  • The Signal -to- Noise Ratio of delta modulation for a fi rEt -order Gauss -Markov signal is derived and an approximate expreession of SND is discussed, in the case that only granular noise arises. Cross covariance of input and error signals are negligible when the adjacent correlation of input signal is larger than the difference between the adjacent correlation and the prediction coefficient of local decoder. The approximately derived SNR is available for any value of adjacent correlation.

  • Water leak is one of topics with great concern in Korea and many other countries, because of decreasing water supplies and the deterioration of old pipeworks. Correlation techniques have been widely used in leak detection of water pipes, which allow to locate a leak point based on the correlation of leak noise at two sites along water pipes. In this study, both the cross-correlation method and the conventional arrival time difference method are applied in order to analyze and to locate a leak point of a water pipe. In experiment, a 150 m of whole length waterwork pipeline system was constructed in a ground, and several types of leak noise were installed on the pipeline in order to control leak condition. Both the cross-correlation technique and the arrival time difference method showed favorable results at leak detection with the experimental pipeline system.

  • Models estimating carbon budget at land surface are mainly interested in vertical flux of carbon. On the other hand, studies on horizontal flux are obviously lacked to confirm that relationship between the hydrological flux of organic carbon discharged from catchment and terrestrial carbon production, a relation between Total Organic Carbon(TOC) and Gross Primary Production(GPP) tried analysis through cross correlation. The best correlation structure is correlation between GPP and TOC of flow-weighted mean concentration from watershed without delay. Furthermore, cross correlation analysis was performed by consider periodicity. The correlation between TOC and GPP in summer was similar to correlation without periodicity. Therefore, correlation between GPP and TOC was most regulated by the correlation between GPP and TOC at summer. As a result, the vegetation carbon and organic carbon from watershed is recognized a close relationship on the seasonal. Therefore, future research is correlation analyzing between vegetation variables according season, GPP and TOC, we are expected to use quantitative understanding that horizontal flux flow of carbon from the surface.

  • In this paper, we propose a probabilistic model appropriate for the bearing estimator which uses cross-correlation method following a close investigation on real underwater acoustic bearing data. The well-known JPDA(Joint Probabilistic Data Association) filter is tuned to the underwater acoustic bearing estimation based on the result that the reliability of the bearing measurement is related to the amplitude of the cross-correlation peak. The proposed probabilistic model is shown to be adequate by presenting the results of the improved tracking performance of the modified filter for various real bearing data as well as artificially generated ones.

  • This paper presents a method of fault detection and fault localization from acoustic noise measurements. In order to detect the presence of noise sources wavelet transform is applied to acoustic signal. In addition, a cross correlation based method is proposed to calculate the exact location of the noise allowing the user to quickly diagnose and resolve the source of the noise. The fault detection system is implemented using two microphones and a computer system. Experimental results show that the system can detect faults due to artifacts accidentally inserted during the manufacturing process and estimate the location of the fault with approximately 1 cm precision.

  • The conventional fault location algorithms based on the travelling waves have an inherent problem. In cases of the close-up faults occurring near the relaying point and of the faults having zero degree inception angle of voltage signals, the conventional algorithms can not estimate an accurate fault distance. It is because the shapes of travelling waves are near sinusoidal in those cases. A new method solving this problem is presented in this paper. An FIR(Finite Impulse response) filter which makes high frequency components prominent and makes the power frequency component and dc-offset attenuated is used. With this method, the cross-correlation peak is to be very clear when a close-up fault or a fault having near zero-degree inception angle occurs. The cross-correlation peaks can be clearly distinguished and accurate fault location is practically possible consequently. A series of simulation studies using EMTP(Electromagnetic Transients Program) show that the proposed algorithm can calculate an accurate fault distance having maximum 2% or less error.

  • An algorithm of 3-D particle image velocimetry(3D-PIV) was developed for the measurement of 3-D velocity field of complex flows. The measurement system consists of two or three CCD camera and one RGB image grabber. In this study, stereo photogrammetty was applied for the 3-D matching of tracer particles. Epipolar line was used to decect the stereo pair. 3-D CFD data was used to estimate algorithm. 3-D position data of the first frame and the second frame was used to find velocity vector. Continuity equation was applied to extract error vector. The algorithm result involved error vecotor of about 0.13 %. In Pentium III 450MHz processor, the calculation time of cross-correlation for 1500 particles needed about 1 minute.

  • The frequency responses on the sub-pixel evaluation technique were investigated using the Monte-calro Simulation technique. The frequency response by the FFT based cross-correlation gives very good results, however, the gain loss does exist for the small displacement, (less than 0.5 pixel). While, the no gain loss is observed in the Direct Cross-correlation, however, the sub-pixel accuracy was limited to be about 0.1 pixel, i.e., it could not detect the small displacement. To detect the higher accurate sub-pixel displacement, the gradient based technique is the best. For the small interrogation area (e.g., 4x4), only the gradient technique can detect the small displacement correctly.
