We fabricated BSCCO-2212(2212) bulk superconductors by using a casting process and evaluated the superconducting properties. The effects of annealing conditions on microstructure and critical properties were studied. It was found that the homogeneous and uniform microstructure improved the critical properties and the microstructures of ingot and annealed rods were different with the size of 2212 rod and tube. The critical current($I_c$) of rods increased with increasing annealing time, probably due to increased grain size of 2212. Annealing time of the highest $I_c$ for the smaller rod(diameter of 10 mm) was shorter(150 hr) than that of the larger rod(diameter of 16 mm, 400 hr). This size effect seems to be related to different grain sizes of the intermediate phases such as 2201 and secondary phases in the ingot. In addition, we fabricated 2212 tubes from the rod by removing the center region which contained inhomogeneous microstructures. The $I_c$ of 2212 tube with the outer diameter of 16 mm and the thickness of 2 mm was measured to 844 A, which corresponds to the critical current density of $1017\;A/cm^2$ at 77 K.
In this study, limestone powder (LS) and fly ash (FA) were used as powder materials in self-compacting concrete (SCC) in increasing quantities in addition to cement, so that the two powders commonly used in the production of SCC could be compared in the same study. Considering the reduction of the maximum aggregate size in SCC, 10 mm or 16 mm was selected as the coarse aggregate size. The properties of fresh concrete were determined by slump flow (including T500 time), V-funnel and J-ring experiments. The experimental results showed that as the amount of both LS and FA increased, the slump flow also increased. The increase in powder material had a negative effect on V-funnel flow times, causing it to increase; however, the increase in FA concretes was smaller compared to LS ones. The increase in the powder content reduced the amount of blockage in the J-ring test for both aggregate sizes. As the hardened concrete properties, the compressive and splitting strengths as well as the modulus of elasticity were determined. Longitudinal and transverse deformations were measured by attaching a special frame to the cylindrical specimens and the values of Poisson's ratio, initiation and critical stresses were obtained. Despite having a similar W/C ratio, all SCC exhibited higher compressive strength than NVC. Compressive strength increased with increasing powder content for both LS and FA; however, the increase of the FA was higher than the LS due to the pozzolanic effect. SCC with a coarse aggregate size of 16 mm showed higher strength than 10 mm for both powders. Similarly, the modulus of elasticity increased with the amount of powder material. Inelastic properties, which are rarely found in the literature for SCC, were determined by measuring the initial and critical stresses. Crack formation in SCC begins under lower stresses (corresponding to lower initial stresses) than in normal concretes, while critical stresses indicate a more brittle behavior by taking higher values.
The drive pulley, which is employed for loading and unloading raw materials in a steel mill, is usually manufactured by use of various welding processes. In this study the weldment in the pulley, in which TIG and $CO_2$ welding processes are used, has been analyzed from view point of fracture mechanics. Fracture toughness tests have been performed according to ASTM E813. A servo-hydraulic testing machine (10kN) has been employed. Also the crack propagation tests (Mode I) have been performed with compact tension specimen in compliance with ASTM E647. To predict the critical crack size in the weldment, finite element stress analysis for the drive pulley under real operating conditions have been performed. In addition, the residual stresses at the weldment and in heat-affected zone have been obtained by hole drilling method. The planar critical crack size have been predicted for the drive pulley by considering the stress analysis results and the residual stresses due to welding process. For the drive pulley considered in this study, it has been concluded that the most important factor in determining the critical crack size is the welding residual stress in the transverse direction. Also the effect of stress concentration at the root of the weldment have been noticeable. For the planar crack, the fatigue crack growth life from an initial crack size of 2mm to the critical crack size obtained as in the above have been predicted. The predicted lives were between 55, 900 and 72, 000 cycles depending on the shape of the elliptical crack. The predicted lives were in fairly good agreement for the drive pulley considered in this study.

The pool-boiling critical heat flux (CHF) of water on small flat plates has been experimentally investigated focusing on the effects of the inclination angle and size of the heated surface under near atmospheric pressure. The second-phase experiment was accomplished to find out the general CHF behavior for over-all inclination angles from -90$^{\circ}$ to 90$^{\circ}$using two plate-type test sections (30$\times$150 mm and 40$\times$150 mm) submerged in a slightly subcooled water pool. Test results generally confirm the first-phase findings and show little effect of inclination angle for inclined upward-facing cases. CHF position moves to lower position with the increase of the heater characteristic size and inclination angle(from -30$^{\circ}$to 60$^{\circ}$).
This study demonstrates the effect of addition of Fe particles of different sizes on the critical properties of the superconductor $MgB_2$. Bulk $MgB_2$ is synthesized by ball milling Mg and B powders with Fe particles at $900^{\circ}C$. When Fe particles with size less than $10{\mu}m$ are added in $MgB_2$, they easily react with B and form the FeB phase, resulting in a reduction in the amount of the $MgB_2$ phase and deterioration of the crystallinity. Accordingly, both the critical temperature and the critical current density are significantly reduced. On the other hand, when larger Fe particles are added, the $Fe_2B$ phase forms instead of FeB due to the lower reactivity of Fe toward B. Accordingly, negligible loss of B occurs, and the critical properties are found to be similar to those of the intact $MgB_2$.
The effect of twisting on the microstructural evolution and critical current of BSCCO superconductor tape has been evaluated. Twisting pitches of the tapes are in the range of 8-70 mm and uniformly deformed. The critical current of twisted tape was dependent on the twist pitch. Specifically, it was observed that the critical current decreased with decreasing twist pitch, and only 50% of critical current was retained when the tape was twisted to a pitch of 8 mm. This reduction of the critical current may be related to the interface irregularity, smaller grain size, worse texture and the presence of cracks due to the induced strain during the twisting processing.
The present study evaluates the interface shear strength between sand and different construction materials, namely steel and concrete, using direct shear test apparatus. The influence of surface roughness, mean size of sand particles, relative density of sand and size of the direct shear box on the interface shear behavior of sand with steel and concrete has been investigated. Test results show that the surface roughness of the construction materials significantly influences the interface shear strength. The peak and residual interface friction angles increase rapidly up to a particular value of surface roughness (critical surface roughness), beyond which the effect becomes negligible. At critical surface roughness, the peak and residual friction angles of the interfaces are 85-92% of the peak and residual internal friction angles of the sand. The particle size of sand (for morphologically identical sands) significantly influences the value of critical surface roughness. For the different roughness considered in the present study, both the peak and residual interaction coefficients lie in the range of 0.3-1. Moreover, the peak and residual interaction coefficients for all the interfaces considered are nearly identical, irrespective of the size of the direct shear box. The constitutive modeling of different interfaces followed the experimental investigation and it successfully predicted the pre-peak, peak and post peak interface shear response with reasonable accuracy. Moreover, the predicted stress-displacement relationship of different interfaces is in good agreement with the experimental results. The findings of the present study may also be applicable to other non-yielding interfaces having a similar range of roughness and sand properties.

Increasing the critical current density of superconducting wire is one of the difficult challenges in the field of superconductivity. It is well known that the higher volume fraction of uniformly dispersed α-Ti is able to enhance the critical current density of superconducting material NbTi because α-Ti serves as a flux pinning center. The volume fraction of α-Ti highly depends on the grain size of NbTi because α-Ti precipitates at the grain boundaries or triple points. For this purpose, we investigated the effect of initial microstructures of NbTi obtained from hot rolling in various temperature conditions on the critical current density. In addition, subsequent heat treatment was assigned to precipitate α-Ti and groove rolling/cold drawing was adopted to produce a wire with a diameter of about 1.0 mm. It was observed that the band structure was formed after hot rolling at 500~600℃. It was also found that the volume fraction of α-Ti after hot rolling at 500~600℃ was higher and it led to the highest critical current density.
The General roles of a spacer grid(SG) are providing a lateral and vertical support for fuel rods, promoting a mixing of coolant and keeping guide tubes straight so as not to impede a control rod insertion under any normal or accidental conditions. To evaluate the impact characteristics of a SG such as impact velocity, critical buckling strength and duration time, a few types of impact tests for SGs have been conducted. In a previous study, a new welding method, a through-welding method, was proposed to increase critical buckling strength of a SG without any design change or material change and was verified by impact tests with $7{\times}7$ partial SG specimens. In this paper, the effect of through-welding method in case of a $16{\times}16$ full-size SG is investigated by pendulum impact tests with $16{\times}16$ SG specimens. And the increase of critical buckling strength for full-size SGs is measured by comparison with impact results of spot-welded and through-welded SGs.

We fabricated Bi-2223 multi-filaments superconductor tape and evaluated the effect of twisting on the microstructural evolution and critical current. Twist pitches of the tapes are in the range of 70- 8mm and uniformly deformed. It was observed that grain size and the degree of texture decreased as decreasing pitch probably due to the formation of the irregular interface between Ag and filaments. In addition critical current of the tapes decreased to 6.5 A with decreasing pitch to 8mm, showing 48% of degradation compared to the untwisted tapes decreased to 6.5 A with decreasing pitch to 8mm, showing 48% of degradation compared to the untwisted tape(12.5 A). These reduction of critical current may be related to the interface irregularity smaller grain size worse texture and the presence of cracks due to the induced strain during twisting processing.
