The distribution of gravel-bed materials in mountainous river is formed by the process of deposition and transportation of sediment responding to stream power of the latest flood that is over the certain scale. The particle size of bed material was surveyed in the longitudinal points of river and detail points of a specific meandering section and used to estimate the critical velocity and stream power. Yang's critical unit stream power and Bagnold's critical stream power for gravel-bed materials increased with the distance from downstream to upstream. Dimensionless shear stress based on the designed flood discharge in Shields diagram was evaluated that the gravel-bed materials in most survey points may be transported as form of bedload. The mean diameter in the meandering section was the biggest size in first water impingement point of inflow water from upstream and the second big size in second water impingement point by reflection flow. The mean diameters were relatively the small sizes in points right after water impingement. The range of mean critical velocity was 0.77~2.60 m/s and critical unit stream power was big greatly in first water impingement point. The distribution of critical stream power, range of 7~171 $W/m^2$, was shown that variation in longitudinal section was more obvious than that of cross section and estimated that critical stream power may be affected greatly in first and second water impingement point.
Psychological distance refers to the perceived gap between a stimulus and a person's direct experience and its activation influences the decisions and actions that the person makes towards the stimulus. We investigated whether the level of familiarity affects the construction of psychological distance. Specifically, we hypothesized that a familiar stimulus, relative to an unfamiliar stimulus, is perceived to be psychologically closer to the observer and so its perception might be modulated by the perceived spatial distance. The familiarity of stimuli was manipulated in terms of preexposure frequency and preexposure perceptual fluency. In experiments, participants were first exposed with three nonsense words in a lexical decision task. The nonsense words were presented in nonword trials with different levels of frequency (frequent vs. rare, Experiment 1) or with different levels of visibility (less blurred vs. more blurred, Experiment 2). Participants then performed a distance Stroop task with the most familiar and the least familiar nonwords. Each of them appeared in either proximal or distant spatial locations in scenes with clear depth cues. The results showed a significant interaction between the word familiarity and the spatial distance: the familiar word was judged faster in proximal locations but slower in distant locations relative to the unfamiliar word. The current findings suggest that metacognitive evaluation of familiarity could be one of the critical factors that underlie the construction of psychological distance.
Purpose: The integrity of interproximal hard/soft tissue has been widely accepted as the key determinant for success or degree of root coverage following the connective tissue graft. However, we reason that the gingival biotype of an individual, defined as the distance from the interproximal papilla to gingiva margin, may be the key determinant that influence the extent of root coverage regardless of traditional classification of gingival recession. Hence, the present study was performed with an aim to verify that individual gingival scalloping pattern inherent from biotype influence the level of gingival margin following the connective tissue graft for root coverage. Methods: Test group consisted of 43 single-rooted teeth from 21 patients (5 male and 16 female patients, mean age: 36.6 years) with varying degrees of gingival recession requiring connective tissue graft; 20 teeth of Miller class I and 23 teeth of Miller class III gingival recession, respectively. The control group consisted of contralateral teeth which did not demonstrate apparent gingival recession, and thus not requiring root coverage. For a biotype determination, an imaginary line connecting two adjacent papillae of a test tooth was drawn. The distance from this line to gingival margin at mid-buccal point and this distance (P-M distance) was designated as "gingival biotype" for a given individual. The distance was measured at baseline and 3 to 6 months examinations postoperatively both in test and control groups. The differences in the distance between Miller class I and III were subject to statistical analysis by using Student.s t-test while those between the test and control groups within a given patient were by using paired t-test. Results: The P-M distance at 3 to 6 months postoperatively was not significantly different between Miller class I and Miller class III. It was not significantly different between the test and control group in a given patient, either, both in Miller class I and III. Conclusions: The amount of root coverage following the connective tissue graft was not dependent on Miller's classification, but rather was dependent on P-M distance, strongly implying that the gingival biotype of a given patient may play a critical impact on the level of gingival margin following connective tissue graft.
Both the propagation velocity and the direction of atmospheric waves are important factors for analyzing and forecasting meteo-tsunami. In this study, a total of 14 events of meteo-tsunami over 11 years (2006-2016) are selected through analyzing sea-level data observed from tidal stations along the west coast of the Korean peninsula. The propagation velocity and direction are calculated by tracing the atmospheric disturbance of each meteo-tsunami event predicted by the WRF model. Then, the Froude number is calculated using the propagation velocity of atmospheric waves and oceanic long waves from bathymetry data. To derive the critical condition for the occurrence of meteo-tsunami, supervised learning using a logistic regression algorithm is conducted. It is concluded that the threshold distance of meteo-tsunami occurrence, from a propagation direction, can be calculated by the amplitude of air-pressure tendency and the resonance factor, which are found using the Froude number. According to the critical condition, the distance increases logarithmically with the ratio of the amplitude of air-pressure tendency and the square of the resonance factor, and meteo-tsunami do not occur when the ratio is less than 5.11 hPa/10 min.
The incandescent lamp is an electric light fixture with a tungsten filament heated to a high temperature, by passing an electric current through it, until it glows with visible light. The hot filament is protected from oxidation with a glass bulb that is filled with inert gas. The incandescent lamp has fire risk when combustible materials are close to its glass bulb. Because its lamp has the property which converts 90~95 percents of the electric power to heat energy. 2015 national fire statistics show that fires caused by lighting fixtures were 652 cases, and incandescent lamps(44 cases) and halogen lamps(53 cases) accounted for 15 percents in those of high heating light fixtures. Since incandescent lamp fires account for about 45 percents in the high heating light fixture, we could not overlook the fire risks by the incandescent lamp. Although many studies related with those have been conducted, incandescent lamp fires are continuously occurred. This study was carried out to study the fire risk of ignition of wood due to radiant heat of incandescent lamp. Radiant heat flux of the incandescent lamp was predicted by applying point source model, and critical distance for ignition of wood was calculated by applying integral model. The results from this study could applied to fire prevention activities related to light bulb, and it could be used in fire cause investigations related to radiant heat of incandescent lamp.

This study was undertaken to investigate the corrosive wear charateristics upon various transformation condition of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron in corrosive environments against mating specimen made of the hardened SM45C. The corrosive wear test was carried out by rubbing the annular surface of two test pieces in distilled water and aqueous solution at constant sliding speed of 0.5m/s. In severe wear region, the corrosive wear rate Wc increased hastily with NaCl concentration owing to intermetallic adhesion but Wc went down slowly in mild wear region due to lubricating effect of the corrosion product. The critical sliding distance decreased with increasing NaCl concentration due to increased generation rate of the corrosion product and the specific corrosive wear rate has maximum in 1% NaCl aqueous solution at mild wear region. With the variation of matrix, the corrosive wear resistance of the fine acicular bainite was higher than that of coarse upper bainite because of reducing the local cell reaction by carbides. A growth in volume fraction of retained austenite in matrix increased the Wc due to soften surface, but has a declining tendency of Wc in mild wear region.

This paper is to investigate the retrofitting effect for a non-seismic reinforced concrete frame strengthened by perimeter steel moment frames with indirect integrity, which ameliorates the problems of the direct integrity method. To achieve this, first, full-scale tests were conducted to address the structural behavior of a two-story non-seismic reinforced concrete frame and a strengthened frame. The non-seismic frame showed a maximum strength of 185 kN because the flexural-shear failure at the bottom end of columns on the first floor was governed, and shear cracks were concentrated at the beam-column joints on the second floor. The strengthened frame possessed a maximum strength of 338 kN, which is more than 1.8 times that of the non-seismic specimen. A considerable decrease in the quantity of cracks for the strengthened frame was observed compared with the non-seismic frame, while there was the obvious appearance of the failure pattern due to the shear crack. The lateral-resisting capacity for the non-seismic bare frame and the strengthened frame may be determined per the specified shear strength of the reinforced columns in accordance with the distance to a critical section. The effective depth of the column may be referred to as the longitudinal length from the border between the column and the foundation. The lateral-resisting capacity for the non-seismic bare frame and the strengthened frame may be reasonably determined per the specified shear strength of the reinforced columns in accordance with the distance to a critical section. The effective depth of the column may be referred to as the longitudinal length from the border between the column and the foundation. The proposed method had an error of about 2.2% for the non-seismic details and about 4.4% for the strengthened frame based on the closed results versus the experimental results.
Energy transfer in $Tb^{3+}$-doped borosilicate glasses has been studied by the analysis of fluorescence intensities and lifetimes of $^5D_3$ and $^5D_4$ states as a function of Tb3+ concentration. It is shown that as the $Tb^{3+}$ concentration is increased the cross-relaxation produces high population of the $^5D_4$ state at the expense of $^5D_3$. It is also found that this interaction is predominantly dipole-dipole transition with critical distance of 13 A. The critical distance for energy transfer $^5D_4$$^5D_4$ which is responsible for the quenching of 5D4 emission at high concentratron of Tb3+ ions is 4.5 A.
In recent decades, the protection and vulnerability of civil structures under explosion loads became a critical issue in terms of security, which may cause loss of lives and structural damage. Concrete retaining walls also restrict soils and slopes from displacements; meanwhile, intensive temporary loading may cause massive damage. In the current study, the modified Johnson-Holmquist (also known as J-H2) material model is implemented for concrete materials to model damages into the ABAQUS through user-subroutines to predict the blasting-induced concrete damages and volume strains. For this purpose, a 3D finite-element model of the concrete retaining wall was conducted in coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation. Subsequently, a blast load equal to 500 kg of TNT was considered in three different positions due to UFC 3-340-02. Influences of the critical parameters in smooth blastings, such as distance from a free face, position, and effective blasting time, on concrete damage rate and destroy patterns, are explored. According to the simulation results, the concrete penetration pattern at the same distance is significantly influenced by the density of the progress environment. The result reveals that the progress of waves and the intensity of damages in free-air blasting is entirely different from those that progress in a dense surrounding atmosphere such as soil. Half-damaged elements in air blasts are more than those of embedded explosions, but dense environments such as soil impose much more pressure in a limited zone and cause more destruction in retaining walls.
In MT and GDS survey for probing the deep structure of the Earth, surrounding seas play a critical role to distort the response of in-land geological structure. This study analyzed the sea effect in the Korean Peninsula and investigated the spatial and frequency dependency of it using 2-D MT modeling. Due to conductance difference between the Yellow Sea and the East Sea, the effect of each sea shows the dependence on frequency and spatial distance from each coastline. In general, TM mode responses are more severely affected by surrounding sea than TE mode one and the differences between 1-D model and TM mode responses are in inverse proportion to the frequency. Assuming that the lowest limit of acquired frequency is 0.001Hz for the given 1-D structure, the separation distance, where the sea effect can be negligible, is approximately 100km for the East Sea and 40-50km for the Yellow Sea, respectively. But, this separation distance is a function of the 1-D electrical structure of subsurface and the used frequency.
