Tapered girders emerged as an economical remedy for the challenges associated with constructing long-span buildings. From an economic standpoint, these systems offer significant advantages, such as wide spans, quick assembly, and convenient access to utilities between the beam's shallow sections and the ceiling below. Elastic-local buckling is among the various failure modes that structural designers must account for during the design process. Despite decades of study, there remains a demand for efficient and comprehensive procedures to streamline product design. One of the most pressing requirements is a better understanding of the tapered web plate girder's local buckling behavior. This paper conducts a comprehensive numerical analysis to estimate the critical buckling coefficient for simply supported tapered steel web plates, considering loading conditions involving compression and bending stresses. An eigenvalue analysis was carried out to determine the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of tapered web plates with varying geometric parameters. Additionally, the study highlights the relative significance of various parameters affecting the local buckling phenomenon, including the tapering ratio of the panel, normalized plate length, and ratio of minimum to maximum compressive stresses. The regression analysis and optimization techniques were performed using MATLAB software for the results of the finite element models to propose a separate formula for each load case and a unified formula covering different compression and bending cases of the elastic local buckling coefficient. The results indicate that the proposed formulas are applicable for estimating the critical buckling coefficient for simply supported tapered steel web plates.

The hazard warning levels are necessary for the rational design and safety construction of underground space, as mountain and urban tunnel. Sakurai provided the hazard warning levels for assessing the stability of tunnels using the critical strain of rock mass, which is defined as a ratio between uni-axial compressive strength and the Young's modulus. The concept of critical strain guidelines is introduced in this study for the assessment of tunnel safety during excavation. Moreover, in this paper, the critical strain properties of sedimentary rock in Korea has investigated and analysed in detail by Lab. test, as the uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. Finally, critical strain properties of sedimentary rock on uniaxial and triaxial stress condition is discussed the relationship of failure strain values, uniaxial and triaxial compression strengths, confining pressure and Young's modulus.
Instability of bolted rock mass has been a major hazard in the underground coal mining industry for decades. Developing effective support guidelines requires understanding of complex bolted rock mass failure mechanisms. In this study, the dynamic failure behavior, mechanical behavior, and energy evolution of a laboratory-scale bolted specimens is studied by conducting laboratory static-dynamic coupled loading tests. The results showed that: (1) Under static-dynamic coupled loading, the stress-strain curve of the bolted rock mass has a significant impact velocity (strain rate) correlation, and the stress-strain curve shows rebound characteristics after the peak; (2) There is a critical strain rate in a rock mass under static-dynamic coupled loading, and it decreases exponentially with increasing pre-static load level. Bolting can significantly improve the critical strain rate of a rock mass; (3) Compared with a no-bolt rock mass, the dissipation energy ratio of the bolted rock mass decreases exponentially with increasing pre-static load level, the ultimate dynamic impact energy and dissipation energy of the bolted rock mass increase significantly, and the increasing index of the ratio of dissipation energy increases linearly with the pre-static load; (4) Based on laboratory testing and on-site microseismic and stress monitoring, a design method is proposed for a roadway bolt support against dynamic load disturbance, which provides guidance for the design of deep underground roadway anchorage supports. The research results provide new ideas for explaining the failure behavior of anchorage supports and adopting reasonable design and construction practices.

The demand for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and LNG-fueled ships has significantly increased in recent years due to the sulfur-oxide emission regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The main goal of this paper is to introduce the process for the Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) of IMO independent type-B cargo tanks made from 9% nickel alloy. A methodology proposed by the British Standard was used to conduct ECA for any structure with initial flaws. Based on this standard, a Matlab code was developed to perform ECA. Coarse mesh Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed on an independent type-B LNG cargo tank with a capacity of 15,000 m3. The location with the highest development of maximum principal stress was identified at the bottom of the cargo tank. Fine mesh FEA was performed to obtain the stress range required for ECA. The dynamic cargo tank loads used for FEA were determined using some ship rules presented by Det Norske Veritas. As a result of performing a 20-year long-term crack propagation analysis with a semi-elliptical surface crack, the fracture-to-yield ratio exceeded the Fracture Assessment Line (FAL) and some structural reinforcement was necessary. Performing a 15-day short-term crack propagation analysis, the fracture-to-yield ratio remained within the FAL, and no significant LNG leaks were expected. This paper is believed to provide a guide for performing ECA of LNG cargo tanks in the future by providing the basic theory and application sample necessary to perform ECA.
This study focuses on spalling phenomenon which is the one of the main issues of high strength concrete. The definition, classification and characterization, causes and the reaction mechanism of the spalling were investigated on the basis of previous literatures. The spalling phenomenon occurs when several factors such as sharp temperature increase, high water content, low water/cement ratio and local stress concentration in material combine in the concrete material. On the basis o f the factors, the preventing methods from the spalling are known as decrease of temperature increase, preventing of concrete fragmentation and fast drying of internal moisture. In this study, the controlling method of water content below some critical value was proposed as the most effective spalling-preventing method among the spalling-preventing methods. The spalling phenomenon can be prevented by adjusting the water content in the high strength concrete. Therefore, an enforced drying method is needed to decrease the water content below a critical value. Additional experimental data should be generated to determine the critical value of water content for preventing the spalling.
This paper is the results of experimental and numerical works on the investigating design factors influencing the bearing capacity, the ratio of stress concentration, and the failure mechanism of the clay ground improved with sand compaction piles (SCP). In order to find the behavior of the clay ground improved with SCP, extensive centrifuge model experiments were carried out for each of the SCP replacement ratio of 20, 40, and $70\%$, the non-plastic fine contents in sand of 5, 10, and $15\%$, and the ratio of the improved width to the loaded area (W/B) of 1, 2, and 3. The commertially available software of FEM, CRISP, was used to analyze test results by performing numerical estimations. In these numerical analyses the sand compaction piles and the clay ground were simulated as a linear elastic and plastic constitutive model and the modified Cam-clay model, based on Critical State Soil Mechanics, respectively.
The span record of cable-stayed bridges has exceeded 1,000 m, which makes research on the maximum possible span length of cable-stayed bridges an important topic in the engineering community. In this paper, span limit is discussed from two perspectives: the theoretical span limit determined by the strength-to-density ratio of the cable and girder, and the engineering span limit, which depends not only on the strength-to-density ratio of materials but also on the actual loading conditions. Closed form equations of both theoretical and engineering span limits of cable-stayed bridges determined by the cable and girder are derived and a detailed parametric analysis is conducted to assess the engineering span limit under current technical conditions. The results show that the engineering span limit of cable-stayed bridges is about 2,200 m based on materials used available today. The girder is the critical member restricting further increase in the span length; its compressive stress is the limiting factor. Approaches to increasing the engineering span limit are also presented based on the analysis results.

For practical applications, the evaluation of reliability or endurance of HTS conductors is necessary. The mechanical properties and the critical current, $I_c$, of multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes, externally reinforced with stainless steel foils, subjected to high cycle fatigue loading in the longitudinal direction were investigated at 77K. The S-N curves were obtained and its transport property was evaluated with the increase of repeated cycles at different stress amplitudes. The effect of the stress ratio, R, on the $I_c$ degradation behavior under fatigue loading was also examined considering the practical application situation of HTS tapes. Microstructure observation was conducted in order to understand the L degradation mechanism in fatigued Bi-2223 tapes.

According to researchers, the influential factors of scouring are generally divided into three factors: the flow conditions, the type and position of structures, and the characteristics of bed materials. In addition, scouring is affected by the 3-dimensional turbulent boundaries, the unsteady flow, the movement of sediment in the scour-hole area, the approach flow velocity and depth, the width of bridge foundation/pier, and the particle size of bed materials. However, it is difficult to estimate the scour depth near bridge piers when all conditions are factored in at once. Therefore, for reasonably accurate estimates of scour depth, it is essential to consider sufficiently the flow force and resisting force for scour. That is, to determine the shear stress concerning the bed material distribution is needed. In this study, the experiments were performed under the condition of a steady state of flow. As a result, scouring occurred at velocity ratios of 0.476,$(V/V_c=0.476)$, and the scour depth was increased linearly as the velocity ratio increased. in addition, the average values of shear stress ratio at zero scouring depth in both rectangular and circular piers were approximately 7$(\tau_c/\tau_{approach})$ and in the case for same size bed particle material. The results of this study can be used for the fundamental material for estimating the scour depth of bed materials.

In order to use effectively a machinery part with fillet, it is necessary to determine a proper fillet shape in design step, Study of such problem by fracture mechanical criterion is rare. So, this paper focuses on the design of fillet radius in fracture mechanical aspect. Finite element method was used to obtain crack tip stress intensity factor. Stress intensity factor was calculated by COD(crack opening displacement0method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The parameter used in this study are thickness ration, filet radium and crack length . If fillet radius increase , crack propagation may be accelerated. Critical crack length is inversely proportional to fillet radius.
