  • The development of models for agriculture systems, especially for crop production, has supported the prediction of crop yields under various environmental change scenarios and the selection of better crop species or cultivar. Crop models could be used as tools for supporting reasonable nutrient management approaches for agricultural land. This paper outlines the simplified structure of main crop models (crop growth model, crop-soil model, and crop-soil-environment model) frequently used in agricultural systems and shows diverse application of their simulated results. Crop growth models such as LINTUL, SUCROS, could provide simulated data for daily growth, potential production, and photosynthesis assimilate partitioning to various organs with different physiological stages, and for evaluating crop nutrient demand. Crop-Soil models (DSSAT, APSIM, WOFOST, QUEFTS) simulate growth, development, and yields of crops; soil processes describing nutrient uptake from root zone; and soil nutrient supply capability, e.g., mineralization/decomposition of soil organic matter. The crop model built for the DSSAT family software has limitations in spatial variability due to its simulation mechanism based on a single homogeneous field unit. To introduce well-performing crop models, the potential applications for crop-soil-environment models such as DSSAT, APSIM, or even a newly designed model, should first be compared. The parameterization of various crops under different cultivation conditions like those of intensive farming systems common in Korea, shortened crop growth period, should be considered as well as various resource inputs.

  • The trapping efficacy of five commercially available sex pheromones manufactured in Korea, the Netherlands, North America, China, and Costa Rica was evaluated to determine the population dynamics of Spodoptera frugiperda and Mythimna loreyi and their relationships with the weather parameters of maize fields in Miryang, Gyeongnam Province, Korea in 2019. The results show that the sex pheromone manufactured in Costa Rica were more efficient at capturing S. frugiperda and M. loreyi than those manufactured in other countries. The lowest number of S. frugiperda moths were captured using sex pheromones manufactured in the Netherlands. We noted that more than four population peaks of both the moth species and weather parameters influenced the moth population dynamics in Miryang. A positive relationship was observed between the population of S. frugiperda and weather parameters, such as mean temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity, for sex pheromones manufactured in Korea. Furthermore, a positive relationship was recorded between the population of M. loreyi and wind speed for the sex pheromone manufactured in Korea. The results of this study suggest that the sex pheromones manufactured in Costa Rica are the best solution for the efficient capture of S. frugiperda and M. loreyi under typical weather conditions in the southern parts of Korea. In addition, the outcomes of this study are discussed in terms of population dynamics and integrated pest management for S. frugiperda and M. loreyi as alternatives to chemical management by maize producers. Further studies related to the continuous improvement in the capture efficiency of both moth species using sex pheromones are now needed.

  • Bacillus spp., as a type of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), were studied with regards promoting plant growth and inducing plant systemic resistance. The results of greenhouse experiments with tobacco plants demonstrated that treatment with the Bacillus spp. significantly enhanced the plant height and fresh weight, while clearly lowering the disease severity rating of the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) at 28 days post-inoculation (dpi). The TMV accumulation in the young non-inoculated leaves was remarkably lower for all the plants treated with the Bacillus spp. An RT-PCR analysis of the signaling regulatory genes Coil and NPR1, and defense genes PR-1a and PR-1b, in the tobacco treated with the Bacillus spp. revealed an association with enhancing the systemic resistance of tobacco to TMV. A further analysis of two expansin genes that regulate plant cell growth, NtEXP2 and NtEXP6, also verified a concomitant growth promotion in the roots and leaves of the tobacco responding to the Bacillus spp.

  • Crop production in rice paddy fields is of great importance because of declining rice consumption and the low self-sufficiency ratio for field crops in Korea. A controlled drainage system (CDS) is recognized as an effective means to adjust water table (WT) levels as needed and control soil water content to improve the soil environment for optimum crop growth. The present study evaluated the effects of a CDS on soil characteristics, including soil water distribution and soybean development in paddy fields. The CDS was installed with two drain spacing (3 m and 6 m) at the experimental paddy field at the National Institute of Crop Science, Miryang, Korea. It was managed with two WT levels (0.3 m and 0.6 m) during the growing season. Soil water content, electrical conductivity and plant available nitrogen content in the soil were significantly greater in the 0.3 m WT management plots than in the 0.6 m plot and the control. At the vegetative stage, chlorophyll content was significantly lower with higher WT control because of excess soil moisture, but it recovered after the flowering stage. Soybean yield increased with WT management and the 0.6 m WT treatment produced the greatest grain yield, $3.38ton\;ha^{-1}$, which was 50% greater than that of the control. The CDS directly influenced outflow through the drains, which significantly delayed nutrient loss. The results of this study indicated that WT management by CDS can influence soil characteristics and it is an important practice for high yielding soybean production in paddy fields, which should be considered the crop growth stages for stable crop production.

  • Cultural practices for adzuki bean and the distribution of weed species in the south-west regions of Korea were surveyed to provide information on effective weed management. Approximately 27.5% of the farm households were growing adzuki bean in an area larger than 1 ha while the rest grew the crop in an area smaller than 1 ha. Of all adzuki bean growers, 17.1% seeded in early June, 8.6% in mid June, 34.3% in late June, 17.1% in early July, 20.0% in mid July, and 2.9% in late July. The average planting distance was $71.0{\times}29.5cm$. From the 40 surveys in adzuki bean fields, 35 weed species in 17 families were identified. According to the occurrence frequency, the dominant weed species were Digitaria sanguinalis, Acalypha australis, Cyperus amuricus, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Amaranthus nangostanus in decreasing order of dominance. However, based on dry weight, Chenopodium album (34.4%) was the most dominant followed by Acalypha australis (21.9%), Amaranthus nangostanus (19.1%), Digitaria sanguinalis (7.5%), and Portulaca oleracea (6.1%). The exotic weeds found in the field of adzuki were Ipomoea hederacea, Abutilon avicennae, and Celosia argentea. The plant heights of I. hederacea, A. avicennae, and C. argentea were 259 cm, 98 cm, and 76 cm, respectively, while the fresh weights were 850 g, 66 g, and 101 g, respectively. Integrated weed management systems utilizing mechanical, chemical, and biological control techniques need to be developed for effective weed management in adzuki bean production.

  • Recently, soybean production and market price are unstable, even if demand of soybean is maintained. Diverse conditions such as climate change, a decrease in rural population, and consuming affect food industry. In this situation, food security is soaring as important key-word again, and MAFRA is promoting policies for improving soybean self-sufficiency with the goal of 40% until 2030. The point of policy is to extend a production and stabilize a demand for soybean with supporting large-scale soybean paddy-field complex. According to the background, soybean breeding and production research in NICS are proceeded with three parts. First, production improvement with soybean cultivation land enlargement and high-yield cultivar development. Various growth period soybean cultivars for double cropping, irrigation management technologies in paddy field, and hyper-yield and specific-region adaptable cultivar development. Second, reduction of production expense with mechanized cultivation and digital-based field management technologies. Third, consumer-friendly and high quality soybeans with high protein cultivar for alternative protein usage and high food process-ability for soy milk, tofu, soybean sprouts, and grain usage. Each part need to be combined and advanced to improve soybean industry and soybean self-sufficiency.

  • It is necessary to assess soil physical properties and crop growth treated by compaction to establish the soil management standard. This study evaluated the bulk density, strength and crop growth after subsoil compaction for sandy loam and loam on the field in Suwon, Korea. The treatments were compaction and deep tillage. Sandy loam and loam were classified to coarse soil and fine soil, respectively, depending on clay contents. In coarse soil, bulk density of compacted plot was 8~17% greater than control and deep tilled plot. The root growth was worse in compacted plot compared with control. In fine soil, plow pan was not observed in deep tilled plot with 5~19% smaller bulk density than compacted plot and control. Deep tillage improved the crop growth. The soil physical properties by compaction were dependent on clay content and crop growth limit depended on the traffic driving.

  • During the rainy season in Thailand, specimens of Phallus chiangmaiensis sp. nov. and P. merulinus were collected from Chiang Mai and Samut Sakhon Provinces, respectively. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (LSU), nuclear ribosomal 5.8S gene including the internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2 (ITS), and the protein-coding gene atp6 (mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate [ATP] synthase subunit 6) support the placement of the new species within Phallus. Phallus chiangmaiensis has a well-developed white indusium and campanulated caps with reticulate surfaces. It differs morphologically from the related species, as supported by the phylogenetic data. Phallus merulinus is reported here as a species that was re-encountered in Thailand. The descriptions of the species are accompanied by illustrations of macro- and micro- morphological features, and a discussion of the related taxa is presented.
