivation stabilization, including disease resistance. YR24235-10-1-3, a high yielding and compact plant type, was selected and named Milyang278 after yield test at NICS (RDA, Miryang) in 2010. It was subjected to regional yield test at six sites in the middle and southern plain areas of South Korea. Saemimyeon heading occurs on August 12 and is a mid-late maturing cultivar, with resistance to leaf blast, rice stripe virus, and bacterial blight (K1-K3a), but it is susceptible to major diseases and insect pest infestation. Saemimyeon showed a high amylose content of 26.7%, with a relatively low KOH digestion value of 3.5, which are key factors in rice noodles and pasta processing. In the local adaptability tests, the yield of Saemimyeon was 7.08 MT/ha-an increase of approximately 106% compared to that of Dasan. Thus, Saemimyeon is suitable for cultivation in the southern and middle plain areas of South Korea.

  • Cymbidium 'Orange Bowl' (Lucky Rainbow 'Randevous' ${\times}$ 'Eastern Star') was developed from a cross between hybrids at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 2006. A cross was made between the pink colored flower C. Lucky Rainbow 'Randevous' as maternal line and pure yellow colored flower, C. 'Eastern Star' as paternal line in 1995. The seed germination, cultivation, selection, and characteristic trials were conducted from 1996 to 2006. The line was named as Wongyo F1-18 and phenotype was characterized in 2006 as a new 'Orange Bowl'. The 'Orange Bowl' has having light yellow basal color (RHS, YO21D) and orange line (RHS, OR30B) on both of sepal and petal with red lip (RHS, OR30B). 'Orange Bowl' has about 10.9 flowers per flower stalk and flower size of 7.4 cm. General appearance of the petals and sepals is slightly incurved shape. The plant size is intermediate having erect peduncle. Blooming is started from the late of January (mid winter) under optimal culture condition. Leaf attitude and twisting is half- erect and very weak respectively. This hybrid has attractive floral arrangement, long flower stalk (71.8 cm) and vigorous growth. We expect that 'Orange bowl' has a great potential for exporting to Chinese market.

  • Campanula, native to Korea, is potentially an attractive potted or bedding plant. Experiments were conducted to produce a $F_1$ hybrid plant for a reduced plant height, 'Jiknyeo', by a conventional cross breeding between C. punctata Lam. and C. punctata Lam. var. rubriflora Mak. The crossing was carried out in July 2001 and the seeds were harvested in October 2001. Seeds were stored for two months at $5^{\circ}C$ for vernalization, and then were sown in March 2002. The $F_1$ hybrid have a purple flower color, and decreased plant height, leaf length, leaf width, and peduncle length. Each flower maintained freshness for a period of 20 days on the average. The whole flowering period of a plant was four months. The plant has flowering characteristics of an indeterminate inflorescence, prefers low humidity during the whole cultivation period, and requires low temperature in winter for flower bud differentiation.

  • Pear cultivar 'Sinhwa' (Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta Nakai) was originated from a cross between 'Niitaka' and Whasan' with the aims of improving the fruit quality and the traits of cultivation and of early maturing more than 'Whasan' cultivar at Pear Research Station of National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 1995. 'Sinhwa' was preliminarily selected in 2004 and named in 2009. The tree shows vigorous growth habit and semi-spread characters like 'Niitaka'. Furthermore, it has a sufficient and well upkeep of the flower bud, so it can be more easily cultivated in orchards. In the flower characteristics, flowering time of 'Sinhwa' is $11^{th}$ April like as maternal parent 'Niitaka'. Also 'Sinhwa' has short of pollen grains, so it is need above two pollinizer cultivars. 'Sinhwa' is highly resistant to black leaf spot (Alternaria kikuchiana) and relatively strong to pear scab (Venturia nashicola) in field condition. The optimum harvest time is around Sep. $15^{th}$ in Naju, which is ahead of 'Whasan' about 10 days in the harvest period. The fruit shape is oblate and fruit skin color is yellowish-brown during harvesting time. The average weight of fruit is 627 g, and the soluble solids content is $13.0^{\circ}Brix$. The flesh is very soft and juicy, and renders good eating quality. Shelf life is about 30 days under the room temperature condition.
