Persistence and degradation patterns of acequinocyl and its metabolite, hydroxyl-acequinocyl (acequinocyl-OH) and fenpyroximate in butterburs (Petasites japonicus Max.) were investigated after pesticide application. Butterburs, one of the minor crops in South Korea, was planted in two plots (plot A for double and plot B for single application) in a greenhouse. Butterburs samples were also planted in a separate plot without pesticide treatment, as the control. A commercial pesticide containing acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was applied to the foliage of butterburs at hourly intervals after dilution. Recoveries of acequinocyl and acequinocyl-OH were 78.6-84.7% and 83.7-95.5%, respectively; the relative standard deviation of the two compounds were less than 5%. The method limit of quantification was 0.01 mg/kg. The total (Ʃ) acequinocyl residues in butterburs reduced by 96.0% at 14 days and 75.9% at 7 days, in plot A and B, respectively, after final pesticide applications. The biological half-life (DT50) of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate, calculated using the dissipation rate, was 3.0 days and 4.0 days, respectively. These data were used to set up maximum residue and safe standard levels when the pesticides are applied to control pests during butterbur cultivation. Risk assessment results showed that the maximum % acceptable daily intake was 7.74% for Ʃ acequinocyl and 0.16% for Ʃ fenpyroximate. The theoretical maximum daily intake of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was 26.3% and 35.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the concentrations of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate in butterburs pose no significant health risks to Koreans.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is increasingly important as a biomass crop worldwide. Its genetic diversity provides a large range of biochemical composition suitable for various uses as bioplastics. Phenolic compounds are the main compounds of lignocellulosic residues, which can be used as a source of active components for their use in active packaging materials. In this research, we investigated the total phenolic content (TPC) and the total flavonoid content (TFC) among 60 mutant lines (early heading, high biomass and dwarfness) and their original cultivars. Sixty sorghum mutant lines were developed by treatment with gamma-ray or proton irradiation in 14 sorghum cultivars. The levels of TPC and TFC of 14 original cultivars were ranging from 3.27 to 11.54 mg/100 g and 2.39 to 6.74 mg/100 g, respectively. The TPCs of the mutant lines were ranging from 1.92 to 13.10 mg/100 g with average content of 6.35 mg/100 g. The TFCs of the mutant lines were ranging from 1.72 to 8.30 mg/100 g with average content of 4.20 mg/100 g. Three mutant lines derived from gamma-ray showed significant lower TPC and TFC than those of the original cultivar. While, five mutant lines showed significant higher TPC and TFC. These findings will be useful for the selection of sorghum genotypes with improved phenolic compounds.

Quintozene, pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) is a contact fungicide for control of soilborne phytopathogenic fungi during cultivation of diverse crops. It was introduced to agricultural use around 1930's as a substitute for mercurial disinfectants. Although quintozene had been first registered in Korea on 1969. However, now it was banned to use due to its high residue levels in selected harvest products. Also, high possibility is expected that the residue may be contained in imported agricultural commodities as it is still used widely over the world. Therefore, this study was conducted to establish a determination method for quintozene residue in crops using GC/ECD/MS. Quintozene residue was extracted with acetonitrile from representative samples of five raw products which comprised hulled rice, soybean, Kimchi cabbage, green pepper, and apple. The extract was diluted with saline water, and n-hexane partition was followed to recover quintozene from the aqueous phase. Florisil column chromatography was additionally employed for final clean up of the extract. The quintozene was quantitated by GLC with ECD, using a DB-1 capillary column. The crops were fortified with quintozene at 3 levels per crop. Mean recoveries ranged from 79.9% to 102.7% in five representative agricultural commodities. The coefficients of variation were less than 4.3%. Quantitative limit of quintozene was 0.004 mg/kg in representative five crop samples. A GC/MS with selected-ion monitoring was also provided to confirm the suspected residue. Therefore, this analytical method was reproducible and sensitive enough to determine the residue of quintozene in agricultural commodities.

BACKGROUND: Supervised residue trials were conducted to establish pre-harvest residue limit(PHRL), a criterion to ensure the safety of the pesticide residue in the crop harvest, of amisulbrom for winter-grown cabbage in two fields. Following to application of amisulbrom on the crop, time-course study was carried out to obtain the amisulbrom dissipation of statistical significance which enabled to calculate the predicted values of PHRL. METHOD AND RESULTS: During cultivation under greenhouse condition, samples of winter-grown cabbage were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days after amisulbrom application, and subjected to residue analysis. Analytical method was validated by recoveries ranging 93.7~100.0% as well as limit of quantitation(LOQ) of 0.04 mg/kg. Amisulbrom residues in winter-grown cabbage gradually decreased as time elapsed. The dissipation rate of the residue would be affected by intrinsic degradation along with dilution by the cabbage growth. The decay pattern was well fitted by the simple first-order kinetics. CONCLUSION: Biological half-lives of amisulbrom in winter-grown cabbage ranged 3.7~4.1 days in two field conditions. Based on the regression of amisulbrom dissipation, PHRLs of amisulbrom in winter-grown cabbage were recommended as 8.86~9.47 and 4.21~4.35 mg/kg for 10 and 5 days before harvest, respectively.
In the present study, optimization on ${\beta}$-glucanase-assisted extraction was made in order to isolate waxy barley starch from domestic cultivar using the D-optimal design suitable for response surface methodology (RSM). The results demonstrated that the amount of enzyme was found to be a major influencing factor on the extraction yield, which was substantially increased by increasing the amount of enzyme. It was also influenced by the reaction time and amount of water addition; however, the two factors were less influential than the amount of enzyme. The optimized condition by RSM for the reaction time was found to be 2.63 hours and amount of enzyme 1.7%, and amount of water addition 4.38 times the weight of raw material. With the enzyme treatment, the starch content in residues (R), particularly in R1 and R5, was reduced considerably, resulting in an increase in the extraction yield and therefore primarily and effectively releasing B-type starch small granule confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy. In addition, the study determined the physicochemical properties of isolated waxy starch (i.e., purity, water adsorption capacity, thermal properties, rheology and starch morphology) and compared them with those from the enzyme-not treated sample. It was found that they were almost similar to each other, except for the purity of starch, which was lower in the enzyme-treated sample than in the enzyme-not treated one.
BACKGROUND:This study was conducted to investigate residual organochlorine pesticides (ROCPs) in agricultural soils and crops. Agricultural soil samples and crop samples were collected from 93 cities and counties. METHODS AND RESULTS: Extraction and clean-up for the quantitative analysis of ROCPs were conducted by the modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method. Recovery and limit of detection (LOD) of ROCPs in agriculturalsoils and crops were 76.5-103.0 and 75.2-93.2%, 0.01-0.08 and $0.10-0.15{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. Detected ROCPs in agricultural soils were ${\alpha}$-endosulfan, ${\beta}$-endosulfan, and endosulfan sulfate, the residue were 2.0-12.0, 1.2-53.1, and $2.2-329.8{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. But these pesticides in all green perilla leaf and green pepper samples were not detected. CONCLUSION: These results showed that ROCPs residues in agricultural soils were not as high as crop safety threatening.
We used green manure crops such as hairy vetch, crimson clover, rye, sorghum, and sudan grass by mixing with soils to assess the effects of green manure crops on nutrient supply and soil quality improvement. Temporal changes in soil inorganic nitrogen, carbohydrate, microbial biomass, and humus content were determined as soil quality indicators. Inorganic nitrogen content of the control maintained similar level during the whole period, but it had continually increased until 4 weeks after incorporation (WAI) of green manure crops. Especially, inorganic nitrogen content sharply increased in sudan grass. After incorporation of green manure crops, temporal change of soluble sugar in soils was as follows: it had gradually increased in legume green manure crops-incorporated soils until 7 WAI, which was the highest, and then showed the tendency to be reduced. Meanwhile, it in non-legume green manure crops-incorporated soils rapidly increased after the incorporation, and reached the maximum around 4 WAI. Humic acid by the decomposition of crop residues in green manure crops-incorporated soils was greatly enhanced with the elapsed time of 4 WAI, although it was low at the same level as the control until 2 weeks. In addition, there was a difference in fulvic acid by incorporated crops, fulvic acid in hairy vetch, sorghum and sudan grass showed a similar tendency with the change in humic acid. Our results suggest that soluble sugar, microbial activity and humic acid could be available indicators to evaluate the fertility of green manure crops-incorporated soils.
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is the world's leading quality certification for food safety. Since its introduction in Korea in 2006, its importance has been increasing every year. In particular, food safety issues are becoming increasingly important in society, and food safety is directly linked to health. The core of GAP certification is the traceability of the production, distribution, and consumption of hazardous materials, including pesticide residues, heavy metals, and microbes. In the present study, pesticides and heavy metals in button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) and associated cultivation materials were analyzed. Tricyclozole (0.0144 ppm), flubendiamide (0.147 ppm), and trifloxystrobin (0.0340 ppm) were detected in rice straw and wheat straw, and carbendazim (0.0142 ppm) was detected in mixed wheat straw and rice straw medium. Lead and cadmium were detected at levels higher than the standard level in rice straw and mixed medium. However, lead and cadmium were not detected in mushrooms, and levels of arsenic and mercury were below the safety limit. Therefore, it was confirmed that the residual pesticides and heavy metals are safely managed in the investigated mushroom species. The results of the present study suggest that if these materials are adequately managed in the surroundings during cultivation, all hazardous materials can be managed during mushroom production.
Ethephon is useful pesticide as ethylene precursor, which is an efficient plant hormone to produce functional secondary metabolites. However, the residual safety of ethephon was not studied on various crops. In here, the dissipation pattern of ethephon residue in soybean leaf was investigated both on the foliar and drenching applications. The biological half-lives of ethephon residues were 26.6, and 21.1 h on the once, and double foliar applications, respectively. Although the residue after three days from the final application was up to $60.6mg\;kg^{-1}$, the residue was below the limit of quantitation on the dried soybean leaf. In addition, drenching application of ethephon could increase the residue up to $36.3mg\;kg^{-1}$ after 20.1 h from the application, however, the treatment would not affect to the total phenol content significantly (p >0.01).
Rape residue as green manure is an emerging alternative of chemical fertilizer to improve soil quality and crop productivity. Objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of rape residue as green manure on reduction of chemical fertilizer and suppression of weed occurrence in rice-rape double cropping system. Greenhouse experiment was conducted with four treatments: the combination of rape residue and three different N application rates (0, 30 and 70% of recommended application rate (7.8 kg N $10a^{-1}$)) and 100% chemical fertilizer as a control. No difference in rice clum length was observed for all treatments, while panicle length was highest in a treatment of rape residue+70% chemical fertilizer (Rape+70%CF). In addition, rice grain weight at a Rape+70%CF treatment increased by 19% compared to the control. This treatment also reduced weed density and biomass by 58 and 53%, respectively, compared to the control. Our results suggest that use of rape residues as green manure is an environment friendly and effective way to reduce chemical fertilizer and to enhance crop productivity in rice-rape double cropping system in Korea.
