  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative angles and cross-correlation between body segments and ski among four alpine ski turning techniques. Method: 19 alpine ski instructors participated in this study. Each skier asked to perform 4- types of turning technique, classified by radius and level. 8 inertial measurement units were used to measure orientation angle of segment and ski on the anteroposterior and vertical axis. Results: Significant differences were found between types of turning in the segments-ski relative angle on the anteroposterior and vertical axis (p<.05). Although, cross-correlation showed a high correlation between angles of segment and ski, there were significant differences between types of turning. Conclusion: Based on our results, the relative movement and timing between each segment and ski is different according to the turning techniques, so the training methods should be applied differently.

  • In order to achieve fast computational speed with good visual quality of output video, we propose a frequency domain based new fractal video compression scheme. Normalized cross correlation is used to find the structural self similar domain block for the input range block. To increase the searching speed, cross correlation is implemented in the frequency domain using FFT with one computational operation for all the domain blocks instead of individual block wise calculations. The encoding time is further minimized by applying rotation and reflection DFT properties to the IFFT of zero padded range blocks. The energy of overlap small size domain blocks is pre-computed for the entire reference frame and retaining the energies of the overlapped search window portion of previous adjacent block. Quadtree decompositions are obtained by using domain block motion compensated prediction error as a threshold to control the further partitions of the block. It provides a better level of adaption to the scene contents than fixed block size approach. The result shows that, on average, the proposed method can raise the encoding speed by 48.8 % and 90 % higher than NHEXS and CPM/NCIM algorithms respectively. The compression ratio and PSNR of the proposed method is increased by 15.41 and 0.89 dB higher than that of NHEXS on average. For low bit rate videos, the proposed algorithm achieve the high compression ratio above 120 with more than 31 dB PSNR.

  • This paper presents a fingerprint recognition algorithm using cross-correlation function. This algorithm consists of minutiae extraction, minutiae alignment and minutiae matching, where we propose a new minutiae alignment method. In our alignment method, the rotation angle between two fingerprints is obtained by using cross-correlation function of the minutia directions, thereafter the displacement is obtained from the rotated fingerprint. This alignment method is capable of finding rotation angle and displacement of two fingerprints without resorting to exhaustive search. Our fingerprint recognition algorithm has been tested on fingerprint images captured with inkless scanner. The experiment results show that 17.299% false rejection ratio(FRR) at 2.086% false acceptance ratio(FAR).

  • The proposed method uses Generalized Cross Correlation - Phase Transform (GCC-PHAT) method with nonlinear preprocessing and a frequency domain low-pass filter. In this paper, by reinterpreting the calculation process of GCC-PHAT as DFT, we derive that there is an effective frequency band used for time delay estimation in GCC-PHAT, and by using only the effective band using a low-pass filter, the noise component is reduced and it improvesthe time delay performance in impulsive noise environments. By comparing the proposed method with the traditional GCC-PHAT in an impulsive noise environment, we show that the GCC-PHAT becomes more robust to the impulsive noise.

  • A number of different techniques are available to mitigate the problem of cross correlations caused by the limited dynamic range of the 10-bit Gold codes in the GPS C/A code. These techniques include successive-interference cancellation (SIC) and parallel-interference cancellation (PIC), where the strong signals are subtracted at IF prior to attempting to detect the weak signals. In this paper, a variation of these techniques is proposed whereby the subtraction process is delayed until after the correlation process, although still employing a pure reconstructed C/A code signal to permit prediction of the cross correlation process. The paper provides details on the method as well as showing the results obtained when the method was implemented using a software GPS receiver. The benefits of this approach are also described, as is the application of the method to the cancellation of CW interference.

  • Identification of the whipping response out of the combined wave-vibration response of a flexible sea going vessel is one of the most interesting research topic from ship designer's point of view. In order to achieve this goal, a novel methodology based on the wavelet cross-correlation technique was proposed in this paper. The cross-correlation of the wavelet power spectrum averaged across the frequency axis was introduced to check the similarity between the combined wave-vibration response and impulse response. The calculated cross-correlation of the wavelet power spectrum was normalized by the auto-correlation of the each spectrum with zero time lag, eventually providing the cross-correlation coefficient that stays between 0 and 1, precisely indicating the existence of the impulse response buried in the combined wave-vibration response. Additionally, the weight function was introduced while calculating the cross-correlation of the two spectrums in order to filter out the signal of lower frequency so that the accuracy of the similarity check becomes as high as possible. The validity of the proposed methodology was checked through the application to the artificially generated ideal combined wave-vibration signal, together with the more realistic signal obtained by running 3D hydroelasticity program WISH-Flex. The correspondence of the identified whipping instances between the results, one from the proposed method and the other from the calculated slamming modal force, was excellent.

  • Leak noise is a good source to identify the exact location of a leak point of underground water pipelines. Water leak generates broadband noise from a leak location and can be propagated to both directions of water pipes. This sound propagation due to leak in water pipelines is not a non-dispersive wave any more because of the surrounding pipes and soil. However, the necessity of long-range detection of this leak location makes to identify low-frequency acoustic waves rather than high frequency ones. Acoustic wave propagation coupled with surrounding boundaries including cast iron pipes is theoretically analyzed and the wave velocity was confirmed with experiment. The leak locations were identified both by the acoustic emission (AE) method and the cross-correlation method. In a short-range distance, both the AE method and cross-correlation method are effective to detect leak position. However, the detection for a long-range distance required a lower frequency range accelerometers only because higher frequency waves were attenuated very quickly with the increase of propagation paths. Two algorithms for the cross-correlation function were suggested, and a long-range detection has been achieved at real underground water pipelines longer than 300m.

  • This paper presents an improved anti-islanding algorithm for utility interconnection of multiple distributed fuel cell powered generations (DFPGs). A cross-correlation method is proposed and implemented in conjunction with the anti-islanding algorithm developed in the previous work [I]. While the power control algorithm continuously perturbs $({\pm}5%)$ the reactive power supplied by the DFPG, the proposed algorithm calculates the cross-correlation index of a rate of change of the frequency deviation with respect to $({\pm}5%)$ the reactive power to confirm islanding. If this index is above 50%, the algorithm further initiates $({\pm}10%)$ the reactive power perturbation and continues to calculate the correlation index. If the index exceeds 80%, the occurrence of islanding can be confirmed. The proposed method is robust and capable of detecting the occurrence of islanding in the presence of several DFPGs, which are independently operating. Viability of the cross-correlation method is verified by the simulation. Experimental results are presented to support the findings of the proposed method.
