  • As demand of light weight in the automotive industry has increased, the cowl cross member has been investigated using various methods to change the material. Conventionally, a cowl cross member has been made of steel and aluminum, but recently researchers tested multi-material such as aluminum and plastic. We studied a new model of the cowl cross member made of composite and non ferrous materials. For products with a high degree of freedom in design, generally, the method of topology optimization is advantageous and for the partial bracket part of the cowl cross member had a degree of freedom in the design, a topology optimization is appropriate. Considering the characteristics of the cowl cross members, we need research to minimize the weight while having the performance of noise, vibration and harshness(NVH). Taking the mounting status of the product into consideration, we used an assembly model to optimize the cowl cross member. But this method took too much time so we considered simple cowl cross member assemble conditions using the direct matrix input method(DMI) with the Craig-Bampton Nodal Method. This method is capable of considering the status of the assembly without assembling the model, which reduced the solving time and increased the accuracy comparison with a cowl cross member without DMI.

  • A macroscopic cross section generation model was developed for the conceptual horizontal, compact high temperature gas reactor (HC-HTGR). Because there are many sources of spectral effects in the design and analysis of the core, conventional LWR methods have limitations for accurate simulation of the HC-HTGR using a neutron diffusion core neutronics simulator. Several super-cell model configurations were investigated to consider the spectral effect of neighboring cells. A new history variable was introduced for the existing library format to more accurately account for the history effect from neighboring nodes and reactivity control drums. The macroscopic cross section library was validated through comparison with cross sections generated using full core Monte Carlo models and single cell cross section for both 3D core steady-state problems and 2D and 3D depletion problems. Core calculations were then performed with the AGREE HTR neutronics and thermal-fluid core simulator using super-cell cross sections. With the new history variable, the super-cell cross sections were in good agreement with the full core cross sections even for problems with significant spectrum change during fuel shuffling and depletion.

  • This paper presents a method for evaluating interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) performance over the entire operation region. Using a d-q axis equivalent circuit model consisting of motor parameters such as the permanent magnetic flux, copper resistance, core loss resistance, and d-q axis inductance, a conventional mathematical model of an IPMSM has been developed. It is well understood that in IPMSMs, magnetic operating conditions cause cross saturation and that the iron loss resistance - upon which core losses depend - changes according to the motor speed; for the sake of convenience, however, d-q axis machine models usually neglect the influence of magnetic cross saturation and assume that the iron loss resistance is constant. This paper proposes an analysis method based on considering a magnetic cross saturation and estimating a core loss resistance that changes with the operating conditions and speed. The proposed method is then verified by means of a comparison between the computed and the experimental results.

  • Two 110-GHz oscillators have been developed in 65-nm CMOS technology. To study the effect of layout on the circuit performance, both oscillators had the same LC cross-coupled topology but different layout schemes of the circuit. The oscillator with the conventional cross-coupled design (OSC1), showed an output power of -3.9 dBm at 111 GHz with a phase noise of -75 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset. On the other hand, OSC2, with a modified cross-coupled line layout, generated an output power of -2.0 dBm at 117 GHz with a phase noise of -77 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset. The result indicates that the optimized layout can improve key oscillator performances such as oscillation frequency and output power.

  • The expediency of using tubular composite steel and concrete columns of annular cross-sections in construction is discussed. The new type space framework with tubular composite columns of multi-storey buildings and its rigid beam-column joints are demonstrated. The features of interaction between the circular steel tube and spun concrete stress-strain states during the concentrical and eccentrical loading of tubular composite members are considered. The modeling of the bearing capacity of beam-columns of composite annular cross-sections is based on the concepts of bending with a concentrical force and compression with a bending moment. The comparison of modeling results for the composite cross-sections of beam-columns is analysed. The expediency of using these concepts for the limit state verification of beam-columns in the methods of the partial safety factors design (PSFD) legitimated in Europe and the load and resistance factors design (LRFD) used in other countries is presented and illustrated by a numerical example.

  • A two-dimensional cross-section analysis program based on the finite element method has been developed for composite blades with arbitrary cross-section profiles and material distributions. The modulus weighted approach is used to take into account the non-homogeneous material characteristics of advanced blades. The CLPT (Classical Lamination Plate Theory) is applied to obtain the effective moduli of the composite laminate. The location of shear center for any given cross-sections are determined according to the Trefftz' definition while the torsion constants are obtained using the St. Venant torsion theory. A series of benchmark examples for beams with various cross-sections are illustrated to show the accuracy of the developed cross-section analysis program. The cross section cases include thin-walled C-channel, I-beam, single-cell box, NACA0012 airfoil, and KARI small-scale blades. Overall, a reasonable correlation is obtained in comparison with experiments or finite element analysis results.

  • Heat generation rate in a telecommunication cabinet increases due to the continued usage of mobile devices. Insufficient removal of heat intensifies the cabinet temperature, resulting in the malfunction of electronic devices. In this study, we assessed both aluminum and plastic heat exchangers used for cooling of the telecommunication cabinet, and compared the results against theoretical predictions. The aluminum heat exchanger was composed of counter flow parallel channels of 4.5 mm pitch, and the plastic heat exchangers were composed of cross flow triangular channels of 2.0 mm pitch. Samples were made by installing two plastic heat exchangers in both series and parallel. Results showed that the heat transfer rate was highest for the series cross flow heat exchanger, and was least for the aluminum heat exchanger. The temperature efficiency of the series cross flow heat exchanger was 59% greater than that of the aluminum heat exchanger, and was 4.3% greater than that of the parallel cross flow heat exchanger. In contrast, the pressure drop of the parallel cross flow heat exchanger was significantly lower than other samples. The heat exchange efficiency was also the largest for the parallel cross flow heat exchanger. The theoretical analysis predicted the temperature efficiency to be within 3.3%, and the pressure drop within 6.1%.

  • A recent benchmarking effort, under the auspices of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), has been made to evaluate the current state of modeling and simulation tools available to model fluoride salt-cooled high temperature reactors (FHRs). The FHR benchmarking effort considered in this work consists of several cases evaluating the neutronic parameters of a 2D prismatic FHR fuel assembly model using the participants' choice of simulation tools. Benchmark participants blindly submitted results for comparison with overall good agreement, except for some which significantly differed on cases utilizing a molybdenum-bearing control rod. Participants utilizing more recently updated explicit isotopic cross sections had consistent results, whereas those using elemental molybdenum cross sections observed reactivity differences on the order of thousands of pcm relative to their peers. Through a series of supporting tests, the authors attribute the differences as being nuclear data driven from using older legacy elemental molybdenum cross sections. Quantitative analysis is conducted on the control rod to identify spectral, reaction rate, and cross section phenomena responsible for the observed differences. Results confirm the observed differences are attributable to the use of elemental cross sections which overestimate the reaction rates in strong resonance channels.

  • The main reason for the increase in cross-border mergers and acquisitions in developed and emerging countries is globalization and growing economic interdependence across countries. The state of the economy has a significant impact on whether cross-border mergers and acquisitions are encouraged or discouraged by international strategic capital market changes. This study empirically evaluates the influence of determinants of economic development on the scale effect of Cross Border M&As separately on emerging and developed nations as a research gap. We first separated the small and large scale firms based on companies' worth and used panel regression to analyze the impact of GDP, employment rate, and market capitalization on cross-border merger & acquisition deals over the period of 2008-2018. Results indicate that GDP and market capitalization have a positive effect on CBM&A, whereas employment rate has a negative effect on CBM&A deals in large-scale firms of both emerging and developed countries. This study results offer the implication for the potential investors and policymakers to strategically analyze the implementation of cross-border mergers & acquisitions.
